  1. Brianna says:

Why would you have let your child sit there and watch that? If the bear had killed the cat the kid would have been traumatized for life. Horrible parenting.

    • CheezPete says:

There’s caek in teh braek rum!!!!

    • fiendishrabbit says:

      But the cat won.
Saving our kids from every kind of hurt and every little trauma isn’t possible.
      It isn’t LIFE.
If you’re going to play it completely safe you’re going to miss a lot in life.
Seeing your housecat scare off a black bear is the kind of awesome you don’t want you kid to miss.

Also, it was a wee liddle black bear. They’re pretty shy and not too brave.

      • Redneck_Rebel says:

Where there are cubs there is usually also a mother.

      • Brianna says:

… I have seen a black bear tear a dog to pieces. Yeah I don’t mind letting children watch horror movies etc. I wouldn’t want to raise goo children that haven’t seen anything in life. But if I can save my (4?) year old from seeing a cat paw swiped to death I would. There is a difference between acceptable violence and unescessary. If the cat hadn’t gotten hurt (which it didn’t) let the kid watch the video. Keep it away from the window…

        • Cathryn says:

          Exactly my thoughts.

Not a risk I’d want to put my cats in.

        • Carola says:

How iz horror movee apropreeyet for fore yeer old? I wood rather my chield be familyar wid natchoor: and all da components derin den sum terribul film dat playz on horor and dred!

        • Third_Reign says:

As an adult you can pretty much see when a bear will shred the cat. That bear right there had no real intrest in the cat. even if, you’ll see when the bear switches to agressive mode. all you have to do it cover your childs eyes with your hands when you see it comming.

          problem solved.

On a side note, that cat was awesome!

          • Tanya says:

            Third Reich,

a human can not move as fast as a bear. Cover the child’s eyes? Are you serious?

          • critterperson says:

hands aren’t as fast as cla swipes – especially when said hands hold a camera

          • Brianna says:

Too busy her hands were busy holding a camera to do anything with the kid.

          • cavebear says:

Yes the cat was awesome, however covering the childs’ eyes will not prevent the child from being hurt should the worst have happened, . the cat should have been kept in the house ..period. Also if the cat had been killed or maimed, at some point in the future the child WILL say Mom why didn’t you keep the cat from going out there

        • Lo says:

Not to mention, black bear, even if not the most dangerous bear in the world, can break into the house and hurt both mom and kid. Great idea to open that window thede…

      • Kerze says:

You mean risk having your child watch the family pet get slashed wide open by a bear paw and possibly carried off by the bear to be eaten? There’s a difference between bad experiences and completely traumatizing events friend.

I helped my mom raise ducks as a kid and saw a cougar kill and run off with one of them, that kind of crap really affects you, especially when you’re an 8 year old seeing that. Short of telling my lifestory here, lets just say it has not had the best repercussions in my life that you may of thought otherwise.

        • alex says:

Errr, I watched a guy shoot his dog and then shoot himself in the head and I was 8. I was old enough to know that terrible things like that sometimes happen. My dad cried and told me he wished I hadn’t seen it, it wasn’t his fault, and I found it strangely fascinating and also apparently it was an “adult situation” that I shouldn’t have seen, according to how everyone was reacting, and I felt somehow privaleged.

Previous to that I had watched my mom shoot a dog (ok, my sister and I were like 4 sitting outside in our unfenced front lawn, and I guess from my mom’s point of view the dog was behaving in a threatening manner, I dunno really).

I also watched my cat get run over at 7. I shooed it to go back home and it turned around, ran across the street and was hit right in front of me.

I don’t think there is a “too early” for kids. Kids are smarter than people give them credit for. I’m happy my parents didn’t shelter me, otherwise I’d cry foul and overreact a lot.

          • Mari says:

Do not ever come near my children.

            • localoba81 says:

Why? Because the guy had some bad experiences as a kid and got over them? I’m sure there’s nothing anyone could learn from that.

              • Tanya says:

No, localoba81, it’s because Alex is seriously messed up (speaking for myself, of course).

Alex, what happened to you as a child was deplorable and I absolutely feel for you. However, you scare me–because you do not seem to understand how wrong it was. Parents should be protecting their kids *because* they are “smarter than people give them credit for.”

Smart is not the same thing as invulnerable.

Do you not understand the difference?

                • derp says:

Kinda a silly thing to say. People take everything in different ways. For a kid to be able to take such events as calmly as he did is abnormal. But to shun them for it is silly. And in a way a bad trait that shouldn’t be taught to your kids eh? :) . Accept people for who they are, not what you think them to be.

      • Bun Bun says:

I’m fairly sure if anything happened it be pretty easy to turn the kid away from the window and set him down where he couldn’t see out, no sweat, plus, I mean if you are living where there are bears, you better be ready for that kind of thing. It just wanted the trash, it wasn’t desperate enough to go after a tasty putty tat.

      • Kate says:

The point is, that was the most irresponsible thing I have ever seen and whoever this woman is, she is a little sick in the head to think that is funny. I pity both her child and her cat.

        • Darth Mirius says:

Just… wow. I agree. Watching out the window and laughing would NOT have been my first reaction, and my second would NOT have been to let my kid watch. Kudos to the cat, and yeah I could tell the bear wasnt interested, but still. That cat should really fire its owner.

        • Renita says:

Really? That’s the most irresponsible thing you’ve EVER seen? I have seen much more irresponsible things on television every day. I have seen some of the smut on television and think it’s irresponsible of parents to let their children even watch those things. Degrassi? OC? MTV? Hello? Stop worrying about a woman letting her kid see a cat and start worrying about what the media is filling the young minds of today with.

Parents these days are way too over-protective. Kids can’t climb in trees anymore, because they might fall and get hurt. Kids have rubber-lined playgrounds so that they won’t fall and scrape their knee AND GET INFECTED AND DIE. A kid can’t watch it’s cat fight off a bear because the cat MIGHT have gotten hurt. Dear lord people, way to shelter your kids.

I saw my very own personal cat (when I was 8) strung up to a fence by a leash because some sick bastard in the neighborhood decided to torture her. Sure, that was traumatizing, but it was life. All it did was make me hate animal abusers. I was the one that found my first hamster when it died of old age when I was 6. Was I sad? Yes. Was I horribly traumatized? No. It’s life and death. Kids need to learn of these things eventually.

In this case, the mom would have noticed if the bear was going to start eating the cat, and would have grabbed the child. It actually looks like this had happened before. She’d set out trash and some bear cub comes along and her cat freaks out on it. So next time she figures she’ll record it.

Either way, you people are all waaaay too over critical of this woman. I’m sure we’ve all done something just as stupid or worse than this.

          Kudos to the cat.

          • Tanya says:

            Renita,

What happened to your cat is so sad.

I don’t think you understand though–the bear was more dangerous than you seem to realize.

You’re probably right about this happening before–that was a sharp observation–but that is not comforting. In fact, it makes it worse! She would have had time to think about what she was doing and realize the danger.

            • bob says:

dude. I live in southeast alaska. black bears are EVERYWHERE. since I was a young child, I’ve been chasing them out of my yard. all it takes is a loud noise like a pop gun, or a painball to the rear. I had a cat that took on a bear, and got swiped in the leg. a trip to the vet later, she was fine.
I watched a cat or two get carried off by bald eagles too. any idea how much that sucks? there’s absolutely nothing you can do about it since the bastards are federally protected.
in the wild, blackbears are among the least preditory creatures I have encountered. as long as you keep your distance and don’t do anythign stupid, they won’t hurt you. garbage bears are all but tame. the ones that used to come around our neighborhood were too cowardly to even take a swipe at our dog, who hounded their heels as soon as they were in smelling distance. We let the dog out when we saw bears, so that she would chase them away. she was always outside playing with us as kids, for that very reason.
our cats were all inside/outside cats. believe it or not, that cat would not have gotten hurt even if the bear had gotten agressive, because the cat would have run away, and can fit into spaces that that bear can’t even dream of. anyone who’s familiar with these situations knows this. anyone else should shut up and remember that suburbia is as far away from nature as youcan possibly get. if you grew up there, don’t talk about nature.

          • Ian says:

Renita, I’m sorry but the case you refer to isn’t life, that’s mental illness or a pathology! Kids, at all ages, should be sheltered to a reasonable extent. Kids can see bad things, but that doesn’t mean that they should! I’m one for keeping kids safe, but I wouldn’t make all kids into “bubble boys and girls.” Personally, I believe this mother (camera holder) has a pathology of her own, given she responded to a potential tragedy of nature with LAUGHTER. Letting the kid see that could have damaged the mind of that child. This taught the child to LAUGH at situations where laughter is EXTREMELY inappropriate.

But in the end, that cat was WIN.

            • Josie says:

That lady was an idiot! I mean, who would get their cat to fight a bear, and laugh about it?!? Let alone show their child, What wonderful parents the world has today.

        • lisa says:

I agree with Kate. I cannot believe that twit was laughing as her cat went up against the bear. She should not be breeding if she thinks a dangerous situation is funny.

        • Heather says:

wow…i grew up in a small mill town and one thing i remember ever since i can remember is hunting/fishing. i was shooting a gun, gutting my own fish and plucking the grouse i would get. i have dealt with putting pets down over the years, losing family members after watching them wither with an incurable illness over a period of time ect all before i was 12. my childhood was filled with more of these types of events then my adulthood. i dont think i’m “messed up” or damaged mentally for my experiences, in fact i think i am much better person to have had these experiences. who do you think you are to pass judgment on anyone? im sure your not perfect in every way. let this woman raise her child as she sees fit and you raise yours the same. agree to disagree and stop being judgmental

      • saviorofanimals says:

Are you kidding me? This wasn’t trying to save the kid, this was tossing the cat at the bar and encouraging it to “get the bear.” You can never predict how a wild animal will act! In my mind, this is no different than tossing two dogs in a ring. In my area, that woman would be sitting in jail for animal abuse, and never see her kid again. But lets not worry about shielding a child from “little trauma” This video should be removed!

    • Redneck_Rebel says:

Not only is the child watching, he/she is laughing his/her head off. Nice bit of parenting there…

      • Brianna says:

Agreed. The scene ended ok, I will not deny that. MY comment was on the possibility that it might not have.

        • I think maybe the cat has encountered bears before, so the woman isn’t worried. She’s encouraging the cat, saying “Go get him, Mininne!”(or whatever the cat’s name is).

Mind you, there’s also a 2-4 of empties on the porch….

    • Exayevie says:

Hahaha, bull. You worry too much.

    • Sue says:

Right on! That bear could have eaten that cat in one bite. I wouldn’t want to watch that either, they better quit leaving garbage on the porch, she wouldn’t think that was so funny if the kid had been out there. People are so damn stupid about wild animals.

      • Sam says:

I actually agree that this was my far larger issue. It was a bizarre thing to laugh at; like a bear coming up on your porch and stealing your garbage (maybe not even the first time) is somehow cute and funny? It might have been young and skittish but it probably would have been a far different outcome had it been cornered. In the end, it was still highly driven to get the garbage. The sad thing the animal that will most likely die in this scenario is the bear for learning that houses are a place of food.

        • Heather says:

i suppose you need to live in a place where you encounter animals other then the odd domestic dog/cat in your enviroment of concrete. these ppl obviously know the risks of living in bear country, and most likely have alot of experience with wildlife. dont pass judgement unless you know the facts. im sure your not perfect either.

    • Thomas H. says:

Amen! I can’t believe she was laughing as a bear was nose-to-nose with her cat. Evem a young bear like that one is more than capable of ripping that little cat to pieces.

    • BAReFOOt says:

If, if, if. If the Hitler had won the war, the world would be bad.
      *But he didn’t!*

Now the child learned a great lesson: Stand up for yourself. Because size does not matter. Dominance does.
That child will kick your child’s *ass* sometime in the future! ^^

I guess the mom simply was educated enough, to know, that a cat can kick a bear’s ass! Remember the cat that chased the bear up a tree? And do you really think the cat did not *exactly* know what it was doing?
Wild animals know how to handle each other properly. The cat knows it, and the bear knows it. The cat saw, that the bear had a defensive body language. Not an offensive one. The cat protected its territory.
Don’t underestimate animals. Only because humans forgot how to act in the wilderness, doesn’t mean they have.

      • Kate says:

The only lesson that child learned from this was that if he sees a bear in the woods, he can scare it away by swatting at it. That get him killed. Then again, Darwinism applies to us, too… I don’t want anyone that thinks they can go toe to toe with a bear to be reproducing, thus saddling society with their moronic children as well.

        • Kate says:

That gets*** him killed. Haha oops.

        • alex says:

I don’t think a child would try that. Bears are frickin’ scary, and if Mom there lives in bear country I’m sure she and kid know a little bit about bears.

Kids like to pretend they’re animals, but not in the sense that they go out and eat other animals poop they find, and get in fights and hump each other. They just run around on all fours and make animal sounds.

        • Renita says:

No, the kid would have learned that his/her cat is its best friend against a bear. And I’m sure that since the kid lives around these bears, his/her parents have told them what to do in that case. BAReFOOt was right.

        • Will says:

if you live in the woods away from the city. This goes on day to day animals will get hurt or worse. True the trash should never be left out like that. But the kid will see that all the time. Cat took charge and did a great job.

      • nobuddy says:

        Size doesn’t matter.

Except when it does and the bear decides to eat you.

        http://www.mountainnature.com/wildlife/bears/BearEncounters.htm

Pissing off a bear by being confrontational is one of the worst things to do.

      • Brianna says:

No, that child learned to stand up to any opponant no matter if you are going to get your ass kicked or not. That is a bad lesson. Teach a child to pick battles, not die a painful death.

      • Tanya says:

“Don’t underestimate animals?” You disprove your own argument. Think about it.

      • Ian says:

Dominance, dominance, blah blah blah. Standing up for yourself works in a work or school situation, but not when your cat, with a basica “fight-or-flight” thought system, is going toe to toe with a bear, no matter how young or old, at LEAST four times this size. I’d like to see the numbers: Number of cats who chased a bear up a tree compared to the number of cats killed by a bear.

    • Kathy says:

My thought exactly. VERY poor judgment.

    • Denise says:

      I whoeheartedly agree w/ Brianna.

    • BJacques says:

I thought EXACTLY the same thing. That was truly thoughtless. Pets are extremely important family members to children. That had the potential to be life changing for that child.

    • SchlagerFuchs says:

This! I wholeheartedly agree. Why would you do that?

    • Erin says:

I totally agree! That was the first thing that went through my mind, listening to the little one laugh. Yipes!

    • CMS says:

THANK YOU!!! That was all I thought about when I saw this. Sure the cat’s cute, kids like that. The bear is cute, kids like that. The bear eviscerating your cat and eating it??? Not cute, probably pretty traumatic.

    • Virginia says:

Agreed! This was a potentially very dangerous situation and *NOT* funny!!!

    • Tanya says:

Brianna is absolutely right. LOLcats, you ought to remove this video!

Fiendishrabbit, you don’t get it. Would you leave a baby in the middle of the street and videotape cars swerving to avoid him? Frankly, I think you’re rationalizing.

I can’t tell if the person who made this video is an idiot who didn’t realize what could have happened to the cat or a sadist. Oh, and trust me–that bear could easily have shredded that poor cat.

    • andykatz says:

I am in full agreement…Not only would I NOT be videotaping my cat quite probably being killed by a bear, I would NOT let my child be present and I would NOT be effin laughing.. I WOULD be outside with any item I could grab to chase the bear away from MY cat….The bear had probably never seen a cat…Next time the result may not be so “funny”….

    • bamahern says:

      adn luk – ur furst!
      ain’t u prowd?

    • amy says:

I am guessing that no one expected the cat to go after the bear. And when it did it was obvious that the baby bear was no threat to the cat

    • ted nugent says:

People like you are the reason that Guys now act like women, it is a part of life………death, so deal with it.

    • cavebear says:

I agree, i found it horrifying to hear the laughter

    • what? says:

Maybe if we didn’t coddle our children to the point of making them retarded, seeing basic facts of life, predator eating prey, shouldn’t traumatize them. horrible sensibilities

  2. luvscatsva says:

    Dat iz wun gutsy kitteh!

  3. kittycatlion says:

Kittehs 1 Berz 1…kitteh nawt wuntin trashz..kitteh smartz, lezt teh ber hab de trashz..kleffer kitteh letz teh ber fink ut wun!

  4. Cypress says:

I totally agree… And why was it so funny…? Do you not care about your cats life??

    • Rosie says:

I sincerely doubt the woman was going to rush out and put her life in danger for her cat’s. She was calling the cat, which is about all she could do. You people freak out over nothing for goodness sake. Cat’s fine, bear’s fine, kid’s fine, mom’s fine. It’s a funny video!

      • Darth Mirius says:

Heh, I would have. And have, with a pack of wild dogs and a water hose. And I don’t think that laughing and calling the cat from the window was all that she could do. Stop leaving the trash out to attract the bears in the first place. What if that had been her *child* on the porch instead?

      • Rio says:

Yes, she was calling the cat, but she was laughing before she had a clue that the cat would be okay. I certainly wouldn’t have been laughing or letting my child watch. I probably would have been screaming if my cat were out there trying to attack a bear. I’m not as worried about the baby bear, but the mother bear has to be around close by. As for the comments about children watching violent television, I wouldn’t allow my kids to do that either, but that’s just me, I guess.

        • Rebecca says:

so what happens when your kids encounter ‘violence’ in real life and dont know how to deal with it cuz rather then exposing your child and showing them how to deal with that type of situation you sheltered them. its not about the content, its about how you teach your child the truth about life, eventually it comes out so better not to with hold it now. i was in a small christian school of 35 kids till i reached grade 8, and then went to a public highschool of over 1000. reality smacked me in the face and let me tell you the years it took me to figure things out that most kids had learned and experienced already. NOT COOL

      • Josie says:

Rosie, how is that funny may I ask? It wasn’t funny, it was disgusting! Recently on the news a cat was put in the washing maching and turned on rinse cycle, (it lived) would you find that funny?

          • alex says:

There’s a TV blaring in another room here, but it sounded like she was yelling something … in a foreign language? maybe we can get a translation!

people react really slowly in real life though and this happened pretty fast. its clear to us watching this video that it wasnt great (but funny seeing the bear run off) and that we could/should have done something but maybe not fast enough.

            • JAJEH says:

If you are living in bear country, you should be prepared to see bears and ready to react.

              • alex says:

Ehhh, I had bears and cougars around my childhood home, despite all that I still don’t think I wiould have known what to do if I actually encountered one. XD Freeze up and get eaten probably.

            • She’s speaking French. She says at the end, “Oh, my cucumbers and my tomatoes!” Hungry bear is hungry!

            • Noaka says:

It’s french. She’s saying “Let’s go kitteh!!” (since “mimine” is a familiar name here). She’s just cheering for the cat.

We are used to bear here in Canada. But I have to say that if my cat ever encounter one, I’d be really scared. But usually, they get easily scared. There not much story here about bear hurting people or animals. Fox are even more dangerous for our little domestics friends.

              • Noaka says:

She even says “Come back here!!”.. so she’s not just a heartless woman after all :P

Sorry for my bad english btw :s

                • alex says:

Thank you! I speak very little french so I wasn’t clear on what was going on.

I figured, and am assuming (as everyone else is assuming and jumping to conclusions here) that she’s used to situations like that. I also assumed that the child laughing was probably just near her but not watching out the window. Or maybe it was watching out the window, but you know kids pick up on vibes so if mom starts screaming bloody murder, the kid will too, even if the cat was getting mauled maybe it would be in the kids best interests to laugh and act like it’s just a tv show and everything is OK.

            • guillaume says:

She’s saying something like “Let’s go kitty” and “come back here” in french (french canadian to be exact)

              • Brianna says:

Alex, that is kind of morbid. I know sometimes a gruesome first encounter with death is unnavoidable….. yet I wish that all of them could be as peaceful as the one I saw. I wouldn’t want the kid to see the family cat get evicerated.. even at 21…

    • luvscatsva says:

Pffft. My kittehs won’t even bother to chase skwirrls owt of bird feeders.

  8. mej42 says:

That was not just poor parenting, but obscene pet ownership. They shouldn’t have been allowed to breed.

    • Brianna says:

The part with the cat was unfortunate, but it just happened to be outside when this happened and the cat tried to protect its territory. Not going to say it is the most intelligent cat in the world… but loyal and cute. I wouldn’t have risked my own life to save the cat either. I would have yelled out the window like they did, but I wouldn’t have been laughing. I would have been throwing things. At the bear. Get away from my cat dernit!

      • Tarantino says:

I may or may not have risked my life either, but I sure would be banging anything I could bang on the walls and windows to try and scare that bear! And having failed at that, I’d have grabbed the kid and gotten her away from the possible carnage!

      • kbird says:

Brianna – this woman “threw the cat out the door onto the porch as the bear was on the bottom step” – I watched that, assuming she was either nuts or “on something” ’cause nobody in his or her right mind would even consider tossing a family pet [cat in this case] toward a bear OF ANY AGE whether children were present or not!! Methinks ICHC might be regretting airing this not-so-palatable video, BUT THEY HAVE STIRRED UP THE MASSES VIA “REPLY” MODE, SO…………… I have so enjoyed reading so much non-lol speak this evening — back to normal, I reckon, with next kitteh photo w/caption to give me joy! K

        • Brianna says:

          ummm… tank u. :p
I do not agree that the woman threw, placed, set, or in any other manner meant to have the cat go outside. I was merely commenting on the fact that after cat and bear were together, she did little to actually stop the fight. Also, she did nothing to stop her child from watching the scene unfold. This is my point. I DO NOT think she wanted to watch the cat fight with the bear.

  9. Rae says:

I agree that the person who let that cat take on the bear is a terrible parent, both for children and kittehs. That bear might be “shy” and “not too brave” but no one could know for certain that it wouldn’t kill that cat with one swipe of its massive paw. That would have been horrible for the child and cruel to the kitteh. Anyone who says it’s okay because “the cat won” is missing the point, as is anyone who thinks that trying to save an animal from potential harm is somehow shielding a child from “life”. That is an ignorant viewpoint.

    • CodeTech says:

So anything YOU don’t agree with is ignorant? Sure…

Watch the video again. At first she’s horrified that the cat is chasing after the bear. After seeing how the bear is scared of the cat, she starts to giggle a bit. As I would. And probably you would… if only from relief.

      • Tinkerbelle says:

We have coyotes and cougars around here. Knew of one person hiking with Jack Russell terrier that encountered a couger. Dog started screaming at the cat and took off after it. Couger ran, dog chased, owner laughed. Until the couger had that ‘wait a minute’ moment. “why am I running from this small crazy dog?” So it ate the dog. Confrontations can evolve, and not nicely with such unequal confrontations.

  10. Muchsake says:

This was not the first time it happened, the cat was let out. I think that the victor was already known so why not let the kid watch?

    • Brianna says:

Because accidents happen all the time and bears are known for becoming increasingly agressive and less fearful of things. Even timid little blackbears will go into peoples houses and kill anything that gets in the way of an escape.

    • Harry says:

That’s what I thought – that the cat was put out on the porch by the woman when the window/door opened, and the woman was all ready to video the results. Now that is what I call irresponsible – bordering on sadistic – pet ownership!

  11. ai says:

    Cat owner fail.

  12. cweenmj says:

  13. Amy says:

I agree with Brianna, quite stupid on the parents part. I noticed the child seat out in the yard, so the kid is quite young and they’re not properly locking up their garbage, so it’s only going to encourage wildlife to come into their yard to the point that the bear won’t be afraid to come back even when people are in the yard.

  14. Who leaves bags of garbage out in a forested area where bears might be? They were just asking for this.

    • Iz nawt garbij, is cucumbahs n t’maters.

    • redreh says:

My thoughts exactly. Are you kidding with that? Good God! That’s like going camping and not tying up your food so the bears can’t get to it, only more mindless, because this is your home, and where a bear finds food once he’ll hope to find it again. Not to mention opening the window to let your cat OUT to fight it, then having your child watch?

Oh my oh my oh my.

Thank God that is one kickass kitty.

    • Steve says:

Was thinking the same thing. Next time it might be the kid playing outside when the bear comes around looking for more garbage.

  15. Tarantino says:

I HATE this video. Not one exclaimation of worry about the cat, just giggling about the bear.

    • Schreukat says:

i must concur. The most disturbing part though, was the toddler’s screamy-laugh. Not that I think the kid had any notion of what was going on, just two big fuzzies acting funny, but just that the volume and timber of the screeching was like fingernails on chalkboards to me, and in context of a dangerous situation….*shudder*….

  16. Maddychan says:

Bad parenting. What kind of loser sends his cat after a bear, seriously???? I’m ashamed to say that these people share the same nationality with me. They’re french…canadians….from Quebec. Shame, really.

  17. Sue says:

This video should be taken down. Not funny at all!

  19. Corona says:

I’m willing to bet that this is a normal encounter between the cat and bear, and often put on a show. I’d also bet that the FIRST time this family saw this happen, they were freaking out!

  20. Luna says:

This does not belong here. It’s a terrible video. It’s disturbing that this person is laughing and cheering for the cat, when it could’ve been killed.

  21. Twilightcat1 says:

    Bear: Epic fail

Kitteh: Epic win!! In french! :)

  22. Kaylana says:

I agree with those before me who raised concerns about the wisdom of letting a toddler be witness and take joy in what might have been a horrible mutilation of a loved pet.

But equally appalling to me is the total lack of concern for said pet. You’re going to laugh at the mortal peril of the small furry life you’re supposed to be responsible for? And it looked to me like the cat was allowed outdoors to chase after the bear. I could be wrong, but it looked like it was running from indoors to outdoors. I’m a strong advocate of indoor kitties anyway, but especially when you’re neighbors with bears.

I’m surprised Lolcats posted this video.

  23. Sobriqueteh says:

It sounds like the woman was screaming frantically at first, but then realized the bear was not going to hurt the cat and let the baby look out the window.

  24. PoussinBoi says:

    Bair gawt trash !!
Kitteh cud hab bene trasht !!
Oar iz teh wurd ai wont, “thrashed” ??

An aussie wawks intu a bar in Nyu York adn sez, “Cud ai hab a beer, mait”
adn teh barman sez, “Yu wont a … bair ?????

  25. Sobriqueteh says:

Okay, I just watched it again and it looks like the kitteh was let out AFTER the bear came up on the porch. Mah kitteh sez:
    Ah cannot condone dat.

  26. Kaylana says:

She realized the bear was not going to hurt the cat when exactly? She was laughing when the bear’s nose was close enough for the cat to swat it.

  27. sm says:

yeah what the hell at this video. if i were the owner of that cat i would be worried , regardless of the size of the bear. watching that poor cat trying to defend himself and laughing your ass off? yes , real funny

  28. PoussinBoi says:

Kittee: Yu can taik it nao, coz ai wun !!

  29. Ang says:

What are they standing there laughing for?

I’m glad that the kitteh did well in scaring off the bear, but I sure as hell didn’t find it funny.

  30. mindy says:

Seriously. Why the hell would you sit there and laugh when your cat is in serious danger?? and then post the video here…

  31. G.R. says:

Nobody knows what really happened, but everyone has an opinion. How about the Zapruder film; you guys know who killed JFK?

  32. thewonderpony says:

Yeah, i have to agree with everyone on the bad parenting/unpreparedness line. When you move/live somewhere you have to be aware and prepared for the things living in that area. Florida, we have snakes and alligators and hurricanes. Evidently where this was, it’s black bears, idiots who leave saddles out on the porch, and oh, well, just plain idiots.

  33. Kaylana says:

I know enough to know it wasn’t a situation to be taken lightly and be laughed at, not if you have any care for the life of your pet, anyway.

  34. TKatt says:

WHY are they laughing when their cat could be killed at any moment? These people are messed up.

  35. drgnfly says:

I fink dat kitteh has a brayve. I gigglol wen i is scared so mebbe tha laydee was too.

  37. catfriend says:

This is disgusting! Why did that woman let her cat out with that bear outside??? At first she sounded upset, but then amused. Sick. I’d like to amuse the backside of her head with One Big Slap. And letting her toddler laugh and teach her this is ok? A slap to momma ain’t enough to improve her parenting skills.

  38. Zach says:

Why the hell do you people type like that? Stop. Its cute in the pictures, not when you do it. Kinda creepy, actually.

  39. ajgazmen says:

    yea… i found this vid trouble-ing
    parenting… FAIL

  40. Lein says:

Very irresponsable and dumb to get your cat to go out to the bear! what if the bear had caught the cat??? would you and your kid still be laughing then?

  41. PoussinBoi says:

Teh bair wuz in a hurree tu get bak tu teh wudz … fur sum reezin !!

  42. servant2-4catz says:

We live in bear country and we have a special name for catz that get let outside up here: food.

Those people are just asking for it and they don’t deserve the cat. Cute, not.

  43. N. Caso says:

Anyone who sets out a garbage bag on their porch in bear country is an idiot – especially if they have children. What if that kid had been outside instead of the cat? There’s no excuse for stupidity.

  44. cgray says:

French-Canadians are STRANGE people. That’s not a generalization. What kind of person would find the potential death of their pet amusing?

    • QUEBEC! says:

yeah, just shut it. You are just racist*!

    • andy says:

Yep she does sound mad, just screaming “vas-y mimine!!!” wth is wrong is her asking her kid to go watch the cat possibly getting shredded …

And if you live in an area where bears live, why leave garbage outside for the bears? You’d hope the people living there would be respectul of nature, but i guess you don’t end up living in the woods for no reason :p

    • Caro says:

I am French-Canadian. I am strange, in an endearing, cutesy kind of way… I have to disagree with your comment saying that all French-Canadians are strange – most of us are actually quite boring, tbh. But I do agree that the video is quite disturbing and that the specific person is indeed strange, in the worst kind of way. I own quite a lot of pets and would never submit them to any of these types of encounters.

    • Mira8 says:

Come on this is ONE person. That’s like saying all Americans are like Paris Hilton.

    • Rio says:

That is by definition a generalization. No people as a group have any one quality, so that kind of statement will always be a generalization. I agree that I don’t find this amusing for the same reason you do, but it has nothing to do with the people being French-Canadian.

  45. CatJammies says:

That idiot woman stupidly laughing as her cat could have instantly been ripped apart before her eyes. I have seen a raccoon rip a cat apart, let alone what a bear could do. Gawd, how far can humans lower themselves for the sake of entertain themselves….

“Hey lil Katie, come quick, we just might get lucky and watch our cat get mauled by a bear right before our very own eyes… bring the camcorder!”

  46. Thaissa says:

    This isn’t funny. :(

  47. PoussinBoi says:

  48. richard says:

everyone seems to be paranoid here. what’s done is done. i just love the the kid’s laughing and the bear being cautious of the feisty cat! ^^

  49. Posting a sure de-lurkifikashun video -ur doin it rite! :D

  50. ruth says:

This videographer ought to be ashamed of themselves.what kind of tool leaves trash on their porch in bear country? You self destructive, selfish prick. Its bad for you – the bear will keep coming back. Its bad for the bear. Stop it. Clean up your damn garbage, you slob. I wish there were free punches in the face for idiots like you or generous monetary fines.

  51. spartycat says:

This video is awful. She purposely let that cat outside to mess with the bear and then stood there and laughed. I don’t care if it had gone well 10 times before this… it is always a risk that this time that bear or his mother could kill that cat or worse.

and I am disheartened by all the 13yr olds on here that are more amused by their lol speak and lack any sense or compassion about this cat and the child in the video

  52. the_drama_duck says:

I usually find the videos on this website quite adorable and LOLable, but this video just disturbed me. At first i thought the woman was yelling about the cat, worriedly, but then, the laughing started and i got chills down my spine. Creepy. and the child laughing? ….this was just disturbing. LOLcat fail

  53. GD says:

    There are many issues here:
    1) The stupid people put trash out on the porch, thus attracting the bear
    2) The kitty could have been killed (easily) and the mother and child are sitting there laughing
    3) By being irresponsible with their trash, they are teaching/aiding the bears to come into human areas for food and the bears will eventually get into “trouble” and end up being killed by rangers or such
    4) The mother is teaching her child BAD behavior when it comes to wild life and protecting and valuing their pets.

  54. Clawed Monet says:

They let the cat out to go after the bear then giggled hysterically. I would have been terrified that the cat might get hurt, because I actually take care of my pets. Even if the cat and bear had had run ins before, that doesn’t mean the bear won’t eventually kill the cat. Then to let your child watch while you giggle hysterically. Parenting fail! Pet owner fail!!

  55. deb says:

what kind of nutjob purposely endangers their pet (physically) AND their child (emotionally if this had gone wrong)?! this video should be removed immediately.

  56. CommonSense says:

FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL……..sometimes I wonder

  57. Kathy says:

SHAME ON YOU, ICHC for even putting this up. It’s not funny, it’s animal abuse.

  58. Kate says:

You are lucky that cat did not die. It was very irresponsible of you to let it outside to begin with, if it was my cat I would have flipped a shit. Where there is a baby bear there is always a mother bear, duh! Let alone, was that like a small child in the background laughing hysterically? That was not funny just extremely disturbing, and frankly I mildly pity both your child and your cat.

    • 5 Eagles says:

That was a two year, she would of been on its own by now. The mother was trying not to scare the kid to death so it wouldn’t have nightmares.
      Guud morning Kate.

  59. Carl729ae says:

Glad the cat didn’t get eaten. That would have put a damper on things.

  60. PoussinBoi says:

Yor up a tree wib a bair far beelo; hao du yu kno if itz a blak bair oar a grizlee tryen tu kilz yu ??

If it climez teh tree tu killz yu, it bi a blak bair !!
If it knox ober teh tree, it wuz a grizlee bair !!

Hab a happee dai foaks !!

  61. Mira8 says:

Not funny, scary. I expect to see stuff like this at CO, not here.

  62. Julie says:

THIS VIDEO NEEDS TO BE TAKEN DOWN…encouraging animal endangerment is NOT COOL

not only is the cat in danger but so is the bear…leaving trash out in a plastic bag is feeding wildlife and could result in the death of this bear. The redneck morons who took this video should be fined

  63. sparkleecats says:

VERY DISTURBING! Bad enough that you wouldn’t try to help your cat. Worse that you would laugh and film it. Can’t wait to see the hilarious sequel – the film of the bear attacking your kid.

  64. Wendy says:

Omg and she laughs… i’d be HORRIFIED what if the bear decides to leave the trash and eat the cat for dinner in stead?

  65. Fiercest kitteh evar! (had sound off…)

  66. al says:

If someone had a bearproof garbage can, AND taken out the trash this wouldn’t have been an issue. BTW catz rule and bears drool!!

    ‘Nuff said

  67. songbird says:

that was terrible, i would have a heart attack if my cat was out there with a bear cub and they’re laughing!!! how horrible

  68. Bree says:

For all we know, this bear could have been a regular visitor they were trying to get rid of. It’s probably around humans a lot and that’s why it was so brazen as to go right up the steps and take the garbage bag. They’ve probably seen this bear before and the cat probably has too. The child laughing sounded extremely young and probably didn’t really know what was going on.

People are so over protective these days. Bad things happen, you can’t shield your child from every single thing. And if something were to happen I’m sure mom on there would cover her kid’s eyes. I once went fishing and caught an eel by accident as a child. The hook went through the eels head so my mom gave the rod to my uncle and covered my eyes so I couldn’t see him kill it. Mom’s know when to make that decision… at least most do.

    • Skye says:

if they wanted to get rid of it, they could start by not leaving garbage bag invitations on the porch. I agree that you can’t protect your child from everything, but not inviting disaster up on the deck is a good way to start. The video camera was rolling before the cat appeared, and I’m wondering if they didn’t set this photo op deliberately. Honestly, everyone knows about trash and bears in bear country.

    • kate says:

Funny way to get rid of a bear, leaving garbage lying around like that. /sarcasm/

    • k says:

Doesn’t change the fact that the bear could have very easily killed the cat if it had wanted to. Any vaguely sensible adult should know this – and yet the woman still let her child watch knowing their was the possibility of this happening, even if the possibility was small.
It also can’t be denied that these idiots left their trash outside in bear country, which is obviously bad not only for them, but also for the bear.

  69. catmama says:

This is funny? Why is this so funny to the videographer and the child? They laugh?! Oh and, in case, it isn’t clear how stupid the adult human is already (leaving a trash bag on the deck in an area with bears; endangering the child etc..) – the confrontation between a cat and a bear is just one reason why cats should be indoors only. One of the many many reasons….

And I agree with Mira8 – this is a CO type of vid – not here. Disappointed ICHC. Very disappointed.

    • MaxPower says:

Your saying that we should totally take away cat’s freedoms because they could get killed, right? Do you think parents shouldn’t let their children go when they turn 18 because they could get murdered? Tell that to any teenager and see what happens.

Now I know how most of you feel about cats on this site, you would take a bullet for it. I love my cat, too. But when a cat know what it’s doing, it knows what it’s doing. If it knew that it couldn’t win the fight, then it would have left.

Have any of you read “Where the Red Fern Grows”? Do you thing just because those dogs died that the kid was a bad pet owner? I’m too lazy to go anywhere with my dogs and I know that they’ed rather be in the mountains hunting raccoons.

The only stupid thing about that lady is that she left trash on the porch, in bear country! :(

      • Mei Mei says:

Assuming that a cat probably has the intelligence level of a child or an adult is not a very valid argument. Domesticated animals are not prepared to deal with “wild” encounters. That being said, if you have an indoor cat that is de-clawed and domesticated, I very much doubt you would let it outside to fend off a bear. If it was a feral cat it would have probably been smart enough to hide or just leave the bear alone. However, defending territory is usually innate in most creatures, and this cat may have jumped to the front lines to defend his home.

  70. Vincent says:

I won’t repeat what everyone said, because I agree, bad parenting+pet ownership if we don’t get at least explanations like “the cat already chased that precise bear 10 times before”.

BUT. I want to point that it would be a cool video for youtube. I enjoyed watching a bear vs cat confrontation, as a feline lover. I’ve never seen a feline using that technique. Usually felines are the biggest of the two in a confrontation. It’s no lolcat video, but it’s def an interesting one.

  71. velcrotrainer says:

am i the only one that noticed that the kitty cat didn’t exit the house through the window the woman opened, but rather was already outside?

she opened the window so that she could shoo the little bear off of her porch and that seemed to coincidentally be the moment the cat shot into view and went territorial.

  72. ranger rick says:

None of this is funneh at all. Only a fool lols at this. The bear is stealing food off a porch – this is the kind of thing that gets them killed. They see hoomans as a food source and become more and more bold. Then they have to be killed to protect the idiot hoomans who encouraged the behavior. Oh yeah, it’s real cute until they start ripping it out of your hands or break into your house.

Also teh Kitteh is under a death sentence. Pretty soon it’s going to be bear dinner as soon as Yogi there grows up.

(this is about as funny as the the idiots who feed/let alligators get their garbage)

Call animal control and keep your garbage inside until pickup. Keep teh kitteh inside too or teh next vid will be bear eats kitteh carcass. Nom, nom.

  73. Roderick says:

    Bear: Oh shi… RUN!

  74. nycat says:

Kitteh iz mah role modelz naw.

  75. kayo says:

Interesting video if you don’t listen to the audio–horrifying regardless if there was no way to constrain the outside kitteh. Certainly an argument for not allowing your cats to go outdoors, especially where there are predators, especially bears. However, listening to the twit laughing at her cat going after the bear and calling for the small child to come watch turned my stomach. Why not just send the kid out there to join in? My cats have always been like our children and if a child ran after a bear or any wild animal, I’d be scared to death about the outcome. Some people have no sense at all.

  76. op_sMama says:

Brave kitteh does not lik bearz on hur porch!

  77. Christine says:

The name she’s using for the cat is a generic one for a female cat in Quebec. It’s possible that isn’t her cat at all, since she is essentially calling it “Kitty”

She is also saying, “vas-y Memine!” which could be taken to mean, “go get it!” but it could also be taken to mean “run for your life!”. She doesn’t start laughing until the child does.

Also, her yelling could be her yelling to scare the bear.

Finally, as someone who grew up with black bears roaming around the back yard, I have seen half a dozen family pets (including a little white toy poodle/bichon frise cross) chase off a black bear and nobody I know has ever lost a pet to a black bear. When we had a cougar in town I think some people lost a couple goats, but that was different!!

    • Hank H says:

      Those are good points, Christine.
But a lot of the posters here seem to enjoy wallowing in self-righteousness and absolute condemnation (she’s a maniac! she’s pure evil! she should be forbidden to own a cat! she should be forbidden to live near the woods! she should have been forbidden to bear children, by–you know, us, because we have the right to forbid random Quebecois from bearing children, and in fact should have been notified the night she and her husband were planning to conceive, so we could approve or disapprove of their methods!)

Any possible interpretations of the woman’s actions that don’t allow for as great a horrified smugness probably won’t be appreciated.

  78. cakeislie says:

You guys need to be more educated before criticizing this video. Bears are naturally DEFENSIVE. When a mama bear attacks a human, it is b/c she thinks that person is a threat to the cub. In this case, the bear is completely aware that HE is the invader stealing another animal’s food.

Bears don’t go around breaking into houses and killing people for no reason, though they easily could. They are also easily scared and attack only when they feel threatened. If you watch your Discovery Channels, you know that if a bear approaches you (and you are not stalking its cub), wave your arms wide and make a lot of noises so you appear big, and the bear should move away

    • cakeislie says:

additionally, who are you guys to criticize how this woman is handling the bear? This woman lives in an area w/ a lot of bears and probably encountered bears many times (and maybe even has a shotgun ready). I bet most of you guys haven’t even been into the wilderness behind your keyboards all day.

      • alex says:

They’re all so quick to jump to conclusions but not once do they ever conclude that perhaps momma is more prepared than any of these posters could have been.

        • ranger rick says:

A lackadaisical attitude like this kind is what ends up getting bears killed in order to protect humans who are foolish enough to leave their garbage out in bear country. I live in bear country and I own livestock, I carry a rifle when there is bear sign near my house. And yeah, bears DO break into houses and barns when they get desensitized to humans. It’s happened twice in my area in the past two years. Each time the bear had to be killed because now they know people’s houses are a food source.

The same thing happens in Fa when people think it’s funny to watch the ‘gators eat their garbage.

          • cakeislie says:

Yes, bears can get desensitized by humans… but as you can see in this case the bear is scared of a cat.

But I do agree, that the garbage should’ve been put a little bit farther or in a bear-proof container.

            • kate says:

Being afraid of the cat does not change the fact that the bear is in real danger. One experience with a small animal is all it needs to learn that it can rip the cat to shreds. One lean winter and it will go right through the door for food it knows is close by.

The safest, happiest bear is one that we never see.

      • kate says:

If the homeowner knows anything about living in a bear area, she knows to put her garbage in a bear-proof container. That is was sitting on the porch says two things. Either she is ignorant of some of the basic bear country rules, or she was baiting it intentionally for a “cute” video.

      • saviorofanimals says:

Oh that you would be wrong. Regardless basic laws apply to everyone, and this woman broke several. I will always defend my pets, and have the scars to show it.

    • Tanya says:

cakeislie, you don’t seem to understand. The term “defensive” does not connote pacifism or gentleness. To DEFEND is to respond to an attack, to protect. It is likely to be a violent response.

The cat was lucky the bear didn’t decide to defend itself.

      • kate says:

Dead on, Tanya. Defensive behavior is one of the most dangerous and unpredictable behaviors *because* the animal is in a high stress state. It could decided in an instant that avoidance isn’t working and overt aggression is the only way to end the conflict.

Furthermore, body language can only tell you what is happening at that instant, not an instant or two forward in time. If someone working with animals (wild or domestic) the quickest way to end up in intensive care is to assume that a.) the current encounter will always be like past encounters and b.) that behaviors won’t change in an instant. Indeed, the worst injuries often come from the animals considered most “solid” and “predictable.”

  79. The Crapture says:

Wow, i’ve never seen half of these names here before…is there some secret care-troll network that makes them spring out of the woodwork to hector everybody about how stupid we are or how poor our judgment is or what terrible people we are for applauding a cat making a f**king bear GTFO its yard? Srsly, this thread is like a minefield of carefully cultivated butthurt and well rehearsed outrage.

To quote Bill Murray from STRIPES: “Lighten up, Francis”

  80. Marionette says:

    Vas-y mimine!

  81. Greg says:

    Vas y mimine !! Vas-y mimine!

  82. Skye says:

I agree it was a very brave little kitty. It was also snack sized for a bear hunting noms. I was very scared for the brave kitty, even though I know Cheezburger folk only post happy endings . Bear’s foot was nearly the size of the kitty, and even if he didn’t grab him and carry him off, bear coulda slapped him really hard and squashed kitty like a bug. Personally, I’d have been out there trying to make all the noise of a brass band and tried to save my cat.

Honestly, woman, hasn’t anyone told you about locking up your garbage in bear territory? It’s a major issue.

  83. kate says:

I will freely admit that it is pretty funny to see a cat take on a bear and run it off. That said, this encounter should never have happened. Trash should never have been left accessable to the bear. The bear is associating human habitation with food and will slowly become less afraid every time it successfully forages at a residence. Eventually, it will be unafraid when it encounters a human being which will lead to a dangerous confrontation.

Although animal control often tries to relocate habituated wild animals the end result is most frequently euthanasia. It is very hard to extinguish this behavior.

When I see this video I don’t just see a cat in danger of death or a child at risk of seeing a domestic animal ripped to pieces, I see the first step in a chain of events that will inevitably lead to the death of a wild animal. The bear will die for no other reason than being a bear who is *trained* to come to humans and has no way of knowing when it stops being a game and starts being a threat. That situation is flat out wrong.

Break the chain. Don’t feed wild animals.

  84. momto6kittehs says:

ai lubs teh bebbeh laffin! :D

  85. Blaaaargh!!!!… For a minute I thought I really WAS on CO…. almost expected Ed. (Teho) to show up and restore order…. Someone on one of the comments said “don’t type like that…stop it!”…Yuu meen liek tihs??? Sorree, Hal, Ai can’t duu taht…..!!

  86. NNY says:

I would have ran out and got my cat…not held the video camera and watch it! I know it was a cub but what if the momma bear CAME OUT! Luckily my kittehs are scared of squirrels even so they wouldn’t even try

  87. Floatcat says:

I have a friend whose kitten put a bear cub up a tree; both kitten & cub were too young to really know what the balance of power really was. He has also lost a couple cats to coyotes, cougars or bears over the last 40 years, so it can be a real coin toss to see who ‘wins’ and who ‘looses’. He kept the cats inside 90% of the time, but sometimes around dusk, the cats would be reluctant to come in, and cross paths with some early nocturnal creatures.I think the very young child laughed only because the mother laughed and would remember only the emotion and not the incident if the cat had been mauled. I don’t think the woman let the cat out the window, it was already outside, as the cat was at a full gallop when it entered the frame. If the family was dumb enough to leave garbage and a kitten outside, statistically, it will just be a matter of time for something really bad to happen. It is a delicate balance between sheltering a child and teaching a child about real life consequences. Not an easy thing for any parent – no matter how educated or ignorant they may be.

  88. Ze says:

I think the swatting at the nose was cute, but yes, I know I’d be worried about my cat.
Have to give the cat some credit though, I know my cats are defensive of territory, but they’re smart enough to go when it’s dangerous. They growl all the time when they don’t know who’s at the door, but if something growls and chases them they run up a tree or under a deck.
So if I saw something like this, if my cat wasn’t scared, I don’t think I’d be too worried. I just hope this cat is as smart.

  89. Brianna says:

    ****************************************
I hold nothing against the maker of this video. For real. I do not however think that this video is appropriate for ICHC. If it seems like I am “targeting” this video, I apologize. I do not have the time in the day to watch all of them and screen for unescessary violence. I want to see cats eat melons and chase vacuum cleaners. NOT almost get killed by bears.

This video is innapropriate for ICHC. If you agree with me please post a comment asking to have it taken down. If enough people do this, I will voice my concern direclty to the people of ICHC and perhaps they will humor us.

This site is about lulz. I want to lul. I did not lul at this….

    RJCold

    • Tanya says:

Brianna, I agree with you on every point you have made except one: I *do* think the make of this video is culpable. She ought to know how wrong this is. She should seriously not be allowed to have pets–and probably not kids, either. That may sound harsh, but think of it this way: this video could very easily have been Exhibit A in a criminal case, if things had turned out differently.

ICHC: Take this video down. It is disgusting. I don’t understand why it is on your site. Maybe you put it up because you weren’t really paying attention. But if you don’t take it down, you are validating abuse as “entertainment.”

    • Mei Mei says:

      Total agreement here.

  90. Joan says:

so she let the cat out…intentionally? What do you want to bet that the day the cat gets killed by the bear, or a different one she thinks is the same bear, she pitches a fit and wants the bear hunted down and killed?

  91. Wally says:

Oh great, now every moron in Canada is going to see a bear and say, “HEY! Remember that awesome video from icanhaz? Yeah, put the cat out, quick!”

This video isn’t funny at all. PunditKitchen is invading cheezburger with unfunnyness!

  92. Vagrarian says:

OK…my analysis of this controversial video…

Doesn’t look like the cat was let out. The window is opened, and then the cat goes streaking by. It doesn’t add up, the way the cat goes running past, it doesn’t look as if it jumped from that window, and probably was already outside. People seem to be thinking that “window opened, then cat streaks by, so obviously they let the cat out” but my viewing of it does not support that conclusion.

I saw a propane tank, and a pile of stuff (a car seat and what appears to be some sort of plastic bin) out by the car. If these folks actually LIVED in bear country, they should be habituated to putting their trash in a secure container. The fact that it’s NOT makes me wonder if this isn’t a vacation rental and the folks making the video simply don’t know any better. They may have just arrived (hence the stuff left by the car) and put out some stuff left over from their trip when the bear came along. The cat may belong to the house rather than the people who took the video. There’s too much there that’s questionable for me to assume they’re poor parents or pet abusers or horned fiends who eat kittens for breakfast or whatever people seem to be thinking of them.

    • Other says:

This is the most sensible analysis of the situation I have seen so far, and I agree. As for the open window, I suspect she was trying to let the cat in, assuming it would try to escape indoors, not attack the bear. Note that the cat comes streaking out of the right side of the picture the moment the window slides open. It probably thought “good, back-up is here!”

As for not taking the kid away? That was a pretty shocking, surprising encounter. I have to admit that despite my exellent credentials as good mother, responsible citizen and draconic protector of the small, weak and soft, I might have been equally fascinated by the event, and laughing just as nervously.

  93. critterperson says:

No matter who they are or the situation – you don’t let children see potentially bloody-death sequences – and laugh. Seems like they were anticipating the bear, hence, should have had the cat inside…even if you rent in bear country, you go into the area with some specific knowledge…unless you have been completely isolated from today’s world. City dwellers know that open garbage intices rats, country living and towns hide “stuff” from racoons and night predators. Am happy np\ot to be related to her; would have to leave her outside with the bears.

  94. jaguargrin says:

I love that this mother has JUST taught her child that playing with bears is fun and ok, as is letting the cat outside when a bear is around.

And by love…I mean, obviously natural selection will take care of this family…ironically, probably in the form of a bear.

  95. Giga says:

Lolyogi is funnyer then the avreage bear
Lolyogi is always in the the lolranger’s hair

  96. Kate says:

You guys are from the city aren’t you…. Cause country kids deal with wildlife a lot. Like Last year we had a cougar problem and one of our gurd dogs got eaten. It sucked, but we’re all okay. And you’d also know that baby black bears are more timid and less likely to attack. And even if it did, I wouldn’t risk my life for a cat. Nor will the bear break through brick and somehow hurt the people in the house.

    • kate(different) says:

Yeah, losing outdoor pets to wildlife is a common country problem. I’ve lost about ten barn cats in the past seven years.

I wouldn’t count on bear attack probabilities, though. I’ve dealt with too many animals, wild and domestic, to assume anything anymore.

The problem that I see is that the bear is learning where a source of food is located. It may be young now, but it is going to get a whole lot bigger over time and bolder with more success. A brick wall might stop it, but doors and windows won’t.

I imagine, were we to put a tracking collar on this bear and assuming nothing changes in its environment, we would see it foraging regularly around human homes. Extrapolating further out over time, we would see it lose its fear of humans and become aa threat. The final event would be the story on the evening news about a rogue bear breaking into a home and being shot by animal control.

  97. Craig says:

You know, I normally do not comment on here, but I honestly feel I should. First off, she did not push the cat out the window. I watched that clip over and over several times, on a slower motion. She turns the handle to open the window to yell out, a few seconds later, cat comes running from somewhere to the right of said window at full speed. This means the cat was already outside. I am not saying I agree with what happened, but just thought I would make sure that fact was there.

Point blank though, this video SHOULD be removed. I do not see the comedy in this. You are right, I totally disagree with the parenting on this. I am also willing to bet that most of the people who say “Let the kid see it and learn” are not actual parents. I may have agreed with you a few years ago when I did not have kids, saying whatever, no harm done. Now? I have kids, I have cats. I am more then aware that if one of my cats was to be killed by a bear in front of one of my kids, I *KNOW* it would be traumatic. I know it would not be a good thing and I know it would not be the proper way to learn about death. If a cat dies naturally, yes, they will learn about death.

If you all are so hell bent on saying, Whatever, let the kid watch. Why not go take your kid to watch your pet nearly get mauled by an animal. Go throw it in the lion cage at a zoo. They can learn that way right? Seriously, think about what you people are saying. I know the woman did not throw the cat out there, but she sure as hell didn’t try and protect that child by any means.

Remember, when a child is that young, the pet is closer to being a brother or best friend. Would you let your child watch a human get killed? Would you let them watch a situation that could possibly kill a family member, brother, sister? Of course you wouldn’t. Why is that acceptable here?

I don’t mean to beat the horse dead here, but living in that kind of area, they should store their trash better. The woman should not have let her child watch. This video is not all that amusing and not a good representation of what this site is about IMO.

  98. b78 says:

How did that cat get out? Was that person standing near an open window, just looking at the bear and doing nothing to secure the window? Or did that person open the window to let the cat out?

    Jesus Christ.

I found that video chilling. Kitty is brave and very lucky. The owner is an idiot.

  99. Tylee says:

This is a very brave kitty but the bear could have easily killed the cat which is NOT funny in the slightest. This family obviously do not care about their pets. Maybe a cultural thing!

  100. samakins mom says:

kitteh should have sent mum outside to scare away the bear while he and the baby stayed safe inside and laughed

  101. m in athens says:

Somebody’s mom is a total idiot. If you live where there are bears, don’t leave your trash out. It might be cute when it’s a cub, not so much with a big one. That kind of crap gets people hurt and bears killed.

  102. kIb59 says:

Never mind, I figured it out. This is a cat lover or cat video site. Now I understand the neurotic posts.

  103. Sparrow says:

What bothers me most about this is that the woman left the garbage out in an area that obviously has bears. That bear is now a dead bear. It may not be dead at this instant, but it will be soon. It will become a problem bear and someone is going to have to deal with it. This is not a funny video.

That cat was put in a state of extreme stress and fear because of careless owners too lazy to deal with their garbage properly, who seem to find this kind of situation “entertainment”. It’s not funny, it is sad.

  104. Marie says:

Oh for the luv of crying out loud, Pete and others! Would you all just relax? This was FUNNY! Animals, and people for that matter, usually don’t want to get into any trouble. Obviously that was the bear’s case, he knew the cat was bluffing and didn’t want any trouble. The cat was just being a show off. Animals who are allowed to be in touch with their wild nature usually know when real trouble is about to brew. Besides this is just a little bear, not a baby; probably just an adolescent. Get a grip, this video is funny.

    • Josie says:

Marie, that is sick. Shame on you.

    • Kaylana says:

That is sick, and anyone who thinks they can predict the behavior of a wild animal just by looking at its body language is a Darwin award waiting to happen.

Good god, what has happened to our society that we now coddle to people who have not an ounce of good sense or respect towards other living things?

  105. Rebecca says:

WORST MOTHER OF THE YEAR AWARD!!!! Someone should call protective services for this poor child

  106. Mei Mei says:

Are you kidding me??? I would never let my cat outside to fend off a bear! The bear could have easily killed, or even worse, eaten the poor cat! Granted, this time the cat did win, but what happens the next time when the bear has had enough? For those of you who say ‘relax’ maybe you should try putting yourself in the same situation. Would you do that to your own cat? Maybe your dog?
As for the parenting, this lady is a complete moron. She’s giggling and laughing away, thinking this is just a great show. Did she think twice about leaving garbage outside, in the open, with bears roaming around? Probably not, and like everyone else said, the bear is now as good as dead.
Please, remove this video. I was not impressed with it at all and was stunned watching what was unfolding.

  107. jaj says:

Wow, that ketteh got some brass.

  108. Ronald says:

I have been a wildlife biologist for the past 20 years. We have a saying “A fed bear is a dead bear”, because this kind of human behavior is what encourages and habituates bears to seek out food from homes. With a few successful raids like this, the bear gets more bold and agressive, and generally the final result is an injured person (or worse) and the game wardens have to come out and kill the bear. Very sad. I am glad the cat was OK this time. I don’t have a lot of hope for the bears future. I wish the video had a disclaimer or something, make it a teachable moment. Feeding bears or allowing them to steal your garbage is a very bad idea. Cute video, sure, but with a tragic downside.

    • megan says:

what you just said reminds me of this thing we were talking about in hunters saftey a while back. we were talking about why you shouldent feed a bear. Well anyway this guy who once was in yellow stone natinal park or glaciar natinal park or some park like that he was bringing bears into the basement of a log cabin and feeding them…the bears kept coming back but by the time he was done he had i think it was 20 or 30 bears coming back reling on him to feed him. well park rangers found out about it and he had like a realy big fee he had to pay for it then he had to move out of montana….i think he called himself the bearman. sorry if some info is wrong we talked about it like 8 months ago. :P

  109. slicshuter says:

Who knows what could have happened with the child watching.

    I once saw a video-now removed:

This was attempted by a different family. They threw the cat outside when there was a bear. The cat already tried to run back but the stupid woman was in a diferent room trying to video, but she couldn’t see the cat. She immediately ran to the front door to get the cat, but once she got there she could see the bear’s back turned, with the cat in it’s mouth, it walked into the forest with the cat still squirming. No doubt it wasn’t seen again.

  110. slicshuter says:

I could hear the children crying and screaming in the background. I couldn’t eat.

  111. Lovely says:

Creepy as hell, the woman in the video laughing during this situation….

  112. gardencat says:

Whether people rent or own is no excuse for stupidity/lack of common sense re leaving garbage outside in bear country. Not even making an effort to create as much noise or distraction to (hopefully) frighten off bear and attempting to protect/save cat is equally stoopit and irresponsible. Prioritizing a video of the event, w/no concern for the cat’s welfare as well as potentially traumatizing her baby is reprehensible.

And for those who keep preaching to “Get over it. It was funny”…why are you people even visiting this site? I was under the impression ICHC is devoted to enjoying and appreciating our animals (cats especially). What part of BEAR vs. cat don’t you understand? It’s a freaking bear upwards of probably 200lbs – cub or no cub- by comparison to a tiny, maybe 10lb cat. Where is the humor in that potentially devastating outcome? Now I know the insensitive cretins Hollywood panders to with their idea of humor is placing the premise of a small dog or cat in jeopardy in one of their “alleged” comedies.

  113. keepin says:

Yet another great example of why people who care about their cats keep them indoors… and people who don’t, film them in peril.

  114. shimacat says:

Good grief. That bear could have ripped your cat to pieces, and you were laughing? You shouldn’t be keeping animals as you obviously haven’t a clue how to look after them.

  115. Kai Davies says:

    lolcatz ar alwais dee braivest!!!!

  116. Kai Davies says:

lolcats are always braver shimicat. you arent thinking!! :)

  117. iovemaui says:

this is soooooo funny i wish i had a cat like that!!! lol

  118. Marion says:

I don’t understand any of this. The woman was laughing!!!! Why was she laughing. Didn’t she understand that her cat could have been killed? And who are the idiots who think it’s okay for a kid/baby/toddler to see that?

  119. Jo says:

Notice at the beginning, the woman let the cat out the door-siccing it on the bear. Then laughing uproariously. Disgusting. I’m glad the cat wasn’t killed.

  120. Irish says:

So I didn’t read all 300+ comments on this thread, but how many of you who are all bent out of shape actually live in bear country, around bears vs. how many of you have seen “When Bears Attack” on fox? Also, that cat is clearly an indoor/outdoor cat. Not my fat and lazy indoor kitteh. I’m sure it has encountered bears before. And lastly, this and every other baby/animal pic or vid that has a elebenty-billion comments… keep in mind that this is a few seconds of a story that started way before and continued after this video. There is an entire context that you all don’t have and we can only speculate at. None of you have all the facts. What moments of your lives would look terrible taken out of the surrounding context? Stop being so high and mighty.

  121. Jay says:

Is anyone concerned for the cat!!!! Why set up the camera open the door so the cat can go out and then laugh while filming it for entertainment. Your fake calls for it to come back are see through, shame on you.

  122. Nitrokitty says:

“Look man, I don’t want no trouble, I’m just gonna take the garbage and go… we cool, man? We cool, right?”
