The history behind lolcats
In the early days, many of the earlier images on this site were found around the internet and forums, such as 4chan, fark, fazed, vwforums, gpforums.
The practice of captioning (specifically, cats) started many years ago on anonymous forums, most prominently called the *chans. Supposedly, the practice of posting and the actual type of these images was termed “Caturday”.
Caturday
- A day when people all around the internet create, submit, send, email and send pictures of lolcat’s around the world.
- Throughout this all the tone of Caturday remains the same: POST SOME ******* CAT PICTURES.
This word has since detached from it’s original context, grown, and evolved into different terms like lolcats, lolrus, loldog and splintered into varying sub-memes and sub-sub-memes which employ different grammatical patterns, different contexts, and sometimes even merges memes. It has since spread through many forums, and online communities such as somethingawful, ebaumsworld.
The meme continues to evolve into many completely tangential and unrelated memes: lolbrarians, lolbees, lolpresidents (my favorite being LOLcode). A new LOL- spinoff is created every week. This is happening throughout the internet by people who are having fun, and being creative, by taking a meme (idea) and applying it in new and creative ways.
On ICHC you may also find non-lolcat pictures — we call this lol* and we tag it treasure.
History of ICHC
The history of ICHC starts with the finding of this picture… and a non-stop laughing fit for approximately 73.5 minutes.
Cheezburger and Tofuburger hatched a plan to share this image on the internets with anyone who cared. The url we chose was of the text of the picture.
After posting this image, it was made known that there were no sites where these images could be found in an organized/tagged fashion. So it was decided to fulfill this need… and so, the blog was born.
A few months after standing the site up — a visitor informed us that this image was created on Something Awful forums. The image was contextually parodied via a cat named Happycat a russian cat food company. We have not been able to contact this person, or the folks of Happycat russian cat food.

Which is inspired by another image of a little girl being denied a pony. WTF? Yes.
Then we found this picture, furthering the documentation of the buger saga.
Then this improperly used Victorian photo was made.

its not hard
You don’t have to change the screen res to get rid of the sideways scroll… just hit control and – at the same time and the screen shrinks, to get it back hit control and =. Works great and is easy to switch back and forth.
U has bear narrow screen. U livzin in old skool. Get a wizdescreen br0/
not really man. by going widescreen you lose about 25 to 30% of the viewable screen. its squished down vertically and stretched horizontally.

I’m pretty sure ICHC allows the free use of all their lolcats across the web. Unless the site is claiming they made the pictures themselves, there’s no harm in it. Remember that all lolcats are usermade and those might even be theirs.

Okay, the reason I clicked on this site was because it was a top WordPress site. I had seen it before on WordPress’s list of most popular, but I was like: yeah, that makes no sense, I’m not visiting. Well, my curiosity finally peaked, so I come over to the site and I’m like: wtf is this place? It has a bunch of weird pics and it makes no sense! I Can Has Cheeseburger? WTF is that! So after looking at the little cheesburgers everywhere I had to go find the about page (here) and thank god I did! OMG that first cat with the I Can Has Cheeseburger? is so f**king hilarious! Why doesn’t ICHC’s voting system correct for the fact that most people have no critical sensibility and give everything a five? There should be a curve; the flood of asinine captions with no concept of form is killing lolcats.

Does no one read TIME MAGAZINE???
In the article, the author tells that the language of the lolcatz is much the same that has developed on the internet through chat rooms. This linguistic decay is a product of the need for humans to a) spend as little effort as possible getting their message across (hence:lol, brb, etc.) and b) express themselves in ever more creative, funny and quirky ways. This last one is accomplished by people purposely repeating the most common typos that occur through the hasty use of a keyborad (eg: teh = the). The article clearly made this last point.
The other reason for the language, the article states, is that it reflects the personalities of cats. We all love cats. They do funny things. They do things like fall off chairs, look around and lick themselves as if they are hoping no one is looking. By using misspelling, vernacular and colloquial phrases, the authors more easily display the many shades of personality and quirkiness that come only from that eight pound ball of fluff we all love.
Now, if anyone else has any more questions, please ask a linguist or go read a book.

No, I can’t say I agree, ‘besmall’ (a fitting name, I’m sure, to go with your personality). You see, the chat room abbreviations preceded the texting abbreviations. And babies can’t has cheezeburgers. It’s just not right. As for shnorglepuss, I hadn’t seen that one in Websters. So I guess if it’s ok for you to use improper english to try to put people down, it’s ok for the authors of the lolcatz to do it in good nature to spread some happiness around.
Love this site! It is the happiest place on the net. Our household is afro-american and we take no offense to the misspellings and mispronunciations in the captions. In fact, we love ‘em! It’s all in fun and really hilarious. Like the kitten saying “gonna eat ur fambly”- that cracked us up. Seems like LOLcats is in touch with all different peoples, cats and animal lovers. Yea!

I am dealing with a cancer scare right now and your website is such a fun boost every day–but please can we leave off religious jokes? I try to not make fun of other religions because they mean so much to others and I wish you would not make fun of Jesus’ death because of how precious He is to me. The cat “dying for your sins” is not very funny, just a jibe at other peoples’ beliefs.

I love ICHC and look at the new ones and the voting page every day at least once.
So, two months ago I uploaded about seven or eight pics of my 3 cats and tried to use the cheeseburger factory to caption them. But none of them showed up until today, just about two months later. And that one is captioned ‘this book is too small for both of us’ and it’s on the second voting page today, but the notes for that pic, which is of my cat Shoshi laying in the middle of nursing textbook, say the source of the pic is unknown.

I am in greement with your friend for most of the time. Crappy spelling is bandied about far too often. BUT – the lolspeak on ICHC is totally in context and that is the dfference. It’s a deliberate attempt to make people laugh (and laffs we does manys timez peeps) whereas some people use it because they don’t know any better!

Born and raised in Brazil,where I still live, I grew up in a cat loving household, speaking both Portuguese and “kat tong” or “lingua de gato”… I was stunned and delighted to find the exact English version of the language we spoke at home at “Icanhas”
This Xmas I’ll go home and translate the captions for Malu, my mom… we’ll LOL together like in the old times.
