Kittehs and water don’t usually mix, but Nazzaning, a six-year-old Turkish Van cat (Turkish Vans are natural swimmers), is using water for her own good. She was suffering from partial paralysis in her paw and couldn’t walk anymore. A neurologist at the hospital suggested hydrotherapy to help Nazzaning walk again. He explained, “Her muscles needed to learn how to move the correct way again, and because she’s partially buoyant in water, if she makes a mistake it’s much less severe than if she’s walking on dry land.”
Nazzaning is one of the first cats to successfully undergo hydrotherapy treatment, and after nine sessions, she is almost back to her normal self running around and ruling the house.

I agree. It might be good therapy, but the cat obviously doesn’t want to be in the water. The cat doesn’t know it’s supposed to be a good thing.
All the best to Nazzaning for a full recovery.
I saw this on the news today. Apparently she regained full use of her foot again. I bet she’ll freak out the next time her family takes her near a pool though! XD I’m glad to see she’s doing better. All kitties need love, even when they’ve been hurt. ^^ It’s wonderful to see people out there helping hurt kitties!

Poor thing, she looks really scared
Wow, when I played the film my two cats were sleeping on the sofa. When they heard Nazzaning meowing they at once ran through the whole flat in search for this cat. They were pretty excited and irritated. Now they have gone into hiding.
All the best for Nazzaning
I think they heard the particular yowl as a distress call and tried to help. Maybe once they couldn’t help, they thought there was danger and hid away from it. Cats are awesome – I wish we could decode their vocalizations. I bet we’d find a whole complex language that is as full of nuances and emotion as our own!

I’m glad her humans didn’t think her therapy was “too cruel” to prevent them from trying it. As with most physical therapy, it may “hurt” but the end is worth it: “Nazzaning is one of the first cats to successfully undergo hydrotherapy treatment, and after nine sessions, she is almost back to her normal self running around and ruling the house.”
She looks so confused. “I’m spinning around but not going anywhere!”
Reminds me of when my cat had to be bathed once… not so nice.
Glad she’s okay tho c: Physical therapy isn’t supposed to be easy.
Wow! Am inshhpihered
Yes, since Nazzaning is Van and knows about swimming maybe her cries are confusion because legs aren’t working right or a little pain from paralysis. Either way, glad to hear she is better now.
Prevalent misconception in these comments: the cat is a Turkish Van, which is nicknamed “the swimming cat”. Many Turkish Vans actually love the water. The one in the video didn’t necessarily sound too pleased from her vocalizations, but swimming is not an unusual or unnatural pasttime for her breed. She may actually not dislike the therapy at all!
She did sound very unhappy, but maybe she was having a bad day. I enjoyed my PT for the most part, but I certainly had moments I grumbled about, especially at the end of the sessions.

Aww I knew she was turkish van right away before I read it! I love those kitties. I have two obese cats… they’re more than partially bouyant LOL but won’t have anything to do with water, at least not without hurting everyone within a 10 foot radius.
I have an obese kitty too! I wish I could give him some hydro-therapy for his fat belly! Unfortunately, he’s not a Turkish Van, and I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t like it! Cheers for Nazzaning, though! Glad to hear she’s better!
Horrible
There are other ways to train her muscles like a little “waggon” which can help her walk.
Did you read the article? This is a Van cat – they are natural swimmers. Nobody would try this with any other breed – not without considerable blood loss, anyway.
would this wagon you speak of help her regain full use of her paw or be her wheelchair for the rest of her life? because if it’s the latter, then the objective is slightly different i guess.
if it actually helps restore use of her paw, then guess that’s another option. but as annipuss pointed out, this breed of cat have been known to be natural swimmers, so think it’s ok. Then it depends on the effectiveness of each therapy…
It’s just water. Even though cats hate it, it won’t kill them and it’ll help her live better in the end. All cats know how to swim. This is doing her good.
I agree! Sometimes we must do unpleasant things for our own good and that same thing holds true when we are responsible for someone else.
Exactly! My kid hates occupational therapy, but he can dress himself now so the end product is worth it! You can’t coddle them just because they don’t like therapy!
just in response to this “cats can swim”-thing. just because they CAN do it, it doesn’t mean, they like it at all. and too much stress isn’t good for health either.
and there are little waggons which help injured pets to hold their weight but they can push themselves forward, just like the ones for babies.. (sorry, hard to describe for me in eglish)
They don’t have to like it, they must do it so they get CURED. Don’t you understand? Do you like to take injections? Does anybody like to make surgeries or therapy? No, but if it’s necessary, they must do it, it’s for their own good.
the little wagons your are talking about are more like wheelchairs and are not a form of therapy. the point of the hydrotherapy is to enable the cat/dog/human to regain use and strength in the affected limbs.
I know a certain Turkish Van who is going to get a bath this weekend … mine. Let’s all tell her to Stink or Swim!
Yeah, those are frightened dilated eyes on that kitty, so she’s probably worried about getting out of the pool alive with that disability. Still, her mommy is nearby, and it did help the cat to recover. There’s no way that mournful yowl could be interpreted as enjoyment, though!
She looks really upset.
omg this deminds be of when my cat got declawed he could barely walk so i carried him up stairs and to his food and water i really like when people do this for cats
And why would you declaw you cat?
Way to be carry your cat around after you maimed it for life.
What a saint you are.
(j/k I think you’re a terrible person for declawing your cat. Maiming an animal for your own convenience = fail)
Wow, how many cats are still declawed nowadays? Last time I checked it was a whole lot of them. Joey may not be as SUPA DUPA caring and awesome as you CLEARLY are but give the guy a break, it’s recently becoming common to not declaw your cats and that was hardly what his comment was about and he obviously knew the cat was in pain afterward. I think you’re a terrible person for this comment.
Way to go cat maimer (aka animal torturer).
Sorry wasn’t in lolspeak.
U shud nevar ownz a kitteh
Ai uhgree. Aneeone who cuts off half a kitteh’s toes is nawt a good catparent. The negative effects haz been publicized foh a long time, an everybodee should kno. Mai kitteh sometiems scratches thingz, but ai block the thingz ai don’t want him tew scratch. (Mai uther cat came tew me already declawed frum a rescue, an he is terrified of perching anywhere high or precarious becuz of mebbe fallin. Ai wish ai could give him hiz claws back.)
A whole lot of them? Only in the US, where cutting off a significant portion of your cat’s digits is somehow seen as an acceptable solution to ripped upholstery, etc. (‘Declawing’ a cat actually removes the entire last portion of the digit… like cutting off a finger at the top joint — see linked wiki article.)
Here in the UK this sort of disfigurement is not only viewed as disgusting and immoral, it is in fact illegal under the Animal Welfare Act 2006. Attitudes in the rest of Europe are similar.
HTH, HAND.
Done properly, declawing indoor cats is fine. They can lead perfectly happy lives with responsible owners. And it’s preferable to be declawed than put down because no one wants to adopt a cat with a clawing problem. Besides, I would target my argument–there’s definitely no need to declaw back claws ever–that’s what causes most problems with balance and pain, anyways, and cat’s need some natural defenses even if they are indoor cats.
I’ve owned several very happy cats that were all declawed in the front, and had excellent personalities, balance, and normal lives.
I think anti-declawing nazis do well to remember that not all people can bend over backwards in order to own a cat – Some people have babies or young children they don’t want to get scratched, or have landlords that only allow cats if they’re declawed. I lived in such a place IN EUROPE. It’s not selfish – the alternative is not being able to adopt a cat, and we already have to put so many down. It’s only a fail if you don’t research your vets, don’t help them recover properly, declaw them in the back, and aren’t 100% committed to keeping them for life.
You can’t be so blindly judgmental – if it were just for convenience, a lot of people wouldn’t do it because of the cost involved. I know there are non-surgical solutions, but they just don’t work for everyone.
Also: a lot of the ‘facts’ and arguments against declawing are not given good context – usually they compare cat anatomy to human anatomy, and it’s just not the same – you can’t do it well. I chalk it up to people being way too sensitive to any information fed to them–and gullible. Since it still happens, we could look for methods to improve the practice and set guideline and standards instead of just condemning it…
Well, I’ve known cats who’ve lived happy, contented lives with only three legs, but I wouldn’t recommend lopping one off for no good reason.
Your arguments are bunk, informed more by fear and doubt than experience. Cats don’t claw babies, and they won’t claw young children unless they feel physically threatened. Teach a toddler to respect animals and you’ll never have a problem.
As for clawing… if declawing was only done for cats with chronic scratching problems and whose owners can’t make reasonable adaptations to minimise the problem, you might have the start of an argument. But the number of declawing procedures carried out in the US doesn’t support that. Declawing operations are being carried out because it’s seen as “normal” and acceptable, and because owners really don’t seem to know that it’s possible to train a cat not to scratch… or not to scratch what you don’t want them to scratch, rather.
I have an indoor cat who has in the past had a clawing problem. Providing a couple of scratching post, covering certain overly tempting areas (sofa arms) with throws, and the occasional use of a firm voice has done wonders. Despite your implications, it took neither a huge amount of time, money, nor patience.
Finally, your characterisation of me as a “nazi” because I dislike the idea of mutilating animals is bitterly laughable. Almost the entire world agrees that declawing is an unnecessary and cruel procedure to put a cat through. It’s only in the US where there’s a significant “pro-declawing” movement. You’re the extremist here, not me.
I’ve had cats for twenty years now and I never did such horrible thing agains my cats.
Maiming an animal for your own convenience = fail
Sorry, but declawing a cat is EPIC FAIL!
No, rosie, in Europe and the others American countries other than the USA will send you to jail for animal cruelty for declawing the cat. It’s a cruel, barbaric practice that each and every self-respecting vet would refuse to perform.
Unless Nazzaning’s owner picked up a hammer and maimed her cat on purpose, this is *nothing* like you getting your cat declawed. I’m still trying to figure out why we even have animal cruelty laws on the books if there are so many loopholes.
declawing is a crime in many countries and even the US begin to see this now!! http://www.pawsneedclaws.com/DeclawAdvocacyNews.php (for example)
You are horrible for declawing your cat! No furniture or drapes are worth maiming an animal in this way! Shame on you!!!!
I am glad humans a trying to help the kitty; but the “meow” sounds like a distress call.
Well, babies also cry when they get injections, that doesn’t mean the doc should stop giving them injections and let them die. I am not a vet and I can’t tell if this therapy is actually helping the animal, but if it is, the meowing is irrelevant.
I’m not sure if da cat love that…
Bless her heart. She is actually moving her paw. Hope she can walk again soon. She is in my prayers.

Why is the kitteh swimming with David Spade?
THIS is exactly what I was thinking!

Poor girl, but I’m glad that it did her good. She’s probably freaked out because she wasn’t in control of this swim time.
So thankful for these kind folk and gentle people. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
makes me want to go hug my brother’s cat, he’s mostly turkish van
(he has some coloring on his legs, which my sister read full turkish van cats don’t have)
This is so interesting…I was JUST reading one of the Warriors Cats books (Power of Three Book 4, “Eclipse”) and in it an apprentice warrior, a grey female called Cinderpaw, who injures her leg, and she learns to swim so that she can regain her strength. The book’s a couple of years old, but it’s interesting how prescient it turned out to be.
But I thought all Van had two different colored eyes? Maybe this cat is just part Van…
I really hope she gets better. Poor baby…
Awesome kittycat……me thinks she is superior pussy now..XX
Aw… the poor thing didn’t sound too happy about this. And her head kept going under! I’m glad she didn’t drown. Also, I hope she makes a full recovery. Poor little kitty.
Turkish Vans like water? Shame no-one told this one!
I remember another video of a very fat cat that was getting swim training to get slimmer. The cat got into the water and started to swim and then discovered that it floated anyway so it stopped swimming and just floated. End of excersice.
Ha ha! That’s what my fat cat would probably do!
I wunder if mah Maine Koon kitteh will shwims lyk dis kitteh?
too sad too comment :’-(
Poor kitty!!! I think that’s horrible, that cat looks so scared !
my got
hmmm…according to wikipedia those cats like to swim…so it’s not only “they can swim”, but even they want to…so I don’t think the meows are related to the circumstance that she is in water but (maybe) that the guy is dragging her back/that her legs hurt/not doing what they should do.
I’m surprised the “therapist” didn’t need a chain mail vest over his set suit…
That’s so horrible. The cat is clearly distressed. Her paw probably would’ve healed up in 9 weeks without the treatment anyway, have they done controlled trials to prove this hydrotherapy quackery even works? Poor kitty. mao
Read the story again — it wasn’t a paw injury, the cat was partially paralysed, and was referred to the hydrotherapist by its neurologist.
Nor is hydrotherapy “quackery”. It’s a well established physiotherapy technique for rebuilding leg strength and coordination when the person or animal is too weak to walk. It’s a pretty straightforward idea, really.
Glad she’s healing. My kitty didn’t like hearing her woeful mews though.
She definitely looks very unhappy to be so wet, but if it’s for her own good, she’ll just have to deal with it. I hope she gets well soon.
Hugs for the kitteh {{{kitteh}}}
Get better soon
Hmmm… I has not been here in a lot of whiles, but for some reason as soon as I got here I started craving CAEK!!
Choklit Lava Caek anyone?
Aww she floats!
Get better kitteh
we loves joo
So cute! It’s so incredible and beautiful….
How is this cruel? The owner would have spent hundreds of dollars on her kitty to make sure kitteh got better.
I bath my cat (about once every 2 months) as she was found at the roadside at 5 weeks and was never taught how to bath properly. Does that make me cruel? My kitty gets the best food and the best loves. Bathing her is undignified for her but it stops her getting skin problems
Idiots.
That cat looks positively terrified. There is no way I’d let some moron put my cat in the water.
Jerks.
They should have given her some “floaties” to keep her face out of the water.
She looks terrified!
Sometimes I wonder if the ends truely justify the means?
Floaty cat r cyooooot
Kitteh is not amused but scared…I don´t think this is the only way to help her…Stupid people and stupid waterguy!
What is wrong with them? Their heart is in the right place and its sweet of them to help the cat but do they not have the common sense to realize the cat’s nose HAS TO BE ABOVE WATER ALL THE FREAKIN TIME?? The cat keeps thinking its about to die each time they do this. Hold her stomach, let her face and nose stay out of the water, then they will be helping her without throwing her into a panic each time. Her neck muscles do get tired holding herself up outside the water.. you wouldn’t do it this way with children, cats drown even quicker than kids. Good thought, bad execution.
To everyone who asked what is wrong with this and cats get bathed at their home etc…. this cat is NOT being bathed.. .its in a swimming pool… with nobody holding her head up out of the water !! How would you like to be in her position, with an adult shoving you away from the sides of the pool each time you try to get out, where you have never swum before and your muscles slowly get tired keeping your head out of the water.
Again, there is a humane way to do it, its called using their COMMON SENSE… which is obviously not happening here. The idea is great, it works for adult human beings, but if you throw a baby in water and push it away from the sides of the pool, it will eventually drown. So yeah, they don’t let her drown and occasionally hold their hand under her stomach but they need to do this ALLLL THE TIME… why let her THINK she’s drowning. You can help her without almost killing her through fear.
*Shakes my head at the stupidiity in the execution of some well meaning ideas.
is it just me or is the kitty’s left leg *really* odd-looking?
The first thing i thought of was “I’LL TALK I’LL TALK”
cat doesn’t look too happy about the whole situation.
Kitteh dos NOT want, heers plees of da kitteh. MEOW! MEOW! I sav u kitteh!!!
dats nawt a happe kitteh.

Kitteh not amused!
Kitteh does not look happy, i hope kitteh makes a full recover soon
Cat thinks:
WTF humans?!
Stupid leg, if I could just use it to get out of this yuckie water…!
That’s why it worked
awww she looks so worried and unhappy.but it is all for her good.I hope she is all ding great now.
