Saving Kittehs in the Midst of War

funny cat pictures cat marines

Kiki and US Marine Brian Chambers

Kittehs Kiki and Keykey have found a home in the midst of war. And it’s all thanks to three US Marines, Brian Chambers, Chris Berry and Aaron Shaw. They started a mission to help find homes for stray cats that they found while serving in Afghanistan. After finding Keykey injured by a c-wire, Berry took care of his wounds and nursed him back to health and the two of them have been best friends every since.

And now Keykey is living with Berry’s parents in Michigan while Kiki is living with Chambers’ parents in Texas and both are enjoying their new loving homes! Those Marines are definitely heroes in our book as is also the group of Royal Marines that started the organization called Nowzad in 2007. This organization rescues stray and abandoned animals in Afghanistan and Iraq.

I love these guys. and would happily marry either of them after having a now ex spouse who HATED cats. I should have known better.

    • DaMamaJama says:

      Seriously – are they single?

    • Leigh says:

I have always told people, if you meet someone who HATES animals, RUN, don’t walk to the nearest exit because that person will end up being abusive.

      • Myra says:

I so agree with you Leigh. My brother-in-law told me that he kicked the dog into the wall and threw a cat against the wall. He is alone now and I can’t feel bad for him. He was also a cop. Ya don’t mess with animals and kids!!!

        • amandakitteh says:

And also, don’t mess with people who are rude to restaurant servers. Baaaaaaaad sign on your first date.

        • Bearfoot says:

it takes a real man to kick a dog.. but don’t worry dogs aren’t the only thing that bites.. karma can do it as well.

      • Dianne Blair says:

You’re absolutely right. My EX-husband was like that. I should have never married anywho said they hated cats.

      • Michael M says:

My grandmother always said that you should be careful of people who don’t like animals and that treat animals how they will treat people if they can get away with it. Then again, she also heard voices, but the stuff about small animals was spot on.

    • debbie says:

I’m too old to marry them, but I’ll adopt them. I didn’t know my spouse disliked animals period and I had 4 cats. 1 dog, and 2 rabbits when we married. Go figure.

Very cute—the guys and the kittens

  8. eagleghostwind says:

And may the animal angels live forever.

  9. Chani says:

These men will never again have trouble getting laid if they use that as a pick up line. Ever.

    • Kristina says:

*snort* I was thinking the exact same thing before even reading the story.

    • anne says:

“So, you know I rescued kittens while serving in Afghanistan” would totally work on me!

      • Wicked says:

And these guys get the most disrespect from people back at home….

people who fight for the safety of their fellow man and beast are definantly at the top of my list of “the most honorable”

I hope this guy makes it back safely and I hope that he has a good life. All of them.

      • I think everyone here would agree with you, anne. In fact, I kinda feel bad for the rest of the Marines out there. Now everyone is going to want not just a Marine, but a Marine who *saves kittens!*

    • Daniel says:

I don’t know… a little sparrow with a broken wing in Afghanistan was hopping along following me. I tried to nurse it to health but it died after a few weeks. That story never got me anywhere, though I don’t usually bring it up because it makes me sad. I knew it was about to die when it’s breathing changed, so I was carrying it to a certain location, but before i got there, it took one long last breath, turned and looked at me, and exhaled. Maybe it wasn’t really looking at me, maybe it was. I don’t think crushed up granola bars (the nutty hard kind) are the optimal food, but my resources were limited.

      • Erin says:

Daniel, you tried; you shared an honest look with another living being; you shared your resources. There are plenty on the planet who would not have done the same. May you emerge from this war with your heart still open and your ear always attuned to a bird’s voice chirping “Thank you.”

      • Emma says:

That would so work on me!!! Just made me fill up….!

      • Dianne Blair says:

That is so sad. My daughter raised 4 little sparrows from before they even had fuzz on them. Unfortunately, they all died around 5 weeks within a couple of days. They would fly around the room and land in her hand. At least you tried to do the right thing. Come home safe.

      • Kimi Su-Su says:

If the bird was following you i feel that meant he needed you. You were there for him in his last weeks of life. I’m sure you made them as good as you possibly could for the little guy. Please, don’t ever feel ashamed or bad for doing something good. You are truely a hero. : )

      • Lynnette R. Scurr says:

Daniel, don’t ever be sorry – yes, just a little bird, sweet, small, innocent, defenceless – you cared for that wee one – trust me, they DO know who cares! You made that sparrow’s last bit of time on earth easier – you were willing to share some of the food you had to feed her, you carried her to a safe place and were with her to the end. Believe me, little soft bird went to her Home happy. Peepelz, thiz ain’t politiks or propaganda, these pages lighten the soldiers days – they need a laugh, share a touching story or how their day went – if ICHC does it, then let’s cheezburger kitteh those brave ones till they

  13. Morgaine says:

I have been lurking here for a long while. I had to write on this one. Normally I would use the proper language, but this is requires me to speak my heart. This is a true man. A man who loves and protects the helpless, the ones who have no voice and cannot speak for themselves. The innocents who suffer, well he is there for them and gives of himself to ease their pain. I cried when I saw this picture because it reminded me that there is good in this world and true men of courage, honor and valor who love all living things. He put his life on the line to protect the most defensless the sweet little baby resting in his arms. Sorry I must relurk. Thank you.

    • Leonie says:

      Well said, Morgaine. :)

What these men are doing has brought a tear to my eye. I’m glad there are people out there that love animals so much they are willing to do anything to help, and not turn a blind eye. So often there’s horrible stories in the news about cruelty, it’s easy to forget that there are great people out there who do care, and who do help. :) I hope those guys will be alright, and get home safely.

    • August Knight says:

      Amen.

    • ZC says:

Nicely put, Morgaine, and thank you. I’m so happy this man did a good thing for an animal out of the kindness of his heart, and it warms me to my soul to know that there are people who love so deeply like this. It is the simplest kind of love to love an animal, and yet it is so profound and there is nothing like it, and few things sweeter, in the world. Thank the gods for these wonderful men.

    • Richard says:

Morgaine, I’m a 60-year-old man (and not at all attracted to Marines, although I admire them), and I agree with you 100%.

After what seems like endless weeks of reading disappointing, depressing, frustrating, and angering news on the web, this was most welcome. Best story I’ve seen in forever. Made my week.

(And I wuv the kittehs. )

      • blueprairie says:

“Morgaine, I’m a 60-year-old man (and not at all attracted to Marines, although I admire them), and I agree with you 100%.”

You’d be surprised, Richard. I went through Officer Candidate School with a former Miss Ohio.

Hugo, when I joined the Marines I thought it was because I had graduated from school, in Detroit, right after the second gas crisis in the 1970′s. I had no idea I REALLY did it because of a deep, long-concealed, visceral need to kill someone*. Thank you for explaining that to me.

(*funnily enough, while on active duty I don’t ever remember meeting anyone I really wanted to kill. Since I’ve retired, however, they’re popping up all over the place).

        • Personage says:

“…funnily enough, while on active duty I don’t ever remember meeting anyone I really wanted to kill. Since I’ve retired, however, they’re popping up all over the place…”

This is the reason I decided against the military. Why encourage myself? I’ve managed not to kill anyone, probably because I don’t know how. So, frankly, I applaud your restraint.

    • 4kittehmom says:

Bravo Brian and friends. Thanks for saving the kittehs! Does anyone know if they need anything like foster homes, donations or just kudos? I’d loooooove to halp!

    • Amy says:

That is the stupidest thing I have ever read. Kill people not cats. Really. I’m not in favor of wantonly killing animals, but while it might seem cute and heartwarming to read a story of a soldier rescuing a kitty…how about the fact that real human being are dying. PEOPLE.

      • LE says:

You know, it’s not just about the “animals.” It’s about the fact that anyone who can be that compassionate about animals can be compassionate about people.

And vice versa — anyone who can ignore animal suffering…or CAUSE animal suffering, can do the same to people.

Yes, people are dying. PEOPLE. But PEOPLE can speak for themselves. Animals can’t. Without compassion for animals, there is no compassion for people. When will people learn that? They aren’t “just animals.” They are living things that feel pain, just like you.

Look in jails at rapists and murders and child abusers. Then tell me those PEOPLE are better than that kitten. Go ahead. Convince me.

No ANIMAL has ever beaten me, robbed me, or stabbed me in the back.

        • Personage says:

To elaborate on your riff here, rapists, murderers and child abusers frequently have a history of cruelty, dating to childhood, often starting with animals. Contemporary law enforcement in most areas of the US and in other “civilized” countries concur that cruelty to animals is very regularly the first indication that a minor could be predisposed towards cruelty to humans. There are numerous case studies supporting this.

I’m not of the personal opinion that any life is inherently more valuable than another, though I concur there’s a huge difference between the immediate relevance of a person you don’t like on a bus being annoying and a person you don’t like hiding in the dark aiming a gun at you. Almost all of us would do what we feel we must to survive in that situation. (IMO, the discussion of the situation arose is inappropriate for this venue.)

But in any case, it follows to think (to me) that a person who can demonstrate kindness to animals in the midst of war might be better prepared and more willing to demonstrate kindness to a person in the midst of war. Compassion is a habit.

          • LE says:

            That’s exactly it. Well said.

And Amy, really…what is your problem? So what if these Marines have saved some kittens? They didn’t take anything away from the humans you are so worried about. They didn’t pass by crying babies to save the kittens. And how do you know they haven’t helped the humans over there? A LOT of soldiers have helped get children to the US for needed surgeries, have used their own money in fund-raising efforts, have put their lives on the line FOR the native people.

So should these guys have just left the kittens to die? For what reason? They aren’t taking anything away from people. Just because a war is going on, there should be no stories about the bright spots? No one should stop to help those in need?

I’m so glad the media isn’t run by people like you, or the ONLY thing we’d ever hear about are car accidents, murders, and shootouts.

The world would certainly be a more miserable, dark place than it is.

  33. Moxichick says:

I’m so glad that these two soldiers got to send their kitties back home. I know that the military discourages having pets. I sent my brother a gallon aquarium (he got the goldfish from a local vendor) while he was serving in the Army in Iraq. He had to hide it every time they had inspections, but it kept him sane in a hell-zone. Props to these two young warriors.

  39. Trainwreck Chase says:

This is why America is so different and so great. I can’t think of any nation in history where the people of the war would lead a cause to save the animals affected by a current war. Their maybe a lot of things wrong with America, but we need to do ourselves a favor and remember things like this which make our nation so great. Soliders, Marines, trained how to DESTROY the enemy, will take the time to save a kitten. Too cool.

    • history says:

I can think of one… the Nazi’s… they loved all animals (and went to a lot of lengths to protect them) Hitler actually owned a few dogs and was really tough against anyone who hurt animals!

they go kill ppl but save kitties…. think about it….

    • Orangello says:

The kitties weren’t shooting at them or their comrades, duh. I would imagine that if a kitty showed up slinging lead from an AK47, it wouldn’t get the same warm reception, but kitties are smarter than jihadists.

    • Mae says:

Animals are never our enemy. However, armed men who are trying to kill you are.

Why don’t YOU think about it? Soldiers don’t kill because they want to. They kill to protect themselves, to protect our country, and to further freedom.

      • Hugo says:

Actually most soldiers are soldiers because they chose to. They WANT to be there, they want to be in a position in which they may have to kill someone. This is by choice, and whatever idealistic concept they use to justify their choice, is just that, a justification..

Yes, lovely to see this kids took care of the kitties.

Worrisome that nobody cares that such young guys are out there having to kill people. (Some of them, presumably as innocent as the kitties.)

War is war, people. War is a choice.

        • Yianna Chambers says:

Please don’t believe they’re over there to just kill. They’re securing areas from insurgents, rebuilding the communities that were taken over by the taliban, aiding the injured (both adult and children) They’re not just protecting Americas freedom but they’re also protecting the freedom of the civillian people in Afghanistan, so please don’t assume or imply they’re over there simply because they want to be barbaric and massacre everyone they come across.

Yianna – Cpl Brian Chambers wife.

          • Hugo says:

            Dear Yianna,

We have all heard about the evil ones, and also accounts where soldiers come back baffled because they didn’t find evil ones. I sincerely wish your husband and his friends and the kitties a safe life, as much as I wish the same to all people there.

Peace will only be possible the day every single man and woman on earth refuses to go anywhere with the possibility of having to kill, subjugate or control anyone.

Even if Brian is not barbaric, and I am sure he is a lovely chap and all, the system he is supporting and keeping alive is.

Peace to you and your loved ones.

        • LE says:

Oh, please. The reason MOST people join the military is for an education or a secure job. MOST people join the military for support positions…to become a dentist, air traffic controller, cook, accountant, mechanic, pilot. Job experience that can be used in the civilian world. I know this because I was in the military. My brother, my uncle, and my husband are all military and not one of them has ever fired a gun at another human, nor have they wanted to.

Yes, war sucks. And once you join the military, you are SENT to war…it isn’t a choice. You chose to join, but you also choose to buy products made in sweat shops in China. Buy drugs that support scumbag killers. Buy products tested on animals. Buy products from stores that treat employees badly.

We all make choices, and in the grand scheme of things, joining the military for a good education and life experience can be a pretty darned good choice.

And in case you missed it, there are a LOT of stories about soldiers helping humans — both domestically (Toys For Tots, anyone?) and overseas in Iraq and Afghanistan. Why is it that ONE story about compassion toward animals raises ire and cries of “Oh, but the HUMAN tragedy!!!) Geez, let these soldiers, who are alone and need a pick-me-up, take care of a few injured kittens.

          Yes, how heinous.

        • Emily S. says:

Soldiers aren’t always soldiers because they want to kill people. First of all, I have a lot of friends and acquaintances that joined pre-9/11, who saw the military as a decent way to get through college without acquiring mind-blowing amounts of debt – you did your 4(?) years of service, you went to college, then every couple years after that you’d be minorly inconvenienced because you technically were on reserve duty, then you weren’t even on reserve duty any more and by then you were a normal, successful adult with a family. No killing required, occasionally even no overseas deployment required.

Then there are other reasons. For example, any able-bodied, ostensibly straight young adult could walk into a recruiting center and get a job. After months of being broke and fruitless job-searching, that would sound pretty appealing, and especially to females who technically aren’t supposed to be in combat and therefore technically wouldn’t have to worry about the possibility of killing someone (technically). Between that reason, the college thing, and the fact that many high school graduates in rural areas have skill sets that fit well with the army, many see it as an “out” from whatever dead-end situation they’re currently trying to deal with.

Then, there are people who want to keep the country safe, or perform specialised careers (explosive ordnance disposal, nuclear vessel engineering, large-scale cyberdefense, space shuttle piloting) that aren’t really feasible in the civilian world, and other people with yet other reasons…

    • Grspaw says:

The cats aren’t trying to murder everyone who doesn’t follow their 11th century backward beliefs. The cats aren’t murdering little girls who are trying to get an education. The cats don’t go around planning to blow up schools, hospitals, etc.

Thank you, Orangello, Mae, and Grspaw. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

And two kitties already in the States didn’t get adopted, and ended up in the gas chamber. Think about that, too.

    • Jason says:

Pacifist – 1. A person who won’t risk themselves to protect others. 2. A person who doesn’t realize that there are actual evil people in the world and that destroying them DOES NOT put you on the same moral plane. 3. A self-rightous person who thinks that THEY ALONE want peace. 4. The first people to be annihilated by totalitarianism (which they themselves allowed to fester by turning a blind eye) 5. A person who is more dedicated to THEIR morals than to protecting the lives of the innocent.

now, this unending self-righteous comments about our sexy cat-saving heroes really makes me wanna puke – no matter how much i like cats!
guys, there is a war, an occupation and a major humanitarian crisis going on over there – do you care as much about the Afghani people as you do about Afghani cats?
sorry, no matter how many kitties get saved by our soldiers, we are still the bad guys in this!

    • proudvet says:

Wow just wow. You got a lot of nerve trashing those of us that have done and are doing the job that you are unwilling to do. I saw things in theatre that you would not believe in relation to the “afghani people”. Those MEN are doing an outstanding thing and we should all be proud of them. If you are unable to acknowledge it privately or publicly, then keep your mouth shut. I’m proud of having served next to guys like this. And those kittens are as valuable to us as they are to the new families. SUA SPONTE

    • Duffy says:

“WE” are bad guys? Sorry, hz, but the men over there are doing their duty under the conditions of their countries’ service, and anything they can do out of the goodness of their hearts is worth doing. And don’t think our guys don’t spend a lot of time on humanitarian efforts too.
(Sorry Ize tawking to a troll an not in lolspeek but I gots relatifs ober dere in BOTH wars and “WE” aint badgies.)

    • Sandra Olsen-Halsey says:

Get educated and pull your self-righteous head out of your a**. Go to legitimate news site (NYTimes, Wash Post, LA Times) and see what our troops have been doing for the Afghan people.

    • muzlimkitteh says:

no no no “we” are not the badguys in this our troups are pawns at WORST…I mean if you wanna do the bleeding heart we are the world let’s hold hands with the taliban crap then blame the governemnts involved, not the troups, the majority of the military….I’m willing to bet are good hearted people who are trying to do the right thing…..

The real bad guys are the dudes going into the villages and bullying the people into covering theire arse or fight along side them in the name of religion.

I care very much about the afghani ppl, half of my family comes from that region. I am glad that our guys are doing things to help the afghani and iraqi animals and that they are finding some comfort and purpose in these innocent furry critters

    • meowcenaryDOOM says:

STFU! The guys cling to their sanity over there and if my friend Chambers found it in a cat then you need to f*ck off! He’s deployed to protect YOUR freedom. Piss off.

    • LeftHanded says:

I am glad that we have freedom of expression — no matter what side of the discussion you happen to be on. Let’s be kinder to one another here. C’mon.

    • Hierophantria says:

Don’t take your bulls**t out on OUR soldiers, OUR friends, OUR family, OUR loved ones. They get the last word – “Yes Sir.” They do their job and all they want is to come home in one piece to their friends and family. While there, in hell, they find what comfort they can. You sir, or madam, need to shut the hell up.

    • joolee says:

Ghandi also put it very well: “To my mind, I hold that the more helpless a creature, the more entitled it is to protection by man from the cruelty of man.”

Much respect and love for these US Marines, and the Royal Marines!

      • joolee says:

Also, I’m pretty sure I’m fawning over people who help animals without feeling any sense that I am superior for expressing my opinions.

Hence, not self-righteous; however, the insinuation of moral superiority in your comments is an excellent example.

        Main Entry: self–righ·teous
        Pronunciation: \-ˈrī-chəs\
        Function: adjective
        Date: circa 1680

: convinced of one’s own righteousness especially in contrast with the actions and beliefs of others : narrow-mindedly moralistic

It’s foolish to assume that simply because I am compassionate towards animals and soldiers in wartime that I don’t have the intellect and compassion to care that others are suffering and to recognize that this is a complicated issue, as all wars are.

I actually have plenty of compassion to go around. Even for narrow-minded trolls.

    • Richard says:

Yeah, I care about the Afghani people. Especially the women who don’t want to be treated like cattle or chattel slaves, and the men who don’t want to submit to the 7th-century barbarians we’re trying to stop.

You’re ignorant. And you feel smug and self-righteous putting your ignorance on display for the world to see. I don’t think that’s working out for you.

    • Hugo says:

      Bravo!

    • LE says:

So…these guys shouldn’t have saved the cats? It isn’t like they are taking anything from the Afghani people to do it, so what’s your problem? How is saving a few kittens hurting anybody?

Thing is, anyone who is willing to take the time to show compassion to kittens will show compassion to PEOPLE.

I truly don’t understand why, when a story about animals pops up, people get all riled, as if saving an animal takes away from humans somehow. As if these guys made a choice to leave a kid dying in a ditch and instead saved the kitten instead.

Seriously, there are some bitter people in this world. There’s a reason I like animals better than I like most people…

  100. Carol says:

Bless those men! I hope the kittehs never pounce on their families at 3:00 a.m. or vomit on their living room rugs or shred their newspapers … and if they do I hope everybody understands it’s just a kitteh’s way of saying thank you for saving me.

  103. Ashley says:

“Those Marines are definitely heroes in our book.” That dig might have been unintentional, but I didnt like it. They are heroes for serving, regardless of saving the kittehs.
But I give them extra hero-credit for doing this for displaced, orphaned or abandoned kittehs.

  104. Maria says:

Thanks. For serving, but even more for caring.

  105. toxikberry says:

Bless them all……these kittehs are in very good homes now…..kudos to them for taking them out of a dangerous place….the photos are sweet…While they were eith them at least there was something to remind the guys that there is sanity still in this world. Hopefully they will help other kittehs and doggies find good homes away from the fighting..

  107. NadiaNemo says:

Now if we could just clone these guys and get them to the shelters here to save the kitties and goggies stateside.

  108. xoriadax says:

I’m a liberal peacenik, and I tend to think of soldiers as souless beings brainwashed to think killing fellow humans is ok. The fact that these young men would take the time and effort to do this really made me stop and reconsider. While I still disagree with war in any form, it gives me hope to see positivity like this in action.

They’re quite a small volunteer organisation so they’re grateful for any support! So thankyou on behalf of all the animals that are waiting to be rescued :)

      Hear, hear!

Nope, definitely not a souless baby killer! I’ve had family in the military so it tears me up inside every time I hear someone speak ill of our troops.

The real reason why these guys go out there where others are unwilling to tread is not because the lame reasons provided by the politicians and the governments, but because they want to do what is right for humanity’s sake where it is needed most, even though its under the evil cloud called war. That is the only reason why I ever supported them in Iraq and Afghanistan. People (and in this case animals) needed help that their governments couldn’t (or wouldn’t) provide.

And just when I’ve pretty much given up on Iraq, I met someone who as a young girl had to flee with her family because Saddam Hussein didn’t agree with the beliefs their sect held. When our troops left after the First Gulf War he had them picked off, one by one. She lost four brothers and a grandfather. Eventually they made it here to the States and now this woman has three sweet children. They’re practically part of our family now even though there is no blood relation.

That is why I continue to believe in our troops. No family (and no animal) should have to go through that.

Dear ICHC: your website is lovely. It is my home page, I see it every day. It is very disappointing to see political stuff on your website (ie. the US army in Afghanistan). I humbly ask that you please refrain from doing this, it is not the purpose of your website to raise controversial issues in such a one-sided manner. That is the domain of people like Rush Limbaugh or Bill O’Reilly. Some might think these ‘soldiers’ are heroes, but many people will consider this piece insulting, blatant propaganda. It’s also awful to have to read the vacuous comments from your readers about the ‘good work’ the army is doing, protecting their ‘freedom’. It’s a widely accepted fact that the US has been endangering itself and its citizens for decades by brutally invading other countries & telling them what to do, while insisting that they don’t have to follows the ‘rules’ they impose on other countries. This double standard is what endangers America, by somehow asserting that the US can do whatever it wants, including terrorize innocent civilians, because they’re the ‘good guys’. Until this unvelievable arrogance is removed from the US mindset, Americans will always be in danger. It’s disapponting to see this mindset trumpeted in the form of propaganda on ICHC. Please stick with cute pictures of cats that don’t involve controversial political issues. Thanks.

    • Meow says:

All I see is cat loving, hot men and kittehs. I think you’re reading into it too much.

    • Yianna Chambers says:

This ICHC post isn’t a controvercsial political issue, it’s about a couple of marines who raised and adopted kittens in Afghanistan, can they not be discussed too just because of their job?
It only becomes political when someone such as yourself posts a LOOONG message about…Rush Limbaugh, propaganda, brutal invading, terroising innocent civillians, america in danger and trumpeted forms of propaganda being posted by icanhazcheeseburger, seriously?! There’s no need for it. You’re the only one making this political.
Yianna Chambers – Cpl Brian Chambers wife

Oorah to Mrs. Chambers! Caring about animals is simply part of being a decent human being, and not political at all. No matter what my political views, I see nothing but good in people reaching out to aid their helpless and/or suffering fellow creatures, whether human or animal. You should definitely be proud of your husband!

      • Georgia says:

        OK, yeah, I agree.

    • ReallyBill? says:

@billgrundy: Wow. Just wow. Pompous, grossly over-sensitive AND and dumb as a sack of hammers. What a winning combination, sir.

Here’s a “radical” proposal, to make a small bon mot: READ SOMETHING ELSE.

    • jalna says:

i agree with you bill. but if they’re not already aware of what you’ve said…

    • Georgia says:

I freaking hate the war in Afghanistan. I wouldn’t call this propaganda, though. There is a human (and humane, and maybe even animal-loving) side to many people that transcends politics and makes frivolous, undefined war all the more poignant and sad.

I guess I care enough to comment because I’m with you very strongly in spirit – I just feel like this particular subject might be an exception. It could also equate to one more numbing agent, sure, but the fact that these guys are almost certainly taking major shit from their colleagues in order to save little baby CATS, of all things, is pretty symbolic. I hope.
      :)

  162. siobhan says:

As much as I wish there would be no need for soldiers all around the world… (and even though I am late) I just have to say THANK YOU! to every soldier who cares for life. No matter if he is stationed at home or far away from home (but even more to those who have to deal with their absence from home and the dangers of war). Each and every one of you proves that there is no place without hope. I don’t care which nation you are from, I don’t care who sent you to war, I don’t care which religion you have oder which political system you come from… every soldier who cares for life is a soldier “doing it right”. I just hope all of you guys get back home soon and hopefully healthy.

Well… and while I’m already at it… here’s another THANK YOU to everyone helping someone (be it a human or an animal). Wether you’re lending a hand or giving money, wether you’re signing petitions or protesting out loud… wether you foster or you tend to the homeless, wether work for some organisation that helps or rescue others as a passerby… gosh there are so many possibilities to help… no matter how you help… you all are heroes… Thanks :)

Hurray for these heroes!! These brave men and women of our armed forces protect our lives and our country. Because they are willing to fight, the ignorant idiots have the FREEDOM to sit on their cowardly behinds and complain about thing they know nothing of. Most of these brave people have no desire to kill anyone, but they do have a desire to perform their duty and protect FREEDOM. Hurray for the Royal Marines! Hurray for the US Marines. Hurray for these three wonderful men – Berry, Chambers, and Shaw for their bravery and their hearts of gold.

  179. Josie says:

    So awesome!

  180. Geisha_Girl says:

I wish these posts could reach further and wider than this network can send them. Here are real, compassionate, HUMAN human beings in incredibly dangerous situations, and they still have enough love in their hearts to take care of defenseless animals. (Not that the animals don’t help them; a warm fuzzy body that wants to hang around you and give you love helps immensely in the war theater.) I can’t say how much I respect our servicemen and women and I’m so glad there are opportunities for at least a few of them to know some unconditional love and yes, some fuzziness in the hell that they’re in right now.

You know what’s awesome about this? We Canadians have been doing this for cats and humans since the war in Afghanistan started! Now why can’t we get a photo-op trying to show the world we don’t just bomb people without remorse or targeting? Oh yeah….we already don’t do that…

    • Megs says:

For anyone who hasn’t gotten out to the Nowzad site yet, here’s a similar story featuring a Canadian soldier:

  189. tracy says:

so cute! i loves the kittehs

  190. JibbaJabba says:

    BillGrundy,

Did ICHC post anything political? No. Your post is ridiculous and stinks of you jsut wanting to gush about your personal cause.

This pic/post was nothing more than showing people in a stressful and dangerous climate taking care of innocent and helpless animals who did NOTHING to contribute to any death and destruction in the area. Had it been Afghan soldiers helping kittens I’d have felt good about that as well.

It’s about Human Beings showing one of the facets that makes Human Beings great even in the middle of some of the worst Human caused horrors on Earth.

    That’s not political.

If the readers of this site wish to express their admiration for the people in the pictures or their compatriots, that is their right, just as it is your right to post the sort of drivel that you posted. You’re just as self-righteous, or more so, as the people you comment on.

And to save you some follow up post-gasm, I’m not a flag waving warmonger. I’m also not a bleating sheep peacnik either.

Oh, and Ryamos, you’re a jerk. I’ve always thought very highly of Canadians. I’ll try and maintain that despite your asinine comments.

  191. These guys are awesome! So glad they are doing this. Adorable pics!

  192. Jess says:

  195. Bubba Moose Cat says:

Ditto JibbaJabba’s remarks. I just saw nice people rescuing kittehs in a bad situation. We did the same when I was in Kosovo, but there was no ICHC back then.

    From the Halls of Montezuma,
    To the shores of Tripoli;
    We fight our country’s battles
    In the air, on land, and sea;
First to fight for right and freedom
    And to keep our honor clean;
We are proud to claim the title
    Of United States Marine.

Our flag’s unfurled to every breeze
    From dawn to setting sun;
We have fought in every clime and place
    Where we could take a gun;
In the snow of far-off Northern lands
    And in sunny tropic scenes;
You will find us always on the job
    The United States Marines.

Here’s health to you and to our Corps
    Which we are proud to serve;
In many a strife we’ve fought for life
    And never lost our nerve;
If the Army and the Navy
    Ever look on Heaven’s scenes;
They will find the streets are guarded
    By United States Marines.

  220. Miroku says:

This reminds me. A friend of mine went to Afghanistan last year. Anyway, they found a scraggly kitten, and raised it back to health, and kept it around their compound. The kitten/cat was pretty good at catching locust, and a great moral booster. Last I heard about the cat it was in Virginia with a good home.

  221. Junebug says:

Awesome feel good story. Out of a country where war rages on, a little bit of light brings a smile on my face.

  222. X says:

After killing civilians, they save kittens….

    • Dianne Blair says:

You must be referring to the Taliban. They are the ones killing civilians. You should be grateful that we have young men willing to serve our nation by trying to rid the world of terrorism.

  223. dopyiii says:

Luvin’ kittehs… ur doin it rite.

  224. Spence says:

Awesome story. Also my cat’s name is Kiki as well and is the same color as that kitteh. But it’s about 15 pounds heavier.

  225. Benji says:

I know this sounds great, saving kittens during a war; however, another way of putting it is saving cats whilst killing people…

  226. Amy Joy says:

Hmm What? Why yes, yes I will marry you, right now. Gotta love a soft spot……….! X)

everything else…id say fail, but alas…it can’t even compete.

  230. Personage says:

In the end, life is made up of details. The little things you see and do add up to a massive mosaic, the entire content of your life, and it’s from that mosaic that the purpose of your existence begins to take shape. When you’re down in it, actually living it and making the day to day choices that make sense to you, it’s hard to see how it all adds up… where it’s going, what the end product will be.

My grandfather was stationed in Italy in WW2 and took into his care (along with his fellow soldiers) a group of small boys and a dog. We have pictures of them. If you asked him about the war, he would tell you about the boys, and the dog. And he would smile. There was very little else to smile about.

I don’t approve of war, and I don’t approve of this war in particular. But it’s not my place my judge. Expressing my opinion isn’t going to stop extremists from devising ways to kill themselves, their people, or us. Divisive politics are divisive. I’m sick of it.

I do approve of helping animals. I approve of small things, isolated moments, details, and stopping to smell the roses. These men have laid into their mosaic some truly beautiful things, independent of war and causes, politics and ideology. No one can predict what the whole picture will look like when it’s done.

What good have you done today?

  231. Kat says:

Both the kitties and the marines are adorable :-)

  232. blueprairie says:

After viewing the photos here (http://www.uniquescoop.com/2010/06/kitties-rescued-by-us-marine-soldiers.html) all I can say is their first sergeant must have a sense of humor…

  237. Laura says:

Thats how to end the war… give everyone a kitten!

    • I so agree! But the thing is…. u should never give anyone a free pet. My older sister told me that and she loves animals and knows alot about them. I would luv to have a free kitteh! :3 Those marines did the right thing…. Wun maor ting to support owr troops!!

    • Alan says:

WOW ! That’s the best answer to a war I have ever heard !

  238. Lady Whitewolf says:

Those guys are the REAL heros!

  239. The Marines and the Guard and all the troops over seas are doing their best to defend the defenseless and help nations become free. And that includes the defenseless animals, bless em, and making friends with the people, helping them build their nations again, and even helping (out of their own pockets) children get needed school supplies. No matter what your political beleifs, this part of war is one of the finest aspects. Not attacking, not destroying, but helping the innocent adults, children AND animals recover and be free. I have linked to the Nowzad site in my blog, and many of us link to animal rescue sites all over the world. Now that I said that, I’ll take a Marine, please. And a kitty.

  240. rebecca says:

omg! that is sooo sweet! wow, you guys are the greatest! thanks for your time in helping our country and also helping animals over there. It shows that there are still some good human beeings still left! every animal deserves a loving home. :)

  248. rustyfish says:

so, im stationed in afghanistan. it was a really hot day last month and im takin some trash to the dumpster. i throw it all in there and close the lid and then i hear a “mew!” sound. i look under the dumpster and see two little cats. they looked tired and dirty. so i grabbed my coffee pot and filled it with clean water for them. i set it infront of the dumpster and watched them drink it all.
so the next morning i hear the weirdest sound at around 3am outside my door. i grab my surefire and run out the door. as i do i feel claws going down my leg. and im screamin and cussing in the pain the two cats run away.
i think that they were humping outside my door, and as i ran out i steped on them.
i havent seen them since. :)

  257. LanceThruster says:

I am reminded of the scene from “The Victors” where Peter Fonda made the mistake of befriending the stray dog. I wonder how they’d rewrite the scene if the poor bedraggled critter was a kitten.

  262. Elgrit B. Russell says:

Men who give their heart to little kittens are men who would gladly give their hearts to people to. They are truly blessed and everyone should appreciate them. A word of advice, if you meet someone who doesn’t truly like or love animals, R U N. You will be sorry if you don’t even if you don’t know it at the time. Animals are like little angels and should be treated as such.

  263. Weresquirrel says:

Aww… mmyep, my heart just melted, and it’s dripping right out between my ribs.
Though it’s hard to combine my “cute kitteeeh” and my “hot mennnn” reflexes… >.> Technically I should be drooling as Pavlov’s dog right now.

  264. Morwalk says:

Not only are these great soldiers saving lives, both furry and human, they are also being good PR for the unjustly-maligned felines. I also want them to make it home safely. I wish I could wave a magic wand and bring them all home right now.

  265. Sharon says:

This has to be one of the very best things I have seen, EVER! As many have said most people don’t care, and shame on them, but for these guys to save a tiny life who did not ask to be there, these fellas are Angels!!!! May they blessed for ever and a day, it is MEN like this that make this world worth living in!

  266. Deb says:

you guys truly are heros in every sense of he word . Bless all of you!!

  273. Cool for Katz says:

Kittens and marines – a dream combination!

  274. Suzy says:

OMG!!!! Nothing more melts my heart more than gorg guys and kittens. I’m in a puddle on the floor with the combo!!!!

  275. Lesa says:

You guys are HEROES in so many ways!!!

  276. Lynnette R. Scurr says:

When these brave and sweet-hearted soldiers come home, what say you to have the kitties and their families meet them at the airport? They deserve a special thank you – does the military have a medal for “Service above and beyond the Call of Duty” for those who rescue these tiny defenceless creatures? If not, the governments should have one designed and cast!

  277. Katrina says:

You guys are amazing, keep up the awesome kitteh saving work!!! The organization CATPAWS give’s you two paws up for helping out the kitteh around the world :3

  278. Amber says:

  282. Georgia says:

It’s been a long time since I’ve felt proud of my country (sorry), but this might be enough to change my mind.
It is THE sweetest thing I’ve ever seen, and really sheds new light on some wonderful people who are overseas right now.

Guys, if y’all are reading this: how can we help? What do you need?

  283. fuvenusrs says:

I think that has got to be the cutest thing I’ve seen in my life. Big burly killing machines that are undone by a teeny ginger kitten. That’s adorable.

  284. Camille says:

Wow! You guys are amazing! Thank you for everything you do!

  285. Erin says:

Sounds like my Corps. Tough until a cute fluffy thing is around <3

  286. Ellen says:

Oh, so they can rescue kittens and at the same time have time to kill innocent people. Wow, such good work.

    • blueprairie says:

Ellen – Your grasp of the situation in Afghanistan hovers between “tenuous” and “nonexistent.”

  287. Ellen says:

Really? Because if you think that the soldiers in Afghanistan just saves kittens all day, it’s probably you that hot the wrong impression. America invaded Afghanistan because of the money, not to save kittens. The people you call heros are nothing but murderer. But I’m sure that Fox or other corrupted medias don’t say that, right?

  288. Ellen says:

Ohh, that sounded a bit too harsh. But I’m sure you get my point n_n

  289. blueprairie says:

I wouldn’t know, Ellen. I don’t watch Fox News. Unlike you, I prefer a more balanced approach to what’s happening over there.

(How old are you, anyway? Fourteen?)

  290. Ellen says:

    Fifteen, acutally.
And no, I don’t watch Fox, for pretty obvious reasons. An if you watch a neutral new, then you should know what America is doing in Afgahnistan. I think that people who share them on for saving kittens are a bit… distasteful. One or two kittens doesn’t make up for what they have done there.

  291. blueprairie says:

Just out of curiosity, how do you believe the US is making money out of Afghnistan?

No, never mind. This isn’t worth pursuing until you acquire a more mature viewpoint. Adios.

  292. Ellen says:

Political money. They get support from the americans, because the whole US are so damn patriotic that it makes me sick. Also, I hope you’re not that ignorant that you think that they don’t take resources from Afghanistan. And of course they got to try their new brand and oh so fun planes ;DDD

And sure, don’t discuss it. But you know I’m not lying when I’m saying that they are murderers. And if it was any other land than USA I’m sure they would be accused of violating the human rights. But no one ever criticize America, and because of that they think that they can do whatever the heck they want. A bit like Israel, actually.

  293. Ellen says:

Yeah, you’re kinda right. But let’s say that I was talking about a part (a very big part, if you ask me) of America. Not all. I know that not all americans are stupid and violent. I guess I judge a bit. So forget everything that I said about americans, but I’m gonna stick to the other things I said.
But I didn’t questioned that they saved a kitty, I questioned how people could think that they are heros because of that.

  294. JibbaJabba says:

    Ellen,

Grow up some. When you gain the ability to think for yourself, you might sound a little less ridiculous. You sound as ignorant as your counterparts spouting crap like “We should just kick those ragheads’ asses and show em who’s boss!”

You’re the idiot at YOUR edge of the spectrum. You appear to know very little concerning what you are speaking about. Here’s a clue: Mtv, your 15 year old friends, and The OC are not good sources of information.

Here’s an exercise for you: Name one person who murdered someone in Afghanistan. Give me an example. There are a couple, of that I’m certain, but can you name one? Next show me that it’s a big enough percentage to justify calling all of the Americans over there murderers. Next see if it was one of these guys who saved a kitten.

Better yet, since you’re a kid, imagine you Father was in the military and got sent to Afghanistan. Imagine he’s over there jsut trying to get through it without have to defend himself, or, God forbid, accidently harm someone innocent while bombs are blowing up and bullets are flying. Now imagine someone on here calling him a Murderer.

War sucks, but it happens. Very rarely is it just the Good Guys versus the Bad Guys.

  295. Ellen says:

My friends or MTV? God, you must be kidding me. No, that’s not what I get my sources. We read about the Afghan war in school, in a neutral perspective, and I’m far from the only one who thinks that it’s America’s fault. I’m a member of the Swedish left wing party, they and the green party and the social party all share the same opinion about Afghanistan.
And no, I can’t mention any name. But just recently Nato forces killed 52 civils in the Sangin area. It was mostly women and kids. Are they soldiers also heros?
No I can’t imagine that. But if I’m going to be crass, they joined the army, they’re the only one to blame. And still, they kill people. It doesn’t matter if they’re innocent or not, to kill another human being is the worst thing you can do.

And war just don’t “happen”. It’s war in the world because people, mostly from the western world, are greedy and thinks that they can take what ever they want.

Nothing more adorable than a tiny kitteh and a big ol’ marine!
