WTF is going on?
I Can Has Cheezburger?® is a site that gathers, organizes, tags, and captions the funniest and entertaining pictures of user-generated lolcats and lol* (other animals) from the Internet. All of our lolcats and lol*whatevers are made by you, our users.

The history behind lolcats
In the early days, many of the earlier images on this site were found around the internet and forums, such as 4chan, fark, fazed, vwforums, gpforums.
The practice of captioning (specifically, cats) started many years ago on anonymous forums, most prominently called the *chans. Supposedly, the practice of posting and the actual type of these images was termed “Caturday”.
Caturday
- A day when people all around the internet create, submit, send, email and send pictures of lolcat’s around the world.
- Throughout this all the tone of Caturday remains the same: POST SOME ******* CAT PICTURES.
This word has since detached from it’s original context, grown, and evolved into different terms like lolcats, lolrus, loldog and splintered into varying sub-memes and sub-sub-memes which employ different grammatical patterns, different contexts, and sometimes even merges memes. It has since spread through many forums, and online communities such as somethingawful, ebaumsworld.
The meme continues to evolve into many completely tangential and unrelated memes: lolbrarians, lolbees, lolpresidents (my favorite being LOLcode). A new LOL- spinoff is created every week. This is happening throughout the internet by people who are having fun, and being creative, by taking a meme (idea) and applying it in new and creative ways.
On ICHC you may also find non-lolcat pictures — we call this lol* and we tag it treasure.
History of ICHC
The history of ICHC starts with the finding of this picture… and a non-stop laughing fit for approximately 73.5 minutes.
Cheezburger and Tofuburger hatched a plan to share this image on the internets with anyone who cared. The url we chose was of the text of the picture.
After posting this image, it was made known that there were no sites where these images could be found in an organized/tagged fashion. So it was decided to fulfill this need… and so, the blog was born.
A few months after standing the site up — a visitor informed us that this image was created on Something Awful forums. The image was contextually parodied via a cat named Happycat a russian cat food company. We have not been able to contact this person, or the folks of Happycat russian cat food.

Which is inspired by another image of a little girl being denied a pony. WTF? Yes.
Then we found this picture, furthering the documentation of the buger saga.
Then this improperly used Victorian photo was made.

not really man. by going widescreen you lose about 25 to 30% of the viewable screen. its squished down vertically and stretched horizontally.

I’m pretty sure ICHC allows the free use of all their lolcats across the web. Unless the site is claiming they made the pictures themselves, there’s no harm in it. Remember that all lolcats are usermade and those might even be theirs.

Okay, the reason I clicked on this site was because it was a top WordPress site. I had seen it before on WordPress’s list of most popular, but I was like: yeah, that makes no sense, I’m not visiting. Well, my curiosity finally peaked, so I come over to the site and I’m like: wtf is this place? It has a bunch of weird pics and it makes no sense! I Can Has Cheeseburger? WTF is that! So after looking at the little cheesburgers everywhere I had to go find the about page (here) and thank god I did! OMG that first cat with the I Can Has Cheeseburger? is so f**king hilarious! I did, I laughed out loud! Does that make me a nerd or does that mean that All our base belong to the internets has cheeseburger? (Okay, does anyone get the joke I just made???) Or am I too old school for ya?

I took that “I has cheeseburger” photo of the cat with the cheeseburger on his back awhile back for stuffonmycat.com. It was all before the lolcat craze. Guess it worked out great!
