This puts me in mind of the wars my father had with the local grey squirrels on Cape Cod over the sunflower supplies. Ultimately we had (we thought) the ultimate solution–a perch-style feeder that closes up when too much weight is on the perch.

Well, it was the ultimate solution for the grey squirrels, at least.

However, a red squirrel managed to slip in through the gap at the TOP (where the main portion of the feeder is hanging on the lid component). That was ultimately stopped up with a block of wood.

The chipmunk, however, my father was not willing to interdict because it EARNED its keep. What it did was stretch itself between the perch and a nearby twig (the birds want cover, thank you…), spreading its weight to the point that the perch did NOT shut, and it could easily fill its cheeks with seeds. Really, it was holding on to the twig with ONE FOOT, if I remember correctly.

If this one is anything like the ones here, it can get out, easily.
