OT Cheezpeeps I needs advice
I don’t know if any of you remembers the incident last October when Yogi kitteh bited me, after our neighbor’s cat came into the house.
The neigbhor kitteh freaked both my kittehs and Yogi started attacking Injeh kitteh, I got between the two of the them and got bitten.
Well similar incident took place yesterday, this time there was no other kitteh, Yogi only saw his reflection, but he had been acting strange all afternoon, I think he could smell something, he attacked Injeh, this time hubcat got between them to break up the fight and got badly scratched. My cats have been together for 6 years without any incident and get along pretty well otherwise.
I am working from home today and keeping the kittehs in separate rooms. I don’t know what’s going to happen when they see each other.

sorree to heer yowr bad luck. iffen it helps my hooman haz had very difficult time wit jobs too. he also writes the screenplays and is tring to get n agent although ai tells him they don’t has kitteh in them so how can they be great storee?! Behind every great storee is a great kitteh. Afinkso.
Anyways he has had good jobs previously but den over year of scrambling for work. He advertized himself as overqualified temp and got sum wurks – one he hated but the temp wurk he has now he likes but don pay too good. he get depressed too but too stubborn to gives up. he sez the trick is to always keeps the momentum gowing wit job search etc. and don forget to feed the kittehs (last bit wuz my advice).

Okay, technical term for this is “displacement aggression.” I got my hand ripped up quite badly some time ago by one of mine when we were in a basement apartment and he was in a window and a tom came by. What happened the first time is that Yogi couldn’t reach the neighbour’s kitty but his aggression got all stirred up, so he took it out on the closest target — Injeh.
This second time… hm. I’m wondering if Yogi smells a tom spraying nearby or a female in heat, to get him worked up like that. It really sounds like displacement again to me — he was probably getting scents, then his reflection triggered him.
First: do NOT get in the middle of a cat fight ever. Use a big thick towel or blanket — break line of sight if you can, drop it over one or both and remove to another room. If that doesn’t do it, dump a cup of water over them — won’t hurt them, will generally make both jump back and you can resume the towel or blanket manoeuvre. If you get a nasty deep hole, whether bite or scratch, lay a quarter on it and draw a line around it. If redness, swelling, heat, etc go outside that, get to a doctor NOW.
Second: this doesn’t mean that Yogi hates Injeh. More likely, something is stressing him out. Feliway comes to mind as a way to help cover any foreign kitty scents and help him relax and feel safe — synthetic version of the pheromone in their cheek glands.
Give me a minute to keep pondering, not done yet….

After the first incident Inji was afraid him and would growl and hiss
when he attempted to as much as get near her.
Also yesterday and the other incident, the attack on Inji was so quick and ferocious that at that time I felt that Yogi would have killed her if he got to her.
Yeah, redirected aggression is scary. It’s completely uncontrolled, driven completely by adrenalin and instinct spiking and no appropriate outlet for it. The cat I mentioned that ripped my hand up, he never hurt me before or after. Never assume that a cat acting like that will recognize you and moderate its attack, even if it loves you and trusts you — I’d even use caution with my Cory-Bear if I saw that. I’m glad Inji’s okay.

It probably would be a good idea to keep them separated for a bit, and do a gradual, supervised reintroduction over a few days — if possible, have one or both on harness and leash so you can keep some control, but if not, at least have blanket/towel ready. Watch very closely for the body language — Yogi gets treats if he’s NOT behaving aggressively, Injeh-kitty gets treats if she doesn’t act scared.
Ultimately, redirected aggression doesn’t happen if the stimulus isn’t there, but if it’s a cat outside, that’s going to be rather tough to stop. If it’s a female in heat, he might be fine once she’s out of it, but start again when she goes back into heat — and it’s getting into that time of year. If it’s a tom, maybe keep an eye out outside and try to discourage him from hanging around too close — water gun, loud noise.
Inji’s important in this too, because if she acts intimidated, she could essentially invite him to beat on her. Do Not Want for that to become a habit! If she acts scared around him, separate them, and give her lots of encouragement when she’s around him without acting submissive.

another good thing to spray outside is Nature’s Miracle (can get in PetSmart). I got a big bottle a whiles back and put some in an individual spray bottle. When I see neighborhood kittehs walking thru the back yard, I sometimes go out and spray around the patio door and window sills. That seems to help keep my indoor kitteh from going into the red zone and attacking the window then me.

actually it’s for getting rid of urine smell & spots on carpets/floors.
Hmm… anything that removes or even reduces the scent of cats outside could be a very useful thing indeedy, and something that’s designed to get rid of kitty smells would be effective, for that. *files this idea for future use*
Feliway is a big help indoors. I have a diffuser (like a Glad plug-in) that seems to have been helping my cats. They were fine with our move last year, and they are more relaxed, especially around guests.

I use a vinegar & water solution (1:4) to neutralize urine odors. I wonder if it would also be effective for this. I like it because it’s eco-friendly and cheap!
