Presumably. the engineers put some thought into the design of the feet, with the video pointing out their flexibility. Is it a good idea to then thwart the engineers’ design for the sake of color matching?
If you know Noel (the surgeon) – Yes!
Kathy,
Please extend my heartiest congratulations to: Oscar, Noel and the rest of the team that pulled this off…or ON as the case maybe.
Cats are not the only “fashionistaz”!! Their colours have to be just so. Besides, Oscar didn’t seem to mind!!!
i am pretty certain that he did not put the tape on the new feet tightly enough to defeat the articulation of the new feet.
I think if the engineers thought about it, they could have made the feet black to begin with…and a little furry. All tech, no style.
Actually, they are prototypes. Even with human prosthetic when you first get your arm or leg, it looks like something out of Terminator but then they add the skin cover and color it. His actual feet are probably black and the probably will make them look more realistic. He just added the tape for the sake of making them the same color.
Oh! Lighten up!! The tape was applied around the join, not the joint. And if you are a truly inventive and innovative mechanical engineer, you’d always have duct tape on hand. Come on out of your stuffy box !!
liek teh doc said… hez nawt gonna put brown feet on a blak kitteh! Juss wouldnt be teh saem.
And kittehs saye dat teh hoomins arr eebul…
Awwwwwsome! Noel and Oscar just made my year!
Is this legit? That’s incredible :]
yes, very legit…not particularly economical yet, but very real! It has taken us a long time to get the implants right…the skin-implant interface (where they meet) has always been an issue.
This vet is fantastic. My cat Mac was run over and his pelvis imploded and Noel Fitzpatrick rebuilt him using the “bionic” pins and now Mac is a normal cat running around everywhere. Plus this vet actually cares about the animals and not about the cash he is getting
Concats Natalie *extends floofy paw ob frenship* ai haz a happy dat u still haz ur Max wif u !
Ai happee tu! Diz vet obveeuslee carez a lawt about deh kitteh.
*sniff* i lurvs dem hapey-endin storyz…
Oh dats so sweet!
You are blessed to live where this was possible. A vet who cares more about his patients than his bank account appears to be on the decline. I could see how moved he was at Oscar’s new mobility. I am so happy that your Mac was a recipient of his goodwill – and expertise. Wishing you and Mac a long and joyous life!
Props to the engineers and the Vets, that made my day right there. Such an adorable kitteh
This makes me cry! Love the kitteh, love the vets!
I admit it, I cried too. And I’m a 30 yo guy who doesn’t even own a cat. I love this site and I love what the vet did for Oscar! When the vet said “purrrfect” – priceless!!! Made my day.
I am just like you, and I feel the same way.
Yup, it sure made me cry, too. What a great story–fantastic vet and a wonderful sweet kitteh.
That was so cool and touching, it made me tear up too.
I felt emotional too, but its great this is possible. I mean how many animals get put to sleep in such a condition.
Incredible stuff, sweet kitteh.
How wonderful!
omg.. tear… yea oscar!!!!! btw, he doesn’t know he’s not ‘posed to jump… he’s only happy to walk…. *smiles*

I just want to send out a big THANK YOU SO VERRY MUCH! to everyone who made tis possible. It gives me a huge hope for humanities future to know that there are people out there that take the time to think of somthing like that and build something like that and are ready to actually put it at work. This may sound cheezy… but I really am happy to know this people exist… and I am even happier to see how well the Cat deals with it… I could just hug and kiss the whole world right now

Well said! This video confirms that there are people who do still care. Very nice change from what seems to have become the “normal”.
happy, happy, joy joy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you for posting this in English so we can understand you
I’m not altogether sold on lolspeak all the time, some of it for me is rather confusing.
{{{{{siobhan}}}}} !!!111!!! This video is the best thing I’ve seen on the internet in a loooong time! Made me cry, too! This vet is awesome! I have a “basement kitty” who looks just like Oscar, and if my kitty, Shadow, ever had a terrible accident like Oscar did, I would want Dr. Noel to fix him, too! Awesome job, Dr. Noel! {{{{{Dr. Noel}}}} I just love those little kitty feet – much better than dragging a wagon around! Now he can still jump and play!
Goe Oscar Goe!
teh noo feets maik hiz gait a bit odd, haop hee wont haz a trubble wif hiz hipz a kause ov it!
Wat a wunnerful storree!
i dun finks so coz iffn u watch da oder bideos ob him his walk goes bak 2 normal. oscar jus haz to get used to his new feets
i saw a news story about this. these feets are just a first try. they will watch oscar walk around and such and then change the design bit by bit.
yes. kittehs feets are in beta.
Really, still nice to see people care. Beta feet or not
Walk kitty, walk
It brought a wee bit of water to my eyes. Just a trickle down my cheek now… God bless the wee little black cat w/ the black tape feet. And God bless the kitty Dr. who made it all possible.
I second that!!! My vets over the years have gone above and beyond with my kittehs..now I have to find a place where I can have some again, then it’s ASPCA HERE I COME
Thirded! I had a cat when I was little, he was my buddy. Am thinking about getting one when I move out.
Should’ve built rocket boosters.
:]
Oscar’s full story made me cry. Read it here: http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/293858
Oscar may have used one (or more) of his nine lives, but the doctor and all the people at the kennel have made sure that the rest of his time on earth will be as normal as possible.
He is truly blessed to have a family that loves him enough to allow this to happen, and a doctor that has the knowledge to make it happen.
OMG .. tears flowing like Niagara Falls here … got to go hug my kitty now, so heartwarming to see people who care. Hugs to you all, Julie Andrea
*lee key eiz*

BTW: here’s the link to a story about this vet and this cat:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-1289281/Oscar-bionic-cat-pioneering-surgery-gave-TWO-false-legs.html
That’s awesome to see. I have a black cat that looks exactly like that at home and he’s missing a rear leg in the exact spot that little guy was.
It’s only one of his legs instead of two, but I’d love to get him one of those.
He was fitted with a new set of prosthesis and is walking pretty well..: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XmDqVN7vr8E
wow! the new feet work much better!
Thanks for the link! Glad they seem to have figured out that cats’ back paws are angled, it makes a huge difference. With the straight feet in the BBC video he definitely isn’t walking properly.
Omg, powr kitteh.
Hoeps hee gits betur sun adn uzd to hiz nu feets.
zomgz
<3 <3 <3 tanx 2 teh humanz ho maedz tis awesomez
WOW….not only to have successfully DONE this, but to be the owner who could AFFORD to have had it done.
I’m not callous, and would do anything (with in reason) for my pets, but if faced with the costs of this, I would have a really hard think before giving the go ahead.
That’s why any good mummy and daddy insure their kitteh so that when they need our help money doesn’t matter – the insurance man pays the bill
The insurers only paid the first four thousand pounds. It cost a lot more than that so Oscar was doubly lucky in getting a good vet and a Bank Manager as his human.
adn aifinkso dat da vets “donated” der time adn surjery cost fur da results.
Since this was experimental they probably didn’t have to pay. They were basically volunteering their cat as a research subject.
Oh, some guy above said they did pay… that’s kind of surprising.
da title is bionic kitteh, but i don see no lazers!
teh million dollah kitteh!!
This is an amazing story–and thank you, Natalie, for telling us about Noel Fitzpatrick’s work with your Mac. Apart from the brilliant medicine and technology–imagine the implications for helping people!–the love and care and dedication on the part of Noel and his staff go a long, long way to making me feel a little better about the human race generally…
My mum told me about this the other day – i was so upset when she started by telling me the cat had his legs chopped off by a combine harvister, but not so upset when i heard the happy ending! Seeing this video made me well up inside, and when the vet said at the end about Oscar being the best cat in the world i know exactly how he felt becuase i feel the same way about my own beautiful cat, Pepsi.
God bless the doc who cares so much about the kittehs!
YAY FOR DA KITTEH HIM HAS NEW FEETS!
*lolspeak off*
How beautiful! I cried like a 51-year-old baby!
What else can we say?
LOVE!!!!!
There is an updated video of him with newer prosthetic legs in its home environment, that Oscar seems to have a much easier time walking on. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XmDqVN7vr8E
I just watched teh vid of the new paws! What an extraordinary design! They look like teeny tiny little cat feets, and Oscar’s all walkin around like, “what’s the big deal?”! His gait looks completely normal. Wow!!!
OH NOES! Whit feetz on bluck kitteh? Thut’s fashion faux-paws!
>_>

We have the catknowligy!
how far science will go?
Oscar, YOU ARE THE MAN!!!, … I mean, YOU ARE THE KITTEH!!! Look out goggie, here comes Oscar!!!
This is amazing. He’s gonna need some more ergonomic feet eventually but it’s so nice to see him walk! This technology is amazing! They’re probably gearing up to use it on humans, now. This is simply lovely and heartwarming.
The last thing Noel says as he snuggles Oscar is what really did it for me:
“I can’t tell you how good it feels… to keep him alive.”
Bless him with every day a Caturday! :_)
O noes! Basement Cat iz bionical now!
you people are freaks. I mean I love cats and love this site, this story was awesome, but writing paragraph after paragraph of nonsensical ‘cat talk’ is insane. you need to get outside and get some fresh air.
We liek our stagne….stegnant…..stangnani….crappy airs.
Dat doktor is full ov awsum.
Oscar can haz nu lief? Aifinkso. : )
Iz otai. Come getting sum caek inna brakerume.
Or maybe you should let people do what makes them happy and not be so judgmental.
Some of us are agoraphobic with extreme light sensitivity. This is how we get social contact. If you don’t like it then why don’t YOU go outside and get some much vaunted fresh air and leave the rest of us to have fun in our own way?
Yes. That!
This is bringing tears of joy to my eyes..
No moar skratchiez on karpetz tho..
I want to marry that vet!
Me too! Dat vet iz teh purrfect man!
Dude, im thinkin Wheel attachment Rollercat FTW?

Okay, I am usually more of a dog person–but that kitty reminds me of a cat I had the privilege of loving for 17 years. Annnd…the vet is pretty hot, too!
It’s Cool what a vet can do to keep kettah to walk again. It’s AMAZING…I almost cried.
I guess you could say *takes off sunglasses* that this cat has two faux paws.
YEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Totally awesome, I teared up a bit. The love and kindness that people have for others is awesome. Maybe there is hope for mankind after all.
Blessed be, little kitteh…
Awww!!! The vet was literally crying with joy!
Does this mean kitteh haz “faux paws”?
Hai, Eberywun!!! Putz yer hanz togebr an’ gib does wunnerful peepl who maekd Oscar’s noo feetz an’ de doktr wut putted dem on him!!!
AND and grate hoomungous fank U to God!!
(peeplspeek nao)
Thank yous to all involved with Oscar, the bionic cat!!!
I cried while watching this. This is amazing!
Who on Earth voted this down? I mean, you can’t even troll with a vote because nobody knows you did it, that’s pretty lame.
I don’t agree with surgery personally, but I’m not gonna speak out against anyone else’s (human or feline) right to that option. Even if you don’t agree with it, it’s done now, why not just be happy for the cat and the new opportunity to walk which many other cats would not have in such a situation?
i cried a bit…
OMG, You guy’s Rock and are True Hero’s!
I love Cat’s and they live to be free, just talk to one.
When this was shown on tv about a week ago, I cried like a baby. Poor Oscar losing his feet in the combine harvester, then trying to crawl his way home dragging two bleeding stumps behind him just made me sob. He seemed just the calmest cat, and he certainly wasn’t going to let the fact he had no back feet slow him down. I wasn’t sure if new feet would be the best thing for the cat, but seeing him get around on them was magical. And the big sloppy kiss that the vet gave him, the unconditional love on a cat that wasn’t even his, was so cool. He always clearly states if it isn’t in the animal’s best interests that he won’t do it, and although the work is pricey, I don’t think it even comes close to the amount of care, state-of-the-art treatments etc that is given to those poor little animals. Without this guy (and his team)’s work, these animals would have had no hope. I think Oscar’s owner said on the programme that the insurer’s were paying £4,000 and he was happy to pay the rest. What price can you put on Oscar being back on four legs and returning to his life laying around catching some rays?
The real point is: an amputated humanz would have needed months of rehab to get used to the prosthesis + psychological support … while Oscar is even trying to jump… the first time he’s on his new feet!!!
I remember my goggie coming from the animal hospital after a big heart surgery… the day after, he was trying to get rid of the bandage and bringing his toy to play throw-fetch…
Animals are awesome.
Thumbs up for Oscar, thumbs up for the vet, thumbs up for Oscar’s owners. Their behavior should not be the exemption but the rule!
my got die arme katze
I loooooove that man! The love and compassion he shows towards the animals he cares for is amazing!!
I for one welcome our new bionic kitteh overlords. This is pure win and so heartwarming.
This works on two levels -
1. Oscar is the most beautiful cat and looks exactly like my own beloved black cat Siren.
2. Dr Noel is absolutely GORGEOUS and has the most sexy voice!
can someone tel me, what happend to him, that this was necessary?
Kitteh got chopped up by a combine harvester, so yes, this was necessary.
Saw this a few weeks ago already, so happy to see it again. Doc going all teary-eyed when he sees Oscar is trying to jump first time – absolute bliss. And the new feet are even better.
<3!
My brother’s girlfriend works at that place (although she wasn’t present at the time of that filming) and she says that Oscar is indeed a sweetie and one of the nicest kitties you could hope to meet. Even Noel was surprised apparently…
Amazing! This poor cat would have been put to sleep or suffered dragging himself around for the rest of his life!
Despite the costs, it’s so worth it to know that there is medical technology now that can do this!
Pook kitteh, what happened to him?…
A very touching moment to see him walk and climb. And the doctor’s speech… Live long, bionic-kitteh!
Dis kitteh haz teh faux pawz.
Awwww…happy tears
This video made me cry… its really great that there are people like this in the world. Not like others who would say, “oh its just best to put him to sleep…”
Agreed, 100% (including the crying part
).
A touching story and all that, but honestly couldn’t they have used something that didn’t look like two corks for feet? Why not something wider with pads? Have we suddenly fallen to giving “biotic” animals rubber peglegs?
And, now that I see the rest of the video, why is there so little grip? The cat slides around with each step. They honestly remind me of duct-taped corks.
The original feet have been replaced (there’s a link to a video in one of the comments above). I think the new ones look more like a cat’s feet – narrower and slanted a bit to the front. And Oscar seems to be moving pretty well on them.
This is brand new technology. The first try wasn’t bad – Oscar was doing pretty well, considering this video is a record of his first time walking on them. But there’s always room for improvement. Maybe they had to see how he did on them before they knew whether they would work.
I think this is from a series of programs the BBC did called “The Bionic Vet” (or something like that). Can anybody from the UK confirm? I would like to see more, but am limited to the internet (I don’t have a TV) and can’t watch BBC stuff unless it’s on BBC America. An initial search on YouTube didn’t turn up much.
Yes, it is called ‘The Bionic Vet’ and is currently being shown on BBC1 on a Wednesday evening.
Aww, I love these sappy animal stories!
My God. I have tears in my eyes!
Hurray for modern medicine!!!! ~sniff~
That is amazing…
This is giving me hope for all the cat owners in the future who may be able to save their cats with this technology.
Go technology and science!
Epic Win … for science and the cat.
It seems like a success story, and it is, but the prosthetic feet are too high. They should have half it’s present height.
we can rebuild him
We are now one step closer to Auto-Mail, >.> Full-Metal Al-Cat-mist ftw
<.< lol amirite?
But…Cats’ back feet are long! Those are short and stubby!
here’s an update from him. new feet!
Oh, that’s wonderful. Oscar’s so well-adjusted to new feet. His tail still shows signs of his horrible injury, but he’s holding it high now and walking tall, and his front leg seems fully healed.
It makes me feel good to know that there is Drs and humans out there taking care of our little furry friends
WOOHOO!! Smoochies to kitteh & doc!!!!
Awww! I cried.
How marvelous.
TRULY EPIC WIN. Astounding veterinary work.
This is an awesome story. But really… all that lametarded kitty talk everyone does is annoying. A cat wouldnt talk like that.
“Surgical high-five!”
Scrubs reference?
Now we must outfit him with weaponry, hydralic shock absorbers, and a cheezburger grill and then he will be battle ready.
aaaaaaaaawwww!! I want one!!!
That is awesome, brought tears to my eyes.
I can Haz FEETZ!!
this is beautiful, it made me cry with tears of joy
Oscar and his doctors all deserved international recognition for the tremendous good they have done for animals and people alike. Thank you! Oscar is my hero.
Wow! Our shelter just took in a kitteh with only one intact paw left after a run in with a radiator fan. This would be great for her.
This made me cry happy tears
theze feetz r gud!
“Surgical Hi-5!”
wow, that is hert wurmin! i wander how he lost them?
I was awestruck when I saw this, and then actually cried when he began going “I am bionic kitteh! I shall not be denied!” and tackled their flimsy “blockades”.
We should all hope to have such a ferocious will to live. And possibly dominate a 6 pack of papertowels.
HUZZAH FOR SCIENCE!!!!
That is truly amazing! It astounds me that there are still people out there that care so much!
What a moving video. lots of happy tears for the kitty
like like like like like!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! <3 Oscar!!!!!
Aw.. Thats so.. SWEET! “thans doc for letting me hav a 2nd chance to walk!!” :’) almost makes me cry..
This wouldn’t be ground breaking science without duct tape!
love how the doctor used black duct tape to match the colour lol!!
but we do have the techology, we can rebuild him, not sure it was a wise choice to do basement cat though :-O
i cried i so happy! is so cuteses!! i so happy for he!!
see, thats cuz teh british arh grrrrrrrrrrrr8
like tony the tiger

I cried!!! I am such a girl.
I’m glad to know I’m not the only one who teared up. I just adopted two little kittens yesterday and just, I dunno… I guess I’m emotional. xD

I wanna know if the cat had it’s legs removed for the operation or if it was an accident…cause it wouldn’t be the first time people do that
An accident farming. You’ll notice the scarring – it was a harvester or something, I think…..

The only reason this is not in lolspeak is I have not developed the ability write in that language.
I admire those who can do it and I love to read it.
Go Oscar!! This is such a cool kitty. Blessings to Oscar and the doctors and staff that helped Oscar live a happier, more fulfilled life. Now he can spend the rest of his eight lives just like nothing ever happened… xoxo
Lolcat doctor: I’s cant bear teh site of teh kitteh wit no legs! I no! I mak Robokitteh! I has teh technologies! Human doctor: Did that cat just do a monolouge? In broken english? I trust cats like that. Make the robokitteh then. Lolcat doctor: Hoorais!
ALL I could do while watching this was cry. What a kind, loving doctor! You could HEAR the love in his voice when he talked about the kitty boy… it was so there… it made me so happy to hear it. I would love to work for souch a person. I would volunteer to work for free for such a person. Gives you hope that there are some decent people left in this world.
OMG I cried when I saw the pic then bubbled even more when I watched the video, esp when Dr Noel was almost crying too! So much respect for all the people involved in helping Oscar, I can’t imagine how happy his owners must be feeling x
That kitteh’s doctor’s and the designers of new ‘footz’ all deserve a round of applause. They gived kitteh more walks, explores, jumps, runs, kitteh is very happy, happy, happy!
We can rebuild him… Stronger and faster than ever before! Muhahahaha!
Soon the cyborg cats will take over the world!
This is so amazing! I’m not typically a crier, but needless to say, this definitely broke that. To those wonderful doctors: Thank you so much for caring so much about that beautiful kitty and for making him able to walk again!
I always cherish this story, as it reminds me of a cat I had.
In 2002, my cat Yato had a pretty bad accident when the microwave oven’s rotating dish fell on his left right paw. I heard the crash and ran to see what happened, but he wasn’t there. Mom saw he darted under her bed and we took him to the hospital. The vets there (JERKS!) said they could down Yato or try and give him surgery – my mother refused to have him killed. So the doctors tried to place a surgical nail in his fractured toe, but the bones were too shattered to be restored. So he had his toe amputated. He was also the only cat there, so I went after school to visit him and give him his favorite food: Ham.
For a time he had a limp, but later he learned to walk normally again. However, he died in 2005 from a fall. But I still remember that cranky, jealous mog. Needless to say, I still love him.
This is absolutely amazing. I can not immagen what those doctors where feeling after they finaly accomplished such a thing.
awsum doc b blessed by teh ceiling cat!
