so what happens when your kids encounter ‘violence’ in real life and dont know how to deal with it cuz rather then exposing your child and showing them how to deal with that type of situation you sheltered them. its not about the content, its about how you teach your child the truth about life, eventually it comes out so better not to with hold it now. i was in a small christian school of 35 kids till i reached grade 8, and then went to a public highschool of over 1000. reality smacked me in the face and let me tell you the years it took me to figure things out that most kids had learned and experienced already. NOT COOL

i suppose you need to live in a place where you encounter animals other then the odd domestic dog/cat in your enviroment of concrete. these ppl obviously know the risks of living in bear country, and most likely have alot of experience with wildlife. dont pass judgement unless you know the facts. im sure your not perfect either.

wow…i grew up in a small mill town and one thing i remember ever since i can remember is hunting/fishing. i was shooting a gun, gutting my own fish and plucking the grouse i would get. i have dealt with putting pets down over the years, losing family members after watching them wither with an incurable illness over a period of time ect all before i was 12. my childhood was filled with more of these types of events then my adulthood. i dont think i’m “messed up” or damaged mentally for my experiences, in fact i think i am much better person to have had these experiences. who do you think you are to pass judgment on anyone? im sure your not perfect in every way. let this woman raise her child as she sees fit and you raise yours the same. agree to disagree and stop being judgmental

Kinda a silly thing to say. People take everything in different ways. For a kid to be able to take such events as calmly as he did is abnormal. But to shun them for it is silly. And in a way a bad trait that shouldn’t be taught to your kids eh? . Accept people for who they are, not what you think them to be.

So I didn’t read all 300+ comments on this thread, but how many of you who are all bent out of shape actually live in bear country, around bears vs. how many of you have seen “When Bears Attack” on fox? Also, that cat is clearly an indoor/outdoor cat. Not my fat and lazy indoor kitteh. I’m sure it has encountered bears before. And lastly, this and every other baby/animal pic or vid that has a elebenty-billion comments… keep in mind that this is a few seconds of a story that started way before and continued after this video. There is an entire context that you all don’t have and we can only speculate at. None of you have all the facts. What moments of your lives would look terrible taken out of the surrounding context? Stop being so high and mighty.

what you just said reminds me of this thing we were talking about in hunters saftey a while back. we were talking about why you shouldent feed a bear. Well anyway this guy who once was in yellow stone natinal park or glaciar natinal park or some park like that he was bringing bears into the basement of a log cabin and feeding them…the bears kept coming back but by the time he was done he had i think it was 20 or 30 bears coming back reling on him to feed him. well park rangers found out about it and he had like a realy big fee he had to pay for it then he had to move out of montana….i think he called himself the bearman. sorry if some info is wrong we talked about it like 8 months ago.

dude. I live in southeast alaska. black bears are EVERYWHERE. since I was a young child, I’ve been chasing them out of my yard. all it takes is a loud noise like a pop gun, or a painball to the rear. I had a cat that took on a bear, and got swiped in the leg. a trip to the vet later, she was fine.
I watched a cat or two get carried off by bald eagles too. any idea how much that sucks? there’s absolutely nothing you can do about it since the bastards are federally protected.
in the wild, blackbears are among the least preditory creatures I have encountered. as long as you keep your distance and don’t do anythign stupid, they won’t hurt you. garbage bears are all but tame. the ones that used to come around our neighborhood were too cowardly to even take a swipe at our dog, who hounded their heels as soon as they were in smelling distance. We let the dog out when we saw bears, so that she would chase them away. she was always outside playing with us as kids, for that very reason.
our cats were all inside/outside cats. believe it or not, that cat would not have gotten hurt even if the bear had gotten agressive, because the cat would have run away, and can fit into spaces that that bear can’t even dream of. anyone who’s familiar with these situations knows this. anyone else should shut up and remember that suburbia is as far away from nature as youcan possibly get. if you grew up there, don’t talk about nature.

Yes the cat was awesome, however covering the childs’ eyes will not prevent the child from being hurt should the worst have happened, . the cat should have been kept in the house ..period. Also if the cat had been killed or maimed, at some point in the future the child WILL say Mom why didn’t you keep the cat from going out there

Yeah, losing outdoor pets to wildlife is a common country problem. I’ve lost about ten barn cats in the past seven years.

I wouldn’t count on bear attack probabilities, though. I’ve dealt with too many animals, wild and domestic, to assume anything anymore.

The problem that I see is that the bear is learning where a source of food is located. It may be young now, but it is going to get a whole lot bigger over time and bolder with more success. A brick wall might stop it, but doors and windows won’t.

I imagine, were we to put a tracking collar on this bear and assuming nothing changes in its environment, we would see it foraging regularly around human homes. Extrapolating further out over time, we would see it lose its fear of humans and become aa threat. The final event would be the story on the evening news about a rogue bear breaking into a home and being shot by animal control.

Dead on, Tanya. Defensive behavior is one of the most dangerous and unpredictable behaviors *because* the animal is in a high stress state. It could decided in an instant that avoidance isn’t working and overt aggression is the only way to end the conflict.

Furthermore, body language can only tell you what is happening at that instant, not an instant or two forward in time. If someone working with animals (wild or domestic) the quickest way to end up in intensive care is to assume that a.) the current encounter will always be like past encounters and b.) that behaviors won’t change in an instant. Indeed, the worst injuries often come from the animals considered most “solid” and “predictable.”

Whether people rent or own is no excuse for stupidity/lack of common sense re leaving garbage outside in bear country. Not even making an effort to create as much noise or distraction to (hopefully) frighten off bear and attempting to protect/save cat is equally stoopit and irresponsible. Prioritizing a video of the event, w/no concern for the cat’s welfare as well as potentially traumatizing her baby is reprehensible.

And for those who keep preaching to “Get over it. It was funny”…why are you people even visiting this site? I was under the impression ICHC is devoted to enjoying and appreciating our animals (cats especially). What part of BEAR vs. cat don’t you understand? It’s a freaking bear upwards of probably 200lbs – cub or no cub- by comparison to a tiny, maybe 10lb cat. Where is the humor in that potentially devastating outcome? Now I know the insensitive cretins Hollywood panders to with their idea of humor is placing the premise of a small dog or cat in jeopardy in one of their “alleged” comedies.

I once saw a video-now removed:

This was attempted by a different family. They threw the cat outside when there was a bear. The cat already tried to run back but the stupid woman was in a diferent room trying to video, but she couldn’t see the cat. She immediately ran to the front door to get the cat, but once she got there she could see the bear’s back turned, with the cat in it’s mouth, it walked into the forest with the cat still squirming. No doubt it wasn’t seen again.

I have been a wildlife biologist for the past 20 years. We have a saying “A fed bear is a dead bear”, because this kind of human behavior is what encourages and habituates bears to seek out food from homes. With a few successful raids like this, the bear gets more bold and agressive, and generally the final result is an injured person (or worse) and the game wardens have to come out and kill the bear. Very sad. I am glad the cat was OK this time. I don’t have a lot of hope for the bears future. I wish the video had a disclaimer or something, make it a teachable moment. Feeding bears or allowing them to steal your garbage is a very bad idea. Cute video, sure, but with a tragic downside.

Assuming that a cat probably has the intelligence level of a child or an adult is not a very valid argument. Domesticated animals are not prepared to deal with “wild” encounters. That being said, if you have an indoor cat that is de-clawed and domesticated, I very much doubt you would let it outside to fend off a bear. If it was a feral cat it would have probably been smart enough to hide or just leave the bear alone. However, defending territory is usually innate in most creatures, and this cat may have jumped to the front lines to defend his home.

Are you kidding me??? I would never let my cat outside to fend off a bear! The bear could have easily killed, or even worse, eaten the poor cat! Granted, this time the cat did win, but what happens the next time when the bear has had enough? For those of you who say ‘relax’ maybe you should try putting yourself in the same situation. Would you do that to your own cat? Maybe your dog?
As for the parenting, this lady is a complete moron. She’s giggling and laughing away, thinking this is just a great show. Did she think twice about leaving garbage outside, in the open, with bears roaming around? Probably not, and like everyone else said, the bear is now as good as dead.
Please, remove this video. I was not impressed with it at all and was stunned watching what was unfolding.

I actually agree that this was my far larger issue. It was a bizarre thing to laugh at; like a bear coming up on your porch and stealing your garbage (maybe not even the first time) is somehow cute and funny? It might have been young and skittish but it probably would have been a far different outcome had it been cornered. In the end, it was still highly driven to get the garbage. The sad thing the animal that will most likely die in this scenario is the bear for learning that houses are a place of food.

Standing up for yourself works in a work or school situation, but not when your cat, with a basica “fight-or-flight” thought system, is going toe to toe with a bear, no matter how young or old, at LEAST four times this size.
