its us that is making these animals endangered in the first place with importing and exporting them illegally for, you guessed it, PETS! They get ill or killed along the way because they are not properly looked after.
not just pets Animal Carer…the food you eat (Even if you aren’t a meat eater, farming land has to expand), the house you live in, the paper you use daily…everything we do shrinks their habitat and makes them endangered, there’s no way to actually stop it right now.

This isn’t cute at all. Slow loris are an endangered species that usually have their teeth ripped out of their heads when they are sold as pets.
If anything this is absolutely disgusting.
Most usually die in captivity, due to infecting after having their teeth ripped out of their heads with pliers.
Please remove this video as to not encourage others to want them as pets.
I agree Ian. I’m normally a “let’s have fun” type of person, but I cannot find any mirth in the illegal trade of endangered species.
poor critter looks sleepy, doesn’t seem fair to be doing that to it, it wants to be sleepin not being teased. dunno if I agree that it shouldn’t be a pet (sugar gliders are good pets and they are nocturnal sleepy critters) I do however agree that responsible care includes not interrupting it’s natural sleep cycle to torment it, I’d be grumpy too if someone did that to me while I was sleeping.
No it shouldn’t be a pet. It actually has a poisonous bite and that is why they pull its teeth out so they can sell them. They are endangered and it is illegal to own or sell them. As we know tho if it is ‘cute’ and therefore wanted by people there will be a market for them.
Should the video be pulled? I’m sitting on the fence. Someone will see this, read the comments and learn from it and maybe pass on the knowledge to help protect them. The last lorus video went viral without any comments.
Completely agree with you PancakeMomm. This is the kind of video that various worldwide wildlife rescuers find appalling. That poor animal should be in its natural habitat and not in some awful ‘pet shop’ making money for its owners. Didn’t like what I saw at all.

This site is displaying ever increasing numbers of photos and videos of treatment to animals that is just plain wrong. What saddens me most is that people enjoy it. I don’t think I’ll be visiting anymore.

No. Keeping a Loris awake in such bright conditions is the very definition of torture for it. You try having eyes that cover about 2/3 of your head and being forced to keep them open in bright light.
And saying that forcing an organism to stay awake when it’s exhausted isn’t torture is just shortsighted on your part, as it’s one of the most used methods of torture utilized by the CIA and other agencies.

good grief. again, this video is out of context. it’s one tiny little clip. it’s not a video of the poor little guys teeth being ripped out or it being mistreated in any way. this particular clip is of this little animal being as cute as cute can be. if you want to educate people of the plight of this animal you are going about it the wrong way.
The Slow Loris facing extinction due to demand in the pet trade, and has become one of the most popular primate species on sale in Indonesian, and in other less regulated, pet markets.
Teeth are ripped out by untrained vendors and hunters, and because the loris is so fragile – the jaw bones are often broken in the process, and/or they get horribly painful infections in the gums and jaw . And then they are either sold on to the unsuspecting, where the Loris dies in their new owners possession, unable to eat (but the vendor and hunter have already made their money so they don’t give a damn), or killed as unsellable.
They are usually taken from their freshly killed parents as babies. If my source is correct, they are not good breeders in captivity; hence the kidnapping of them. Poor little creatures. They are undoubtedly gorgeous but they should be admired from afar. They suffer depression under human raising too.
Prairie dogs are another viral-video animal that is kidnapped from its home as babies… sucked out of their hidey-holes with a vacuum-like device. Adopt your pets from shelters!

I agree with Cry. How do we know this Loris isn’t a rescue animal? Maybe it was saved from an abusive owner or one who didn’t want it anymore. I agree that wild animals belong in the wild, but there could be a reason why this Loris is in captivity. True, it should be sleeping during the day, but it really didn’t seem to be in much distress. I think if it was truly upset, it would be trying to bite or get away. That being said – it was a really cute video.
I believe this must be a rescue animal – he has a bandage around his middle and there are veterinary cases in the background. Granted the techs or vets shoul.d not have “exploited” the little guy to video him, but abuse, probably not…

I agree with most of you – get this video off the site, animal cruelty is never entertaining nor should it be acceptable for civilised society. Just wish there was a follow-up video where a rescuer came in and took her away from that hell hole. Very sad indeed.

All baby animals are cute. And I can understand why this site would post them. But… really? When I signed on, it was for cute cat videos. Now, it seems every week someone is showing animals that should never have been made into pets, such as fennec foxes, porcupines and prairie dogs.

Could this be an opportunity to educate people on the fact that this (really adorable) animal should not be a pet? Cheezburger, please make it clear that you do not support trade in exotic animals, no matter how cute they are, and be cautious about when and how you post videos like this. Wild animals being adorable in the wild or in rescue and rehab (when we know they’re in the responsible care of professionals) is one thing, but it’s important to make it clear where we stand on the irresponsible treatment of critters of all kinds.
this makes me has a sad. little Loris is made to live in trees. better to help them survive in the wild by contributing to the charity of your choice that defends and protects wild environments.

I am one of the first people to agree that videos showing endangered and exotic animals as pets and being mishandled should be taken down.
But….on this particular video, I’m actually voting that we should keep this up, if only for the message that others are bringing.
When I first clicked the video and went “aww, how cute!”, I honestly had no idea what a Loris was. So I googled it, and looked up the species. I learned that they’re in varying stages of endangerment, and how they are treated in the illegal exotic pet trade.
While my first instinct was as usual “AWW, HOW CUTE, I WANT ONE TO CUDDLEWUDDLE!” – reading about the species and the comments made me realize the danger this cute creature is in.
I think the video should be left up. If the comments and video are taken down, other people might not see and realize that while it’s certainly a cute animal, it’s not one that’s made to be a pet like in the video.
I feel Blackbyrde said it perfectly. Leave the video up, but Cheezburger could possibly put up a note saying that it does not condone endangered animals as pets.
Agreed. I’ve learned a lot in these comments (had no idea about the teeth pulling!) and it’s certainly made me more aware. I also agree that we don’t have enough information about what’s going on here and that doesn’t help. But on the whole, making it very clear that this is an example of what NOT to do would make a world of difference.

For instance, if I were to see YOU at a public event, surrounded by people who were, say laughing and poking you with a stick, I would perceive that as wrong, or, at least as something that MIGHT deserve further action.
EVEN IF everyone at the scene was laughing and joking and saying “Move along, there’s nothing to see here” or, “It’s none of your business.”
