I was at a petting zoo once, and there was a man there who obviously didn’t know anything about alpacas. One of them was doing exactly this to him, and he was going right up to it, making kissy faces, and saying,”Aww, he just wants to give me a kiss, don’t you darling?” I was waiting for the splat!, but it never came. I guess the alpaca was feeling merciful that day.

That is not an alpaca, that is a llama who appears to have berserker syndrome. Llamas should not behave that way.
It’s my understanding that llamas do sometimes spit when angered or stressed. Those that have been raised by friendly, kind humans don’t do it as often, if ever, but those not so lucky, or in the wild, can and do spit. The same is true of camels. The ones from a nearby bed-n-breakfast animal farm are incredibly friendly, especially the young ones. But another guest who’d spent a lot of time in the Middle East said most animal drivers don’t treat their charges very well and the camels there can be quite mean. Just don’t ever try to make nice with a zebra – most of them can be nasty and they like to bite!
