People! Stop overfeeding your cats! And don’t give them canned cat food all the time! Poor kitties- let them outside if you can to get some exercise.
Yes, because clearly running around outside where they can pick up all sorts of parasites and pathogens, and get injured by dogs and cars, is VASTLY preferable to letting them run around an entire house. Not to mention that those cats aren’t even that fat. Hell, the calico is in excellent shape.
That’s what vaccines are for. And cats do not “run around an entire house”. There’s very little to stimulate them, and so they do very little. When a cat is let outside- even if it’s only for a little while, even if it’s supervised- their first order of business is not to nap. And yeah, what idiot would let their cat out if they live next to a highway or something, or if they know there is a dangerous dog that’s always present? That’s why I said “if you can”.
And I love how fat-America’s view of acceptable weight is so skewed. Think about it- if a cat is supposed to be 8 lbs, but is instead 10, that’s 25% more than what it is supposed to be. You think it doesn’t look so bad, but I’m sure your vet would disagree.
You’re an idiot. Do not speak when you know not what the hell you’re talking about. The cats are not over weight. And vaccine or not, it is NOT advisable to have them outside. RESPONSIBLE owners know this and keep them in.
Um, you’re blind if you don’t think the orange one is fat. And all of those “responsible” owners probably have fat, unhealthy cats that will eventually have diabetes and live a shorter life. Everyone and everything needs exercise. If you think you should never let your animals outside because of the big bad world, then following the same logic, you should also never leave your house and avoid the outside and other humans as much as possible for fear of viruses, toxins, car accidents, violent people, falling chimmney bricks, etc. But you don’t, do you? No, because it’s a quality of life issue.
Random comment, but I think you are getting a little aggressive, especially with the “fat-America’s view” I don’t disagree that alot of people overfeed their cat, but I live in a city with people from ALL nationalities and countries, and actually, the Americans I’m friends with have thinner cats than the malaysians and the Russians, etc. While my mom’s cats are just obese.
It all depends on how you play with your cat and what all you allow them to eat that affects their obesity. This is actually the first place I’ve ever lived where I COULD have an outdoor cat, and I still won’t because aside from an outdoor cat being not so good for the environment, if I move, and I’m sure I eventually will, I may wind up somewhere an outdoor cat will NOT be acceptable, and it’s almost impossible to make an outdoor cat into a 100% indoor cat. My friend has a 16 story balcony, so she can’t let her cat out, and my mom has coyotes and her cats get eaten if they even escape overnight. My boss’s cat was eaten by a fox. My mom has one indoor/outdoor cat who is doing just fine, but she frequently has to be dewormed, and brings home wildlife like quails and and many other birds despite always having a full bowl. Multiply that by all the strays and other cats, and you have a large wildlife impact.
Again, it’s down to taking care of the cat. I know my cat is indoor, so I set aside time to play with her. I have roommates who play with her when I’m at school, and I buy her healthy cat food, and measure out her diet. And even if I planned on never moving, I would still keep her indoors. A neighbor of ours had their cat drag itself back to their home with it’s back broken and tail partially crushed. however that happened, they were lucky the cat got better, but normally they don’t. I think a well taken care of indoor cat that lives for years is far better than an outdoor cat who lives for 2 years max (the average life expectancy of all the outdoor cats I had as a child… which would be about 10)
