O, The Places You’ll Go: De Poezenboot (The Cat Boat)

Funny Pictures - The Cat Boat, De Poezenboot

Welcome to De Poezenboot, or The Cat Boat as it is also known. Located in Amsterdam, The Cat Boat is an animal sanctuary that floats on one of the city’s many canals. It began in 1966, when Henriette van Weelde decided to take care of a family of stray cats living under a tree outside her house. Soon, more showed up. Over the last forty years, the shelter has become a popular place for kitteh-loving tourists to visit. Any organization that rescues and helps animals is amazing in our book; the uniqueness of The Cat Boat is simply a cool bonus.

Thanks to Cheez Frend PrettyShoes for the tip. Check out a few more pictures of The Cat Boat Below.

  27. Please let all of our Cheezburger friends know about imom.org. It’s an AMAZING organization that raises funds to pay vets for treatment when pet parents need financial help. They post the pet’s story and the community donates needed funds that are paid to the vet directly. Their wonderful community also provides ongoing moral support for pet owners. Several years ago, my kitteh needed emergency surgery. Imom posted his story on a Friday and by Monday morning had raised the necessary funds. Their wonderful help allowed me to spend more years with my beloved kitteh.

  31. Nancy says:

Poezenboot? That sounds an awful lot like Puss ‘n Boot. Maybe that’s how the story got it’s origin. Puss wore waders (boots) so he wouldn’t get his paws wet. It all makes sense now.

Poezenboot? What a stupid name, but at least it sounds like Puss n Boots. What’s the matter with them in Holland, don’t they speak English?

  35. Purp says:

i been there. felt kinda cheated. the ‘boat’ is actually static, so its actually more of a hut filling a little pier.

The funniest thing is the volunteer staff; lots of little ‘mad old cat ladies’, and men too (dey equal ops, the amsters). i got the impression they had to staff this place to fulfil their complusion due their very tall houses (lemmings would make a better house pet), and they kinda seemed to resent the tourists. either that or being round all them cats rubbed off on them, with the steely glare etc becoming second nature.

Not the barge full of cats and sofas i wistfully thought of but about 20 cats in various states of moggy’dom with some water outside! still worth 30 mins of your time if your in the area tho. (its free, altho you will be ambushed for a donation :-p)

  40. The_Dizzie says:

The Cats House on Kings (aka The Cats House on the Kings) is the largest No-Cage, No-Kill Lifetime Cat Sanctuary and adoption center. (They even have some goggies but its mostly a cat sanctuary)

    Quote from the site: http://www.cathouseonthekings.com/
    Our Mission
The Cat House on the Kings is California’s largest no-cage, no-kill, lifetime cat sanctuary and adoption center. Our mission is to place rescued cats and kittens into loving, permanent homes; to provide a safe, happy and healthy home for unwanted cats and kittens in a unique, no-cage facility; to prevent pet overpopulation through spaying and neutering; and to educate the public about responsible pet ownership.

    In a Nutshell
Lynea Lattanzio, who founded and runs The Cat House on the Kings, talks about how it came about and gives you a peek into our unique environment in this video created by Jack Perez.

The Cat House is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation, receives no government or public funding, and relies entirely on donations from the public to carry out its mission.

Since its founding 19 years ago, The Cat House on the Kings has saved over 18,000 cats and 5,000 dogs (not counting the 40,000 animals we have spayed and neutered!) and currently cares for more than 700 cats and kittens, a dozen or so dogs and a handful of goats, who earn their keep as lawnmowers!

Great place, the founder is a wonderful woman.

  41. catlady5 says:

Check out Bonanza Cat Hospital in Las Vegas. Dr. Linda Steelman and staff have taken in hundreds of cats that have medical problems or are otherwise considered non-adoptable. The cats roam all over the vet clinic (when not sleeping or nomming, of course), get the medicines they need, and get a lot of loving. There is a large staff of volunteers who provide hugs, brushing, laps–and lots more love. On top of all that, Dr Steelman is an awesome vet! Check out poppyfoundation.org to donate to the cause!

  42. Theresa says:

Oooh! Oooh! I know a cool place: my job! I work for First Coast No More Homeless Pets (www.fcnmhp.org). We provie low-cost or free spay/neuter surgeries for low-income pet owners, including a TNR program for feral cats brought in by feral caretakers. We also work with our city’s animal control shelter to TNR feral, stray, and community cats brought to the shelter: in the past, they would have been euthanized, but now we sterilize and vaccinate them and release them back to their colony. When we get cats that AREN’T feral and would make a great pet, we partner with local pet supply stores to find homes for them. And for special cats that may not find a home right away, we have big comfy kennels for them or they roam upstairs in our office area.

We even won the Humane Alliance’s Bolts and Nuts Award for performing the most spay/neuter surgeries in one year: 24,111. w00t!

  43. MinxyKat says:

Tabby’s Place in Ringoes, NJ is one of the greatest havens for cats in hopeless situations. It’s a cageless, no-kill cat sanctuary comprised of open living spaces for both resident and adoptable cats and an outdoor atrium as well. Tabby’s Place is renowned for helping cats with special needs. The staff is kindheartedly and the work they do is nothing short of godly!

    http://www.tabbysplace.org/

    • E says:

I second and third MinxyKat’s comments about Tabby’s Place. They are the last stop for so many kitties.

      From their website:

Since the mission of Tabby’s Place is to serve as a refuge of last resort for cats, we only accept cats that are in hopeless situations. A cat scheduled to be euthanized at a shelter is in an inarguably hopeless situation. For this reason, the majority of cats at Tabby’s Place come from other shelters which, of necessity, must euthanize some cats.

You definitely need to do a feature on the Canadian Parliament Hill Cat Sanctuary!

Adorable little condos for retired strays, and if you go at night, you just might be lucky enough to see some baby racoons stealing the kittys’ noms.

  46. Dessertlady says:

Please do a feature on Lost Dog and Cat Rescue Foundation in Arlington, VA! Their website is lostdogrescue.org. They are wonderful rescue organization with a ranch along with foster families for the goggies and kitties. If you live in the DC area they also run two nomming places – The Lost Dog Pizzaria and The Stray Cat Cafe. The decor and menus are all about dogs and cats. The Stray Cat has portraits of many of the kitties who founded their forever homes :)

They helped us find our wonderful goggie who joined our family of three kitties (rescues from when we lived in other parts of the nation). LDCRF is pretty well known in the DC area and they are wonderful people who help all animals find forever homes!

    Kitty Haven Sanctuary:
    http://www.kittyhavenrescue.org/

One woman does this all on her own – pics don’t do it justice. Adopts out hundreds of cats every year, saves thousands, and they all get love and attention. She has some of the worst horror stories of the most terrible things that have ever been done to kittens–we’re in a really bad area for strays, dumped cats, and non-spaying/neutering–but you can go see the survivors she has nursed back to health and given a wonderful home to. (P.S.: There are racecar beds.)

this place always amazed me as a child: http://hermitagecatshelter.org/
our family had about 18 cats total, including the wild cat and her kittens that we fed that lived on the back porch (as long as no humans came back there). i always wanted more so that place was like heaven lol. another place i’ve found when i was living in philly was http://www.tabbysplace.org/index.html it’s for cats rescued from hopeless situations.
