Don’t know about you but I find it massively unfair that I live in a country to which hedgehogs are not indigenous!

  4. ariane says:

When he’s swimming around he’s trying to get out of the water. When he floats on his back his spines are waterlogged. I hope they woke up and fished him out of there. I do know about hedgehogs and water is in no way their natural habitat.

    • jen0cide says:

that’s not true. hedgies actually really love water, and when they float on their back it’s their version of a backstroke. Check any hedgie website and they’ll talk about that.

  5. Howard says:

The headgehog is in fact dead in the last seconds of this video but the cooing lady has failed to notice. It was probably suicide.

  6. Jennybean says:

The woman talking in the background sounds like Mr Herbert from Family Guy.

Ai see Hedgie scrabbling at the sides to get out and, if that is something he can climb on (I thought it looked like a water-logged sponge), the video cuts at that moment and resumes with the poot b*gger on his back!
I don’t think you at all trolly, and hope I won’t get labelled as one either – let’s go back to the last “real” LOL and have our usual fun!

Good job again America. Now you might not realise it webmaster, but this is animal cruelty. Killing a hedgehog by drowning it, does in my opinion not belong on this site, you should take it down, thank you very much.

    • Meesh says:

It’s not dead – it blinks right at the end of the video.

  9. TheSnark says:

Well, I would be swimming belly-up (and ears covered!) if someone talked like that to me. What a perfectly horrible voice.

  10. Sat says:

    He died at the end

    • Elanor says:

He blinked though, right before the film cut out.
But yeah, hedgie is trying to get OUT of the water, he’s on his back like that because he’s totally exhausted and can no longer swim. Get him out :(

  11. tomjones says:

women + video camera = animal cruelty.

  12. Tobias says:

This is rather animal cruelty than cute.

  13. me says:

    bahahahaha, oops, sorry

  14. hobbles says:

its funny but i feel for the overly spongy Porcupiny

  15. hmph says:

the whining about ‘animal cruelty’ (as I am sure the hedgehog would have been squirming and squealing and generally putting up a big prickly fuss if he was having even the slightest bit of a bad time with it) it is SOOO KYOOT!

    • hmph says:

      sorry, ‘whining notwithstanding’

      • Nic says:

But don’t you know? If you ever do anything but pet an animal with three sets of gloves on through the armholes on its bubble, you’re abusing it! Animals are meant to be held perfectly still in bubble wrap or else its DANGEROUS AND ABUSIVE.

lol I hope none of the people who comment on this website have children. poor kids’d never be let out of their rooms :\

        • percocet princess says:

I have to agree with this. I’ve seen so many people whine about animal cruelty on this site that it’s ridiculous! If anyone does so much as PET an animal in the WRONG WAY everyone gets their PANTIES in a knot.

I have to agree with you–please don’t reproduce!

This animal obviously did not die (he blinks, people), and he would have been flailing and squealing if he was upset. Have you ever MET an upset animal?! They aren’t this calm, people, they aren’t! I mean, seriously, try to BATHE YOUR CAT. That’s an upset animal (and bathing your cat isn’t even animal abuse, kids!)

It doesn’t even look like he was IN THERE for that long. He wasn’t upset, and a few minutes of swimming is nothing but good exercise. The little dude is fine.

Please, please, DON’T have children, alright? And if you think ANYTHING is animal abuse, STOP visiting animal sites, will you? Spend your time on PETA’s site, or something.

          • Kazinga says:

Oh thank God I’m not the only one. I, too, am sick of people on this site calling every other thing animal abuse. It’s more than annoying – it distracts from things that constitute actual animal abuse.
It’s like you said – I don’t think these people know what a real ‘distressed’ animal looks like. And no, ‘upset’ isn’t even the same as ‘distressed’ – which is usually very severe mental anguish that affects them physically – not just a temporary annoyance or discomfort.

    • Jonny Panic says:

It’d be yelling if it could get it’s mouth out of the water. I feel sorry for the poor thing, and unless they show a video with the bath mostly empty (dry on one side and a pool of water on the other) and show it willingly deciding to go for a swim, I’d say this is cruel.

      • Jonny Panic says:

Okay, I watched the full video (look for “Schming Swimming on youtube), and he floats around calm on his back for about four and a half minutes before righting himself and swimming around a few moore seconds, then they take him out and he sniffs around. I still can’t tell if he enjoyed it and it doesn’t really seem right though, I’m unconfortable with it.

        • percocet princess says:

So even though the hedgehog isn’t hurt and doesn’t look distressed, you are still uncomfortable? Even though you probably don’t know a thing about hedgehogs, you are still BOTHERED by the video because it ‘just doesn’t seem right’? Think about what you are saying, man!

What is wrong with people today… :/

          • marusa says:

i completely agree…there clearly is something wrong with people today. everyone seems to care a bit too much about a hedgehog swimming around, but what about human beings being treated unfairly?? when we walk past homeless people do we help them? how many people are beaten to death everyday, how many kids are bullied everyday?? how many times do we see an ad on tv about poor african children and don’t even react? i don’t agree with animal cruelty, but i also believe that we are the most neglectful, ignorant and disturbed species on the planet.

            • Mei says:

Very true. The fact that there’s clearly nothing wrong with the hedgehog goes to further trivialise these complaints. What’s up with complaining about a swimming hedgehog when there really ARE animals out there who are being abused?

There was a story here in Norway a while back, where a bunch of teenage boys caught cats, tied them to poles, tied firecrackers to them and blew them up. THAT’s animal abuse. That’s a cringeworthy story of true cruelty. Leave the happy, swimming hedgehog alone!

  16. michael says:

Lately I don’t even want to click on the videos from this site. just about every other one is a video of an animal in discomfort/distress while someone just watches and laughs. what is wrong with the people who pick your videos? It’s a big internet, can’t you find some vids of animals just being cute or funny without the cruelty?

Please, stick to lolanimal photos. those are funny, probably because they’re made by site visitors and not the staff, whose taste in humor seems to be extremely questionable…

    • anon says:

You make me sad for humanity :C

    • Sylmenya says:

I have seen unhappy hedgehog behavior, and this isn’t it. And before you ask, I was not abusing my hedgie. I did sometimes have to do things she didn’t like, such as trimming her toenails or pulling clumps of dirt out of her spines. The hedgie in the video looked like it was enjoying a swim. Mine certainly did; she was very curious, and liked to explore new environments, including water. She was quite relaxed after a swim, and wouldn’t get at all defensive when I held her afterwards in a towel to make sure she dried properly before returning her to her cage. I also scrubbed her gently with a toothbrush while she was swimming, and she would actually lean into it. She wouldn’t have done that if she was distressed about being in water. Also, hedgehogs in distress definitely squeal. Mine did when I tried to trim her toenails.

I find this video extremely cute, and it brings back happy memories of my cutie, who was the same color as this adorable boy. If the videos bother you, feel free to not watch them. I have not yet seen any videos that depict animal cruelty.

      • eire says:

My hedgie loved a nice dip in the kitchen sink. She would scurry right to the edge waiting for me to put her in. My Lily girl loved to swim. It was her favorite thing next to chasing my dog in her huge ball.

Much like yours, mine would squeal if I had to trim her nails or do anything she didn’t like.

This hedgie is not in distress or being abused. Hedgies can and will swim for short periods. Lily did it all the time. After, I’d dry her off and let her curl up with me. Trust me, when you own a hedgie, you know when they are ticked off. You can’t miss a ticked off hedgehog if you try.

    • Patrick says:

Maybe you SHOULD watch the videos, so you actually know what you’re talking about.

  17. hedgehog friend says:

    HEDGEHOGS ARE NO PETS!
Most important thing about living creatures: to be oh so “kyoooot”…never mind if the “toy” actually feels well…the worst thing might be to leave the little kyooty thingy in its natural environment – what a shame nobody could admire their kyoootness there. Why not make a law that kyooot thing ought ti be in human possesions….

    • Prior Semblance says:

What decides whether or not something is a pet?

      • boB says:

Silly Prior Semblance. Obviously, hedgehog friend has the final say in whether or not something is a pet. Otherwise, they wouldn’t have felt empowered to make the comment that they made.

    • KeeperOfTheReaper says:

You do realize that we wouldn’t have pets such as dogs and cats, right?

    • Mei says:

I do agree that it’s fundamentally wrong to take wild animals out of their natural habitats; that’s how animals become endangered. Animals in captivity often don’t reproduce as much as they should (usually because we won’t let them), and this contributes to damage the ecosystem. Cats and dogs can’t be helped. There are some animals who have been domesticated for so long that attempting to release them all would be equally damaging.

But I won’t judge; just cause I wouldn’t do it doesn’t mean others can’t. I do know that it’s illegal where I live. Hell, I don’t think you can legally keep frog spawn here for other than educational purposes… Then again, you can’t legally keep any kind of reptile here, either, so our rules are a little stupid.

      • Megi says:

Your comment makes no sense. No animal is endangered because of people owning pets. Animals are endangered because of destruction of habitat and poaching. And what on earth do you mean by “cats and dogs can’t be helped?” You realize there are wild cats and dogs, yes? And that in areas where they are not captured and spayed or neutered they quickly overpopulate the area?
Every culture has different designations for animals. In the US, dogs are only seen as pets, but in some Asian cultures it is a regular part of cuisine. Americans would never think about eating a horse, but in France this is common practice. In reverse, most cultures eat cows, but in other countries they are considered holy animals. How one views a certain type of animal is arbitrary at best and it really makes no sense to force your areas view on anyone else, regardless of who is from where. Hedgehogs are cute and seem to enjoy companionship thus, to most of us = pet. Calm yourself and learn about ecology a bit more.

        • Mei says:

Um… Read the post before you reply to it? “But I won’t judge; just cause I wouldn’t do it doesn’t mean others can’t.” I’m not forcing my view on anyone, thank you very much. I was making a post in a discussion. You are free to keep as many hedgehogs as you want. As for “cats and dogs can’t be helped”, I mean that they’ve been kept as pets for so long that it would be pointless to try to “free” them all. I have had cats all my life, actually. I just happen to believe that most animals should be left in their natural habitat. I’m especially appalled at the idea of private persons keeping large cats like tigers and lions in pens in their back yard, something I know is legal in the US.

There are some animals that we have kept domesticated for a long time. I think that we do enough to harm the planet already and should refrain from taking any more. JMO, and you needn’t get so defensive. I have every right to an opinion, don’t I?

        • Mei says:

Your point about wild cats and dogs was exactly the point I was making in this comment, actually: “There are some animals who have been domesticated for so long that attempting to release them all would be equally damaging.” The wild cats and dogs of which you speak are most commonly either ex-pets or descendants of animals who have been kept as pets. There are very few naturally wild (as in not first bred by humans) types of dog other than various species of wolf, just like there aren’t really any naturally wild cats of the sort we keep as pets, though there are some naturally wild felines of roughly the same size and appearance as some breeds of cats in some countries.

  18. Kenny G says:

Poor taste indeed. No LOLs here.

  19. Chris says:

Should learn not to feed the trolls, but . . . it is really pretty irresponsible to level charges of “animal cruelty” based on incomplete knowledge and information. The more fulsome version of this clip from YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zXjPQYgT25Q) clearly shows that the animal is capable of righting itself and swimming again when it’s bored with the floating. It is also readily apparent (from the full video and caption) that the animal is an experienced swimmer and is being closely supervised. The video caption cites a “respected authority” on hedgehogs as saying that swims, properly supervised by experienced handlers, can be very enjoyable for a hedgehog. I am not knowledgeable about the subject, nor am I familiar with the quoted authority, but I see absolutely nothing in the video to suggest anything other than that the animal is having a well-supervised good time. And comes out safely in the end!

    • TehMoo says:

Thanks for posting this, Chris, and taking the trouble to watch the entire Youtube video. I really appreciate the balance of facts up against uninformed fear.

      • Kazinga says:

Well, it just proves that the people on this site screaming “animal cruelty” at every video really don’t know what the hell they’re talking about. I’m glad people are actually looking into it if they’re worried or curious before making dumb accusations. The internet has boundless resources people–as, theoretically, do your minds. Use both before posting plz.

  20. shannon says:

No fair! My hedgie hates to swim!

  21. J says:

Wow, do people honestly think whoever filmed this did so, looked down and realized to their horror that their hedgehog drowned, watched the video and thought, “It’s still a cute video, lets post it.”?

  22. emily says:

around the part “I think the waters getting cold” totally reminded me of herbert the pervert.

  23. Raven says:

Well, when you see the video of YT you can see that they’re taking care of it. It is alive and it looked happy. First I thought it was dead but I strongly recommend (Srry for the grammar) to watch the YT video. You see she takes it out agian at the end. Srry if you don’t like my opinion…

  24. cardifg says:

why the hell couldn’t Sonic do this?!?!?!

  25. zoris says:

I dunno what’s more disturbing, the fact that these videos get posted or the fact that people call “trolling” when it’s pointed out that the animal looks unhappy. Go back to /b/ or wherever you people come from…

    • Kazinga says:

The animal ‘looks unhappy’ – totally subjective. I don’t think those people are trolls– they think whatever they want to ungrounded in fact and are totally judgmental of pet owners and pets they don’t know and aren’t qualified to asses, although they usually try. In other words, just stupid people.

Animals let you know when they are genuinely unhappy and distressed – they don’t just “look unhappy” to some mentally challenged denizen of the net.

  26. Jeep says:

Usually, when critters float on their backs, they’re dead (ooooh but he soooooooooooooo cuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuutttttttttttteeeeeeeeeeee)

  27. augustus says:

When people make comments mocking those who are worried about the animals looking unhappy, it almost makes me hope someone takes a video of them crying and posts it online for others to laugh at.

It’s normal for humans to cry, they do it all the time! Look at the face she’s making, it’s seeeew kyoote!

    • percocet princess says:

I’m sorry, but you’re just STUPID. Have you ever OWNED a hedgehog? Hell, have you owned a PET?

ANIMALS don’t just MAKE FACES when they are unhappy! They struggle and the make noises. For instance, have you ever tried to bathe a cat? They howl and flail! That’s an UNHAPPY ANIMAL! And you know what? That’s STILL not animal abuse! Do you know I’ve had two vets recommend that occasionally bathe my cat because his skin gets a bit greasy? Do you think a VET would recommend animal abuse? I don’t think so.

Hedgehogs make NOISES and FLAIL when they are upset, dear. They don’t just ‘make faces’! This is an ORDINARY hedgehog face, for hell’s sake! You obviously know NOTHING about animals!

Good god, please don’t come back to this site.

    • marusa says:

      Go read a book.

  28. sweetpotato18 says:

all you need to do is a quick google search for hedgehogs swimming to see they like to swim and are good at it!
    http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=hedgehogs+swimming

It’s nice that people are concerned about not wanting animal cruelty to be viewed as humorous, but please make sure you are correct before judging something as cruel before commenting. I’m sure most of the commenters have no real knowledge about hedgehogs – I know I sure didn’t …
    It’s getting depressing :(

the sub-caption to this video suggest people watch the entire video on YT to see the hedgehog is clearly not dead – you can see him float on his back a while, then easily right himself …

  29. Octavio says:

omg the hedgehog looks so cute!!!

  30. Cathryn Bauer says:

I found this video disturbing when I saw it on youtube, and I still do. While the animal is apparently well cared for in general, she is clearly trying repeatedly to get out of the water while humans coo over her distress. This is not right. They should be alert to her consistent efforts to get herself up and out on a slick surface. Not cute.

    • Jennybean says:

I fail to see the distress here. In the full video on Youtube the hedgehog is able to climb onto that log block to get out of the water, and it still chooses to jump back in and continue swimming.

  31. earplugsplz says:

The only animal cruelty going on in this video is the sound coming out of that woman’s mouth.

  32. TheSnark says:

You can clearly see this thread comes to no good. No lolspeak.
I still like the video, but I still mute the PC speakers. Srsly, that is no lolspeak either. I would not last half a minute in the vicinity of that woman.

  33. darkshines says:

I never usually comment on sites like this as I am not fluent in lolspeak, but I do like animal pictures and videos.

I watched the full video on youtube, the hedgehog is perfectly able to right itself should it want to (and it does) and it can also climb on the log that has been placed in with it (in other videos you see the hedgehog climbing on it and then jumping back in the water). When hedgehogs are stressed, they COMPLETLY spazz out, they will squeak, struggle and most dangerously, curl into a ball. All I see in this video is a happy, swimming animal being closely supervised by its owner. At the end, the owner carefully picks the hedgehog up and gives it a choice as to whether it wants more swim time or not, and the hedgehog doesn’t seem bothered so it is removed. I’m guessing if he jumped back in, he would get more tub time!

Hedgehogs are very strong swimmers, they are a wild animal naturally and are indigenous to countries that get a lot of rain (here in the UK we see hedgehogs all the time!). If you live in a wet country, you need to know how to swim. I have even seem squirrels swim when they have to (in the wild). Even freaking elephants can swim! (Not that there are many in the UK though). I can think of very, very few animals that can’t, actually. And most animals really like it, or at least see it as productive activity (tigers adore swimming, as most dogs).

I think people need to get a little bit of perspective here. Animals are not humans, they have no panic button when it comes to gently being lowered into nice warm water filled with toys while being supervised. This is NOT a hedgehog falling into a cold pond alone.

Calm down, enjoy the video as much as the hedgehog enjoyed it swim and get some perspective.

By the way, the number 1 killer of hedgehogs in the UK is the car, but I bet all the trolls on here will still drive one ;)

    • Mei says:

I saw a crushed hedgehog at the busstop once. Made me sad. :( (I live in Norway).

Also, fun fact, there are only three mammals in the world who cannot swim at birth; humans, apes and whales – we have to learn it. A mother whale needs to bring her baby to the surface to breathe until the baby whale learns to swim.

    • Thank you says:

Thank you darkshines! At least one person commenting on this video has a brain and common sense.

You are 100% correct darkshines, thank you for proving at least someone on here has a brain.

  34. Nekomaru says:

so when do you think they realized that the reason he was laying on his back in the water not moving was cause he drowned?

  35. Mei says:

I think the funniest thing about this vid is the squealing, baby-talking women. Also, hedgehog is very kyoot. :)

I worried a bit when I watched the video at first, but after reading all the comments, I fully realise that this animal is healthy and happy. I also watched the full video on YouTube, and the hidgehog clearly had no interest in getting out of the water until his handlers took him out. Even then he hesitated and looked like he wanted to get back in the water for a moment.

  36. PaganDucky says:

In the event of a water landing, your hedgehog may be used as a flotation device.

  37. gia says:

I’ve seen one too many drowned and bloated hedgehogs to find this video particularly amusing.

  38. TheSnark says:

Hedgehogs are normally flea-ridden beasties. I find it quite hedgie-friendly to try and drown all its fleas.
Let it swim in peace plz.

    • boB says:

You heartless b@stard! Drowning the fleas! How awful! OMG, I think I’m going to get sick! Don’t you realize that they have families, futures, dreams? And You. Just. Drown. Them! Are you mad? Talk them into leaving, present them with better alternatives, and have them move on. If you can’t do that…then maybe you don’t need to be around any animals at all.

  39. TheSnark says:

I am sure most of them can get away. Meanwhile, why don’t you start a swimming school for fleas? And lice?

  40. corkyy says:

i dont care what anyone says or what website i can go on, tht hedgehog looked dead at the end..

    • TheSnark says:

That hedgehog is as dead as you are blind. Or maybe not… you are much blinder than the hedgie is dead. It is definitively sparkling and bubbling. Old lazybones, follow the link given and watch the whole video. And kindly shut up, like Alice wished herself to do “like a telescope”.

    • Patrick says:

“There are two things that are infinite. The universe and human stupidity. And I’m not sure about the universe.” — A. Einstein.

Maybe if you WATCHED THE FULL VIDEO, you’d see a very much ALIVE (syn. not dead) hedgie right itself, on its own.

It can LOOK dead but not be.
