I luvz the sand cats and fishing cats but if they hang out at the “cat house” I am probably better off not having gone to one. I might have ended up with cat scratch fever (among other things).

Y’know, I love cats more than almost anyone in the world, so I’m not happy seeing the fishing cat picture, much less going googoo gaagaa over it. Why is an endangered wild animal in a bath in a house?
LOLcatspeak aside: This may not be a bath in a house. This could be a pic from the back room of that zoo – Cincinnati Zoo? – where kittehs play on a regular basis.
It could be this is a house and a cat that was injured young and couldn’t be reintroduced to the wild.
It could be one that’s mother died, was rejected by other cats and so had to be raised by hand by people.
It could be many things that happened that this cat was playing in a tub.
It IS terribly squee! though, and it introduced me to a kind of cat I’d never heard of or seen before.
No, it’s definitely in a house. If you go to the family’s website – johndevis.com, and poke around the links a bit, you can see more pics. The site’s all in Russian, but the cats have been with this family since infancy, and always lived in the home. There are pics of them growing up over the years, and other “tub” pics, you can see it’s the same tub. That’s what fishing cats do, after all, they… fish. In the other pics, there’s one where one of them is fishing for its dinner, which is, no joke – catfish. Ha! I’m not sure the owners realize the irony, as English is not their native language.
This little dude is one of a pair of twins, both very beautiful, and they have at least one adopted sibling who is not a fishing cat.
We had a lot of discussion about this back when someone first found the site and posted the pics on Fark. IIRC, and it was a while ago so my memory may not be accurate, someone who spoke Russian did contact the site’s owners, and they are Russian emigrants who are either breeders or trainers of these cats and brought two of them to the U.S. when they emigrated. Apparently, they engineer their entire lives around the needs of the cats. At one time, there were a lot more pictures on the site, and you could see it more clearly, the house was very much adapted with the comfort of the cats being more of a priority than the needs of the humans. They (the owners/handlers) are also very knowledgeable and passionate about the breed, and brought them live fish to “hunt” and “stalk” for food and so on. You can see from the condition of the cats (more pics on the site) that their coats are sleek and gorgeous, and they’re healthy and robust.
They also have at least one or two other cats in the house to balance things out.
Clearly this is not a situation that is appropriate for everyone but apparently this particular family has hand-raised these two kittehs from infancy (there are pictures of them from babyhood playing with their rubber duckies), and it’s clear from the sequence of photos over the years from kittenhood through their current adulthood that the cats are thriving and healthy and doted upon in this very specific and highly unusual household. I’m thinking perhaps this was a circumstance where the infants were orphaned and bottle-raised by humans and that’s how they ended up in a domesticated situation.
The site has a lot of links with what seems to be a great deal of information about various species of wild cats in Russia, judging by the photos. Unfortunately, since I can’t read Russian, I don’t know for sure. But while I would never advocate keeping this species as a housepet, I don’t doubt that this specific family are competent, devoted and responsible caretakers of their animals, albeit in a highly unorthodox situation.
