      Those funny postures are aggressive threat displays to warn a rival cat off. Cats (as much as I love them and wish otherwise) are not sentient and so don’t realize that they are looking at themselves.

        You don’t have to know what a reflection is in order to be sentient. Have you ever had a cat happy to see you? Have you ever seen a cat dreaming? Those are clear indications of sentience.

        They realize it after some time. One of my cat’s babies loved looking at herself in the mirror. And my cat actually looks at herself in the mirror while grooming.

    My highschool art teacher had a cat that would run head-long into his reflection every time he got a chance. She kept the door to the room with the mirror closed to prevent that.One day he managed to get inside when she was at work. By the time she came home he had brain damage. The cat still wanted to kill the mirror image though. She had to get rid of the mirror. She said there were many, many scratch marks on the door and around the knob to show how long and hard he had worked to get into the room with the “rival cat.”
