Here’s the story of the photo (sorry about the lack of lolspeak):
In the summer of 2008, Iowa had major flooding. This left many being evacuated from their homes, most on very short notice. The photo was taken by Des Moines Register photographer Harry Baumert, rescuing his fiance’s cats Bender and Fry.
The first caption for this photo really does tell the story well: “Tru Heeros not alwayz ware costooms”.
Sorry, that should be Harry Baumert who took the picture, and the guy rescuing the cats is Brandon Smith.

I was in the flood in Waterloo, which can be seen in a couple of pictures from the link posted above. The flood was insane, and a few weeks before that there was a F5 tornado in Parkersburg, which you might have heard about.
Iowa got slammed that summer.
