    • catena says:

      • gammacat says:

*sends in robot wif tray of sordid noms and drinks*
        enjoi!

        • bamahern says:

Presumably. the engineers put some thought into the design of the feet, with the video pointing out their flexibility. Is it a good idea to then thwart the engineers’ design for the sake of color matching?

          • Kathy says:

If you know Noel (the surgeon) – Yes! :)

            • George Roberts, Jr says:

              Kathy,

Please extend my heartiest congratulations to: Oscar, Noel and the rest of the team that pulled this off…or ON as the case maybe.

          • Lynnette R. Scurr says:

Cats are not the only “fashionistaz”!! Their colours have to be just so. Besides, Oscar didn’t seem to mind!!!

          • rexifelis says:

i am pretty certain that he did not put the tape on the new feet tightly enough to defeat the articulation of the new feet.

          • Lolly thomas says:

I think if the engineers thought about it, they could have made the feet black to begin with…and a little furry. All tech, no style.

            • Bojangles says:

Actually, they are prototypes. Even with human prosthetic when you first get your arm or leg, it looks like something out of Terminator but then they add the skin cover and color it. His actual feet are probably black and the probably will make them look more realistic. He just added the tape for the sake of making them the same color.

          • biro says:

Oh! Lighten up!! The tape was applied around the join, not the joint. And if you are a truly inventive and innovative mechanical engineer, you’d always have duct tape on hand. Come on out of your stuffy box !!

          • Koolkiwi says:

liek teh doc said… hez nawt gonna put brown feet on a blak kitteh! Juss wouldnt be teh saem.

    • Elaine says:

And kittehs saye dat teh hoomins arr eebul…

    • Peg says:

Awwwwwsome! Noel and Oscar just made my year!

  2. anjiea says:

Is this legit? That’s incredible :]

    • Kathy says:

yes, very legit…not particularly economical yet, but very real! It has taken us a long time to get the implants right…the skin-implant interface (where they meet) has always been an issue.

  3. Natalie says:

This vet is fantastic. My cat Mac was run over and his pelvis imploded and Noel Fitzpatrick rebuilt him using the “bionic” pins and now Mac is a normal cat running around everywhere. Plus this vet actually cares about the animals and not about the cash he is getting

  4. Smalls says:

This makes me cry! Love the kitteh, love the vets!

    • Jeff says:

I admit it, I cried too. And I’m a 30 yo guy who doesn’t even own a cat. I love this site and I love what the vet did for Oscar! When the vet said “purrrfect” – priceless!!! Made my day.

    • Stefan says:

I felt emotional too, but its great this is possible. I mean how many animals get put to sleep in such a condition.
      Incredible stuff, sweet kitteh.

  5. damemarie says:

    How wonderful!

  6. heather says:

omg.. tear… yea oscar!!!!! btw, he doesn’t know he’s not ‘posed to jump… he’s only happy to walk…. *smiles*

  7. cweenmj says:

Wii kin making him better….. faster…..
Oh, I see gammacat b deh faster.

    *lolspeek awf*

I just want to send out a big THANK YOU SO VERRY MUCH! to everyone who made tis possible. It gives me a huge hope for humanities future to know that there are people out there that take the time to think of somthing like that and build something like that and are ready to actually put it at work. This may sound cheezy… but I really am happy to know this people exist… and I am even happier to see how well the Cat deals with it… I could just hug and kiss the whole world right now :)

    • gammacat says:

    • mamacat_4 says:

      happy, happy, joy joy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • stephanie says:

Thank you for posting this in English so we can understand you :)

I’m not altogether sold on lolspeak all the time, some of it for me is rather confusing. :)

    • Meesh says:

{{{{{siobhan}}}}} !!!111!!! This video is the best thing I’ve seen on the internet in a loooong time! Made me cry, too! This vet is awesome! I have a “basement kitty” who looks just like Oscar, and if my kitty, Shadow, ever had a terrible accident like Oscar did, I would want Dr. Noel to fix him, too! Awesome job, Dr. Noel! {{{{{Dr. Noel}}}} I just love those little kitty feet – much better than dragging a wagon around! Now he can still jump and play!

    • bluesfan473 says:

teh noo feets maik hiz gait a bit odd, haop hee wont haz a trubble wif hiz hipz a kause ov it!

yes. kittehs feets are in beta.

  21. Ollie's Mum says:

It brought a wee bit of water to my eyes. Just a trickle down my cheek now… God bless the wee little black cat w/ the black tape feet. And God bless the kitty Dr. who made it all possible.

    • rneyal says:

I second that!!! My vets over the years have gone above and beyond with my kittehs..now I have to find a place where I can have some again, then it’s ASPCA HERE I COME

      • Somerandomperson says:

Thirded! I had a cat when I was little, he was my buddy. Am thinking about getting one when I move out.

  22. Kitty McScratchalot says:

    Should’ve built rocket boosters.

    :]

  23. EternalFlame says:

Oscar’s full story made me cry. Read it here: http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/293858

    • iheartlolz says:

Oscar may have used one (or more) of his nine lives, but the doctor and all the people at the kennel have made sure that the rest of his time on earth will be as normal as possible.

He is truly blessed to have a family that loves him enough to allow this to happen, and a doctor that has the knowledge to make it happen.

    • SundaysChild says:

OMG .. tears flowing like Niagara Falls here … got to go hug my kitty now, so heartwarming to see people who care. Hugs to you all, Julie Andrea

  24. veleslavushka says:

  30. Cygnia says:

    Scienze IZ wudderful! :-D

  31. J says:

That’s awesome to see. I have a black cat that looks exactly like that at home and he’s missing a rear leg in the exact spot that little guy was.
It’s only one of his legs instead of two, but I’d love to get him one of those.

  32. NinjahKitteh says:

He was fitted with a new set of prosthesis and is walking pretty well..: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XmDqVN7vr8E

    • adam says:

wow! the new feet work much better!

    • H says:

Thanks for the link! Glad they seem to have figured out that cats’ back paws are angled, it makes a huge difference. With the straight feet in the BBC video he definitely isn’t walking properly.

  33. Omg, powr kitteh.
Hoeps hee gits betur sun adn uzd to hiz nu feets.

  34. trenchkitten says:

    zomgz
<3 <3 <3 tanx 2 teh humanz ho maedz tis awesomez

  35. Exit Academy says:

WOW….not only to have successfully DONE this, but to be the owner who could AFFORD to have had it done.

I’m not callous, and would do anything (with in reason) for my pets, but if faced with the costs of this, I would have a really hard think before giving the go ahead.

    • Natalie says:

That’s why any good mummy and daddy insure their kitteh so that when they need our help money doesn’t matter – the insurance man pays the bill :-)

      • Muchsake says:

The insurers only paid the first four thousand pounds. It cost a lot more than that so Oscar was doubly lucky in getting a good vet and a Bank Manager as his human.

      • OnleeKitteh says:

adn aifinkso dat da vets “donated” der time adn surjery cost fur da results.

    • H says:

Since this was experimental they probably didn’t have to pay. They were basically volunteering their cat as a research subject.

  36. Steven says:

da title is bionic kitteh, but i don see no lazers! :(

  37. teh million dollah kitteh!!

  38. Britty says:

This is an amazing story–and thank you, Natalie, for telling us about Noel Fitzpatrick’s work with your Mac. Apart from the brilliant medicine and technology–imagine the implications for helping people!–the love and care and dedication on the part of Noel and his staff go a long, long way to making me feel a little better about the human race generally…

  39. Hezoid says:

My mum told me about this the other day – i was so upset when she started by telling me the cat had his legs chopped off by a combine harvister, but not so upset when i heard the happy ending! Seeing this video made me well up inside, and when the vet said at the end about Oscar being the best cat in the world i know exactly how he felt becuase i feel the same way about my own beautiful cat, Pepsi.

  40. acpw says:

God bless the doc who cares so much about the kittehs!

  41. Kyosgurl says:

YAY FOR DA KITTEH HIM HAS NEW FEETS!

  42. pastyguy says:

    *lolspeak off*
How beautiful! I cried like a 51-year-old baby!
    What else can we say?
    LOVE!!!!!

  43. Phoenix301 says:

There is an updated video of him with newer prosthetic legs in its home environment, that Oscar seems to have a much easier time walking on. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XmDqVN7vr8E

    • LuvBJones says:

I just watched teh vid of the new paws! What an extraordinary design! They look like teeny tiny little cat feets, and Oscar’s all walkin around like, “what’s the big deal?”! His gait looks completely normal. Wow!!!

    • Zutto says:

OH NOES! Whit feetz on bluck kitteh? Thut’s fashion faux-paws!

  51. Aaron says:

Oscar, YOU ARE THE MAN!!!, … I mean, YOU ARE THE KITTEH!!! Look out goggie, here comes Oscar!!!

  52. Emily says:

This is amazing. He’s gonna need some more ergonomic feet eventually but it’s so nice to see him walk! This technology is amazing! They’re probably gearing up to use it on humans, now. This is simply lovely and heartwarming.

  53. nadinucca says:

The last thing Noel says as he snuggles Oscar is what really did it for me:
“I can’t tell you how good it feels… to keep him alive.”

Bless him with every day a Caturday! :_)

  54. Ken says:

O noes! Basement Cat iz bionical now!

  55. FreshAirFund says:

you people are freaks. I mean I love cats and love this site, this story was awesome, but writing paragraph after paragraph of nonsensical ‘cat talk’ is insane. you need to get outside and get some fresh air.

  56. Baby Sparkle says:

This is bringing tears of joy to my eyes..

  67. jooliep says:

Okay, I am usually more of a dog person–but that kitty reminds me of a cat I had the privilege of loving for 17 years. Annnd…the vet is pretty hot, too!

  68. Kathy Worsey says:

It’s Cool what a vet can do to keep kettah to walk again. It’s AMAZING…I almost cried.

  69. Punny says:

I guess you could say *takes off sunglasses* that this cat has two faux paws.

    YEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

  70. Jaymezz says:

Totally awesome, I teared up a bit. The love and kindness that people have for others is awesome. Maybe there is hope for mankind after all.

  71. Magic_Rat says:

    Blessed be, little kitteh…

  72. Tadakiba says:

Awww!!! The vet was literally crying with joy!

  73. Squiffy says:

  74. Lynnette R. Scurr says:

Thank yous to all involved with Oscar, the bionic cat!!!

  75. Kiki says:

I cried while watching this. This is amazing!

  76. ... says:

Who on Earth voted this down? I mean, you can’t even troll with a vote because nobody knows you did it, that’s pretty lame.

I don’t agree with surgery personally, but I’m not gonna speak out against anyone else’s (human or feline) right to that option. Even if you don’t agree with it, it’s done now, why not just be happy for the cat and the new opportunity to walk which many other cats would not have in such a situation?

  77. jk says:

    i cried a bit…

  78. Carlgru says:

OMG, You guy’s Rock and are True Hero’s!
I love Cat’s and they live to be free, just talk to one.

  79. madcatwoman says:

When this was shown on tv about a week ago, I cried like a baby. Poor Oscar losing his feet in the combine harvester, then trying to crawl his way home dragging two bleeding stumps behind him just made me sob. He seemed just the calmest cat, and he certainly wasn’t going to let the fact he had no back feet slow him down. I wasn’t sure if new feet would be the best thing for the cat, but seeing him get around on them was magical. And the big sloppy kiss that the vet gave him, the unconditional love on a cat that wasn’t even his, was so cool. He always clearly states if it isn’t in the animal’s best interests that he won’t do it, and although the work is pricey, I don’t think it even comes close to the amount of care, state-of-the-art treatments etc that is given to those poor little animals. Without this guy (and his team)’s work, these animals would have had no hope. I think Oscar’s owner said on the programme that the insurer’s were paying £4,000 and he was happy to pay the rest. What price can you put on Oscar being back on four legs and returning to his life laying around catching some rays?

  80. Cheshire Cat says:

The real point is: an amputated humanz would have needed months of rehab to get used to the prosthesis + psychological support … while Oscar is even trying to jump… the first time he’s on his new feet!!!

I remember my goggie coming from the animal hospital after a big heart surgery… the day after, he was trying to get rid of the bandage and bringing his toy to play throw-fetch…

    Animals are awesome.

Thumbs up for Oscar, thumbs up for the vet, thumbs up for Oscar’s owners. Their behavior should not be the exemption but the rule!

  81. anke990 says:

    my got die arme katze

  82. Geraldine says:

I loooooove that man! The love and compassion he shows towards the animals he cares for is amazing!!

  83. Ch3 says:

I for one welcome our new bionic kitteh overlords. This is pure win and so heartwarming.

  84. Cool for Katz says:

This works on two levels -
    1. Oscar is the most beautiful cat and looks exactly like my own beloved black cat Siren.
    2. Dr Noel is absolutely GORGEOUS and has the most sexy voice!

  85. jojoba says:

can someone tel me, what happend to him, that this was necessary?

    • Compulsorry says:

Kitteh got chopped up by a combine harvester, so yes, this was necessary.

Saw this a few weeks ago already, so happy to see it again. Doc going all teary-eyed when he sees Oscar is trying to jump first time – absolute bliss. And the new feet are even better.

      <3!

  86. Mayhem says:

My brother’s girlfriend works at that place (although she wasn’t present at the time of that filming) and she says that Oscar is indeed a sweetie and one of the nicest kitties you could hope to meet. Even Noel was surprised apparently…

  87. Irene says:

Amazing! This poor cat would have been put to sleep or suffered dragging himself around for the rest of his life!

Despite the costs, it’s so worth it to know that there is medical technology now that can do this!

  88. Squall85 says:

Pook kitteh, what happened to him?… :( A very touching moment to see him walk and climb. And the doctor’s speech… Live long, bionic-kitteh!

  89. WinklesTheHamster says:

Dis kitteh haz teh faux pawz.

  90. daisy says:

    Awwww…happy tears

  91. Ashley says:

This video made me cry… its really great that there are people like this in the world. Not like others who would say, “oh its just best to put him to sleep…”

  92. Timmeh says:

A touching story and all that, but honestly couldn’t they have used something that didn’t look like two corks for feet? Why not something wider with pads? Have we suddenly fallen to giving “biotic” animals rubber peglegs?

    • Timmeh says:

And, now that I see the rest of the video, why is there so little grip? The cat slides around with each step. They honestly remind me of duct-taped corks.

      • Maggie says:

The original feet have been replaced (there’s a link to a video in one of the comments above). I think the new ones look more like a cat’s feet – narrower and slanted a bit to the front. And Oscar seems to be moving pretty well on them.

This is brand new technology. The first try wasn’t bad – Oscar was doing pretty well, considering this video is a record of his first time walking on them. But there’s always room for improvement. Maybe they had to see how he did on them before they knew whether they would work.

  93. Maggie says:

I think this is from a series of programs the BBC did called “The Bionic Vet” (or something like that). Can anybody from the UK confirm? I would like to see more, but am limited to the internet (I don’t have a TV) and can’t watch BBC stuff unless it’s on BBC America. An initial search on YouTube didn’t turn up much.

    • Cool for Katz says:

Epic Win … for science and the cat.

  99. Excellent says:

  171. Sakee says:

I always cherish this story, as it reminds me of a cat I had.

In 2002, my cat Yato had a pretty bad accident when the microwave oven’s rotating dish fell on his left right paw. I heard the crash and ran to see what happened, but he wasn’t there. Mom saw he darted under her bed and we took him to the hospital. The vets there (JERKS!) said they could down Yato or try and give him surgery – my mother refused to have him killed. So the doctors tried to place a surgical nail in his fractured toe, but the bones were too shattered to be restored. So he had his toe amputated. He was also the only cat there, so I went after school to visit him and give him his favorite food: Ham.

For a time he had a limp, but later he learned to walk normally again. However, he died in 2005 from a fall. But I still remember that cranky, jealous mog. Needless to say, I still love him.

  172. Tasmena says:

This is absolutely amazing. I can not immagen what those doctors where feeling after they finaly accomplished such a thing.

  173. awsum doc b blessed by teh ceiling cat!
