  1. Maggie says:

Just a nasal kitty. No face, no nose.. what else do you expect a cat like that to sound like…

    • Mira8 says:

Those smush face kittehs make me sad. :(

      • kafleen says:

yesh. dey bred trubbulsum, ifinkso. :(

      • Exactly… No wonder the poor kitty can’t miaow… it’s more inbred than the British Royal Family.

Shame on breeders that force cats to look like that. :¬(

      • lovebird says:

Me too. First I wanna cry, and then I get mad. What the #$%& is with modern breeding of cats (or dogs) with smushed faces?!!! All the reasons I’ve heard do not stand up to the fact that they do these animals a huge disservice by purposely making them have physical deformities. Then they post vids and pics here that show these sad critters unable to do normal things like see what they’re eating, eat without getting food on their whiskers, breathe with their mouths shut, or the above, and think it’s funny or cute. >(

      • Cat (yes, really) says:

Me too. Seriously, some of the stuff we’ve done to domesticated animals is just evil. This is one such example. Cats like that can barely breathe, let alone make any sort of normal feline vocalizations. Ugh.

        • Bailey says:

Actually, cats like this don’t have as many breathing problems as you might think. My mom has one, and it’s only problem is that she’s like a kid with a stuffy nose all the time and she snorts and snores. She also drinks out of the faucet because sticking her whole face in a bowl of water kinda sucks for her, lol. But her health is pretty good, and breeding cats for their looks isn’t evil. Would call breeding sled dogs for certain traits that make them better sled dogs evil too? They just breed for looks, and the “rejects” of the breed just go to homes and don’t get bred, and people love them if they’re up to code or not.
The meow is another issue, not having to do with the face. It’s not common, but I’m sure if it was a problem this person is taking good care of their cat.

          • cam says:

HE CAN MEOW!!!! Check out winston at four four- he is a legendary cat. As Rich at fourfour explained this cat has a croaky voice when he has just woken up.

          • Lucky says:

“and it’s only problem is that she’s like a kid with a stuffy nose all the time and she snorts and snores. She also drinks out of the faucet because sticking her whole face in a bowl of water kinda sucks for her”
What you’re describing are breathing problems. Breathing problem = heath problems. Pets bred for their looks have lots of heath problems that is an easily researched fact. Sled dogs are working dogs and can not be compared to an animal bred purely for aesthetics

          • HistoryMaker says:

There is a flaw in your premise.
Breeding a better sled dog has a purpose.
The “better sled dog ” would be good at his job and well suited to survive in it’s environment.
What is the purpose of breeding a smushed face cat? Just to have a freaky looking pet?
From a survival standpoint these guys would be the rejects. The poor things should be neutered not bred.
It’s mean to intentionally propagate a useless trait that makes the animal’s life harder.

          • wombot says:

That makes me angry. How would you like to spend your whole life with a stuffy nose, snorting and snoring, not being able to drink properly? I dont know if sled dogs have any health problems due to being bred that way, but I doubt it – they look similar to the animal they started out being (wolves), and they are bred to be strong and healthy.

          • Fee says:

So… you’re really serious by telling us that having a stuffy nose, snoring and snorting and be unable to DRINK properly would be “really good health”??! Did you fall on your head or are you really that stupid?

          • Cat (yes, really) says:

“like a kid with a stuffy nose all the time and she snorts and snores.”

So basically her nasal cavities are so deformed that they can’t function properly. And how would she drink in the wild, exactly? Look for the nearest tap? She can’t even hydrate herself like a normal creature.

When this happens to humans, we give them corrective surgery so they don’t have to live with that forever. It can be only a minor disturbance but it can also be a really serious health problem.

It can cause sinus infections, choking, difficulty breathing (and thus obesity, due to inability to exercise without passing out), and snoring can disrupt sleep.

We fix this in humans. But we do it INTENTIONALLY to cats and dogs. You don’t think that’s a little messed up?

“Would you call breeding sled dogs for certain trats… evil too?”

Do any of these traits inhibit their ability to be happy and healthy?

To be honest, if we were starting all over again, yes, I’d be against domestication of animals. But they’re here, and they don’t do well in the wild, so we care for them. And I love my cat to death. But I would rather she were a mountain lion like nature intended. I just don’t have that choice.

My grandmother has one of those dogs that’s been bred to the point where it looks like a rat that’s had its face broken. She has never been able to breathe through her nose. She has chronic sinus infections. Her hips are so disfigured that they started causing her pain when she was two years old. And she is a perfect “breed standard.”

The acceptability of “breeding for looks” ends where serious health complications begins.

          • Rea says:

they do it for one reason only, and that’s for money
if no one would buy them they would not breed them

        • Mindy says:

I have a tuxedo cat that can’t meow.. poor baby tries, but he just never could make a decent sound (unless you step on his toes or something on accident)

          • Amy says:

I have a tuxedo cat that does that too… I think he just chooses to be quiet lol because he can be loud when he really wants to be… just like you said when you step on his toes.. or in the car he wails louder than any creature his size I have ever seen LOL

    • NeilH says:

Agreed. Sad and not really funny.

      • TLH says:

Very funny. Here’s the same cat:

        • Teal says:

sounds fine to me! must have just had a cold. Lots of persians are brachycephalic (flat faced) Part of the breed. Winston doesnt have it as bad as some i’ve seen, and cat fanciers and laypersons agree that too smushed looks bad.

        • Lavinia says:

You think this is funny? I don’t understand. This cat is crying, and that’s not funny. I wasn’t able to watch the video for longer than a minute. I was much too angry and much too sad.

    • Seddah says:

That’s so sad =____= Poor kitty.

    • Mira8 says:

WHAT!?!?!! Oh now I’m really depressed. I don’t know about cat breeding–I thought this was a form a birth defect, like a cleft palate in humans. People breed cats to be like this ON PURPOSE???!!! Yeah now I’ve heard everything.

  2. Chessie says:

    squeak?

    • bunnyrut says:

i had a kitteh that squeaked like that.

      • varuna says:

I had a kitteh like that too, but the more he tried, he could do it! He was like “me-heh”…he was my sexy kittymon but he passed a few months ago. I miss him :’(

        • Zephriel says:

Our old catguy was similar. By the time he reached 17 or so, he would open his mouth and nothing would come out except the occasional squeak. He passed away about two years later.

He was a gorgeous long-haired black cat (non-Persian– he had a normal cat face) who, for lack of a better description, looked the way James Earl Jones sounds.

      • alita says:

My first cat couldn’t meow either when we first got him (4wo stray eaten half to death by rats) and you could tell by the look on his face he was trying so hard! not a peep came out of his little mouth, for the first 3 days. Then I took him to the vet cause the wound on his tail was infecting, and the vet gave him a HUGE shot of antibiotics. and with that injection, came his first hiss and meow :D BTW, 2 years later, he’s the biggest talker of all the cats I know!

      • ch1llboy says:

I had one as well who meowed silent or croaked and squealed like this but didn’t meow till I played videos to it off the net. when it heard the right sounds it could mimic it. wouldn’t last more than an instant. It was an only cat so somewhere along the way I think it forgot how to do it properly.

  3. Snow says:

Not really fail. My cat does this to say hello.
And yeah, faceless kitties have this because of the way they’re bread. Airway issues and such.

  4. StrayCatz says:

My Misty that died just before Christmas, couldn’t meow either. She could just make a low meow at times. But she knew how to get my attention. Cute kitty, you have.

  5. Rattipuss says:

Kitteh haves bedder fings tu du den me-ow!

  6. Cookies Van Helsing says:

    Snap Crackle Pop?

  7. Tarantino says:

    Aww.. poor Winston.

  8. Elisabeth says:

I grew up with kitties who had usual voices for their striped shorthair variety.

One of them particularly, would give a silent meow when she was relaxed and wanted to say something, but felt that a voiced meow would just be too much effort.

  9. hissy says:

Is dis da kitteh dat swallod da burd dat swallod da spidr dat swallod da fly?

  10. mamarosa says:

    Winston haz the perfect!

    We luv yu Winston!

  11. star_gazer_453 says:

    Kitten kan no haz me-ow.

  12. 3LittlKitties says:

Watch out! Dis is de dreaded silent-meow! Never knoes wher dis kitteh is, until…

    POUNCE! :)

Needs a bell-a-jingle on dis kitteh’s collar. Ifinkso.

  13. RuffTuff says:

lol god bless him and his flat little mug

  14. bodo says:

    Kitteh haz teh larynj…laringi…larnigij…kan’t tok.

  15. rick says:

we had a rescued feral kitty who didn’t meow for like a year after we got him. the first time he tried to meow, no sound came out. He only chirped for a while like that too. Allegedly in the wild, kitties are not too vocal for fear of attracting the wrong kind of attention.

Thanks for making me remember the Scout. He was a good kitteh.

  16. Sandrainia5kittehs says:

Tuk S/O/Spouse’s kitteh tu da veturinainz tudai for her shotz n yearly checky-up n tu see whai she actin liek she iz blind Siameze kitteh. Result iz she needz glassez is so short sighted shez can barely see 4 inchuz offa her noze. They not maek glassez 4 kittehs or contackyz eithur tu fix. So now we jus gotta maek sure eberyting iz allus in same places fur her to find. Iz kinda ironic as S/O’s last gf, kitteh’s original mommy, iz also blind, so S/O haz lotsa experienze in dealin wif this azza prolem. Kitteh iz 13 yrz old so we jus keep her safe n happie for alla time she haz left wif us. she knows how to get around in her chosen space n we jus gotta make shure other kittehs not scare her into places she might get lost in inna houze. She haz her recliner to sleep on n fud/water dishes near it jus 4 her n litter pan close tu uze so she can get around her world jus fine. She has her 2 hooman slaves to care for her tu. Otherwize vet says she iz good healthy kitteh, 13 n no toof prollems or gummy dizeaze or even tartar on toofs. I gots alla kittehs sum catnip inna buds an they are go crazie 4 it alla time, try tu rip it outta the box even that I hide it in.

    • The Crapture says:

glad to hear your kitteh is otherwise in teh gud shaypes, funkshuning eyebLOLs notwithstanding… every kitteh should has a hoomin liek u

    • nightshayde says:

It sownds liek ur kitteh iz blessed to haz pplz dat unnerstand & dat will tayk wunnerful caer uv hur.

      Yay fur wunnermus hooman slaves!

    • nicewitch says:

Got frew teh neks sebben anna haff yeers jus fien, eben up an daon stares til ai puttid bebbeh gaets up tu keeping hur saef (an keep mii frum hassing teh hart attaks!)

  17. Brit-chan says:

whenever one of my kitties is purring, he kinda sounds like that, but not quite as bad.

  18. The Crapture says:

My late Shadow-kitteh used to do the same thing, just squeaking and whispering unless she was really, REALLY mad about something and then she’d say “EeeyOOO!”…and because she was all Tonya knew, Tonya never had a true “meow” until Spooky and the assorted Spooklets came along. Tonya still mostly says things like “nyat!” and “geep!” “hmmph” and usually only gives me a nice “MrrrEEow?” when i scratch the spot just behind her ears

  19. radleyas says:

    Winston!!!

  20. Chaikhe says:

Iz good meow. Hoomuns juz can’t heer ut – it tu hi fer dem. Iz sikrit meow uv lolcats.

  21. Rosie says:

Awww, it almost looks like he’s opening his mouth without even trying. Maybe he’s just lazy, haha. Cute kitteh!

  22. wombat says:

My Boots used to sound like this, just a useless “ack, ack” sort of noise. His snoot was perfect so I don’t think it’s to do with that. The feral theory may have something in it – my boy was a rescue too

    • Both mai feral (formerly, ov corse) kitties hav verree nice meows. But there muther wuzn’t reelee feral – just a hauscat hoo no longer seemed to hav a hoam.

Ai hav herd, tho ai donut noe if it iz troo – taht kitties do nawt meow to eech uther. It iz teh way they speek to us.

      • gammacat says:

ai has herd that tew! Mai orinj boi si verra gud at demanding things with various meows! Shadow only meows when she is upset. She has a wai of just luking at me (or poking me with her paws) to get what she wants!

      • momto6 says:

I’ve heard that too. There are exceptions, of course. A mother cat calls her kittens with a meow, though it’s a special call.

    • Syri says:

My Pussums iz also been rescude frum da outadoors but he hollrz so loud he waiks da ded. I wishz he might shuzzup at 5am sumtims. I been teeching him ta uze his innadoors voyce. But is has been long time wif littl rezults. At leest hez lotsa snooglez an’ no biteys anymoor.

  23. Desi says:

My cat (fairly normal mog of no particular breed) has a really hoarse meow. She sounds like she’s got a sore throat and always has.

    • The Crapture says:

Reminds me of something Miles Davis said as a little interstitial joke on a show that David Sanborn had on late night TV years and years ago.

Deadpan of him leaning against a wall, camera zooms in and pans up to his face as he works the valves on his horn
“My name is Miles Davis, and i’ve had a sore throat for over 40 years”

    • nyghtwind says:

Mai kitteh meows like a sheep! She alwaiys has.

      Mea-eh-eh-eh-eh

  24. Noreen says:

Once upon a time, I received a Dieffenbachia plant as a gift. My Tiger insisted on chewing the leaves. This plant is also known as a ‘dumb cane’ because it’s sap can cause paralysis…Tiger tried to meow for an hour or so before a real sound came out. That plant didn’t stay in the house any longer, although Tiger lived to 15 years! Now, no real plants in my home at all!

  25. Alzuun says:

I had a kitteh like that once. I called her Rusty because she shounded like a rusty fence <3

  26. willy boy says:

kittehs haz vawlyoom kuntrol? mush fined wun fro da williboi………

  27. Zutto says:

I iz seen kittehs hoo’s hoomans removd der meow-boxes so tat de are nut ann…anoy..de dunt half teh hear de kittehs makin de mews. Mah vet sayz she sees it all de time.

I no dat dis kitteh is jus a flat mug kitteh and is norm for dat but it remihind me of de vet kittehs and I was not-lol. :\

    • willy boy says:

      dats horeblol!!!
aiz hurd ob peeps duin dat tu goggies butt nawt kittehs…….
prolly dat saim peeps hoo haz kittehs declawed….

      • Zutto says:

Teh vet sez dat becuz lots of gud vets DO NOT WANT to do tis, de peepz go to not-gud vets who mak de mistakes ahn she sees dem after becuz de had de horrible things inside der thruts. I dun mind sum procedures if teh owners have a legit reashon fur it ahn have tried evreh uption ahn der is nutin else to be dun aftar conulaton wit de vetz an de animul expurts. Dat makes de procedurz rare (hopefally plzthx) ahn someting a -luvin- persun doz only as lust res0rt. Sad dat a lut of de claw takez ar for convinance. Dat makes me mad. But ‘dun wanna listen to dem mew?’ Y get a kitteh at all?! Iz like gettin a burd an not want’n to hear iz song. Bettr to get de peepz a stuff’d kitteh ’cause dat iz wut de rellah want.

[Completely unrelated but I just finished drafting my pattern for my 8-bit Black Mage baby quilt and I'm happ~~~y]

        • Oh WHY do the moderators hate Caghs??? says:

People who declaw their cats for no better reason than they “don’t want the furniture scratched” should first have their fingertips amputated, and THEN get a stuffed toy and give the cat to a decent home.

You maim your cat so you can have nice furniture? Shame on you!

Different if there’s an injury that requires declawing, same as tail docking is only justified if there’s an injury.

People who maim animals for appearances or convenience are the WORST!!!

(Yeah, I know I’m going to get hate comments, always do, but I stand by what I say. I mean, how would we like it if the animals could maim us to suit them?)

          • kyevic says:

My kitteh’s nic-name is Squeaker! for the first year or two of his life he couldn’t meow. all that came out was a tiny squeak. he tried. but nothing came out. we rescued him at 2 weeks old from a stray litter (5 itteh biteh kittehs, one was already gone- tuk others to SPCA). he talks a little now, but mostly just chirps at me.

i know how everyone thinks it’s horrible to declaw their kittehs. but sometimes it is necessary.

my Squeaker got really big. he runned arown wif claws out all the time. if you hold him and he wants down he launches off you wif claws. lots of people get hurt bad. grown ups and little kids too. stitches. we tried to get him to calm down. it no werk.

so we has two options- 1. get rid of cat. dis really not an option- he is family. i no can has kids :( so Squeaker is my son.

or option 2. get cat declawed. i know it’s hard on the cat. it took him a long time to get over it. but he’s happy now and hardly notices it. he just doesn’t like to run on hard floors. fortunately we have lots of carpet.

i know you are gonna rag on me for this. but it’s teh onlee way to keep kitteh that i luv.

            • Dina says:

Did you try clipping his nails? ‘Cause my cats do the “PUT ME DOWN CLAW IN YOUR NECK” thing too, but we just clip their nails regularly and life is happy.

          • cattana says:

I agree with you wholeheartedly , so no hate mail here .

  28. Jon says:

    WINSTON RULES THE NET!

  29. Paranoimia says:

Our Mika (as seen in my avatar) is like that. He can meow perfectly well, but it only happens rarely… more often than not, nothing comes out, or it’s a broken squeak similar to the cat in this video.

He was a rescue cat. Found under a hedge with 2 others, one of which was already dead, the other ran off. Reading the comments here about other ‘feral’ cats that can’t meow, I wonder if it’s something to do with their start to life?

    • pj perry says:

Punkin does dis. She waz born on my kitchen floor. No trama no drama. Juss a liddlol skweeker.

    • Meowy Teacher says:

TRUE :) My baby Metro (he passed 3 years ago :( ) was found at one week old. I had to teach him to be a kitty. The whole darn thing. Except how to hunt, and boy could he do that! Did teach him to Meow, almost to well! :)

      • Paranoimia says:

Hmm… might have to do that, then… get on the floor and start making kitteh noises. Think I’ll wait until I’m alone in the house, though – family already think I’m a bit nutty when it comes to cats!

  30. Kitteh_Kat_Celia says:

    Whut a sweeti…. <3

  31. Juniper Jupiter says:

    Yay!! It’s Winston!!!

    And the oft-underrated Rudy!!!

  32. Kitta says:

My now Very Grand Prima Donna, who started life as a feral Kitten totally lost the plot when I played this clip. . . . . .
Started ‘chirping’ back at it, something she only does when she’s REALLY happy or REALLY annoyed. I’m guessing happy as she curled up on the sofa after and snoozed.
When she’s annoyed she torments me all night

  33. jaja says:

actually i have a cat that can miaow perfectly damn loud in the middle of the night when it wants attention, but when he gets it, he’s so overjoyed that his miaows become more of a squeal. so it could be down to happiness. or it waiting for the day to tear your face off for making it wear a santa hat.

  34. Gaby says:

    Several hair-ball coming

  35. Gabrielle says:

My cat Harmony does this. Its not a feral thing either. It is actually quite common in Persian cats, or as I like to call them, Pan-Faced Kitties, to not have a true “meow.” There is nothing wrong with him. He just has a unique “voice” so to say… like humans all have unique voices.

  36. donna says:

i have an 11 year old kitty who does this and even his vet can,t explain it…

  37. _Hawkfeather_ says:

poor kitteh he tries so hard….

  38. Ozcatmum says:

Feel sorry for dat kitteh. Does he/she know everyone laffs at the noise? Can’t help it – dats how dey are made. Cute kitteh though.
Snow – kittehs are bred, not bread – unless you are VERY hungry.

  39. Andria says:

I think this is the first time I’ve read comments and people have actually spoken English. It’s nice.

    • kafleen says:

But…>i>everybody speaks English. What we do is unusual…

      • kafleen says:

        *headdesk*
        html fail. Sigh.

        • Andria says:

It’s also really annoying. I mean, obviously I like it on pictures, but hundreds of comments completely in LOLspeak is unbearable to read.

          • KaBob says:

I agree, I usually don’t read the comments cause its too annoying.

          • Babyunagi says:

            I totally agree, Andria!

I wonder if these folks talk like that in real life, and if so, do they use a baby voice? Must be fun in meetings…

          • Cat (yes, really) says:

This. I start reading the first sentence of a comment and just give up 5 words in. Not worth the effort. Makes me see red.

There is nothing wrong with intentionally messing with the language… but that is intended for “flourish,” not as a baseline of how to speak.

          • BunnehBoo says:

I know. I haz sum limits on how much lawl-speak I can handle. I came here cauz I lurve mah squishy faced cats :-p

          • Michelle says:

Thank god. Someone else besides me who thinks the LOL-speak is annoying…

          • megs says:

            Agreed 100%

            • kitty-is-typer-happy says:

              *singsong* Thank you!

              • kitty-is-typer-happy says:

*cough… clears throat* I mean I agree with you wholeheartedly.
Sometimes I feel like I can’t post a comment because I can’t speak it and take time to translate my plain English into Lolspeek with no adult can read without spending hours translating it back into English. But I love this site and I come here as often as I can, for a little something to brighten up my day. My rating of this site is a 10 on a rating of 1-5.

And as for the cat, ooh he’s so cute I just want to pinch his little cheeks (or lake of cheeks in this case.) I kind of think it’s sad though that he can’t meow properly. But for this cat, it appears to be proper for him. ooh I just love these breeds of cats, along with the Scottish-Folds. I love those. :)

            • bluesfan473 says:

Well, then you should feel free to just look at the pictures and not read the comments. If it annoys you so much why bother? You know this is a mostly lolspeak site so what do you expect to see here? Kaithxbai.

Ai have obsrvd many kittehs feral and not. If they hear human speek from an early age they are more likely to talk (talk back!). Quite a few of the feral ones make hte silent meow or a sqweek. I’m thinking that the if I had electronic equipment that could pick up the sound the silent meow isn’t so silent. sort of like elephants that make sounds too low for us hoomans, I think the kittehs may make sounds too high for us to hear. The ones with the silent meoooow look you right in the eyse and we respond so they think we do hear them……..

    • rottiluv says:

I think you’re absolutely right. I’ve seen kittens come tumbling out of their hidey hole when mom gave the silent meow.

  41. jessipa says:

poor kitty, she may have that due to breeding but it can also hapen if shes been fixed…. my cat had a perfect meow at the shelter but when i came to pick her up after she’d been fixed…. no kitty voice, just squeaks. i guess they damaged her vocals when they intubated. 6 years old and still just squeaky, i love her lots though, she’s my precious

  53. Joshua Sasmor says:

I have a tortie (Ariel) who used to be like this. For two years she never made a sound louder than that squeak. Then her sister (Chloe) got very ill and had to be put down. When we came home from the vet without Chloe, Ariel sat at the top of the stairs and yowled all night long. She’s never been quiet since…

    humanz suck!

  70. RobynT says:

I have a cat that usually chooses not to meow. She either just opens her mouth like she’s meowing without making any noise or she makes a trill noise that her part Maine Coon heritage is known for.

We thought she couldn’t meow normally at all, until she went into heat. Initially, we were all excited, “Yay! Look, she’s meowing! Awe!” After a day of meowing and yoweling, it wasn’t so cute. She was spayed by the end of the week. We were back to mime-owing and trilling and everyone live happily ever after.

  71. paaaleeze says:

oh my gosh people, stop with the stupid cat talk. it’s irritating, especially 3 paragraphs of it!

    • CheezburgerInMahBelli says:

Ahem, it may have escaped your attention, but you are on a site that features pictures of CATS, by cat-lovers, for cat-lovers. WHAT did you THINK people would be talking about?

  72. megs says:

Some cats have had their vocal chords surgically removed because their owners don’t like it if they howl at night, or if their neighbors complained.

Then they dump them at a shelter anyway, for some other lame reason. Saw this alot when volunteering at a cat shelter.

Not saying this is what is going on with this cat, just saying……

  73. acolyte says:

  74. léa says:

oh my god!! it’s Wilson and Rudy!!!
    cuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuute

  75. rachel says:

Aww, it looks like the kitty tried so hard to vocalize anything. That’s so sad, even if their is a legitimate reason why kitty cannot make loud sounds.

I want to go find my kitty now and hold it.

  76. Noelegy says:

Aww, it’s Winston! And incidentally, he IS a rescue kitteh. My Oscar sounds like this, more like a rusty gate than a big orange cat.

  77. wrongui says:

It’s a Gremlin! Did u expect it to meow!?

  78. TGB says:

    Ur kitteh iz broked.

  79. Sarah says:

    That wasn’t lol, that was sad. It made me cry. ;_;

  80. myfanwy says:

Our peke-faced Persian has been known to positively *howl* (generally when we’re trying to sleep) so it’s not a Persian-specific thing. We can’t tell if he’s bored, lonely, lost, or just is trying to get an echo in the house (he’s fairly old — 16 at this point — and we don’t think he can see or hear — or has much of a sense of smell — too well any more.
The two grey tabbies meow noisely and often — generally Robin does it when he wants attention, and Marion when she wants to sit where I am (and is of the opinion that I should move. Nao!) Hubby’s old Maine Coon was definitely a triller. The tortie I used to have said “Eep”; the two current torties (one dilute and one regular) make all sorts of little vocalizations, but don’t really meow per se. Of course the brindle is only about 6 mos. old and still very kittenish — she was a stray/feral that her mama (also a tortie) brought onto our front porch last fall; we sadly had to surrender the mother to the local no-kill shelter on Wednesday, because she tormented the other cats to the point that we were having litterbox territory issues :-(
We might have also surrendered the kitten, if we’d been able to catch her, in the hopes that the two could be adopted out together (mama wasn’t much more than a kitten herself, and they’d play-wrestle together) to a no-other cats home.
Ironically, before we were able to trap them, mama sat on our windowsill and looked in one Saturday (but did not actually practice the *true* “silent meow” on us). She was actually fairly affectionate (to humans, anyway) and I’ve been a sucker for torties since I was a kid. I don’t think she was originally feral (although the kitten was at first) because most of the strays in the neighborhood run away from people, and she came right up to be petterd (at least until I went near the kitten — then she led from the right!). She just needs to be in a home where she is the only cat. (The dilute tortie, who got dethroned from being Queen of the House, slept with us Wed. night for the first time in several months). The kitten does not seem to have caused as much of a ruckus (mostly because she’s *not* trying to take over the house); she seems a bit confused that her mother has disappeared (and the other cats, being ages 5, 10 and 16, don’t wanna play when she gets too wiggly), but she also can entertain herself just fine with the many toys (some *ACTUALLY* cat toys) in the house

  81. catzmama says:

U get simeez cats, you gotta get earplugs! Deyz meowz bery loud!

  82. BrandtCooley says:

Looks just like Tik-Tok from Return to Oz

  83. Judi Wentz says:

As I watched this cute kitteh try and try and strain to meow, I couldn’t help but feel like his collar was too tight! (Although I’m sure it isn’t!)

  84. Moon says:

  85. cassie says:

  86. lali says:

    Omg! That’s Winston! I love him, I follow him on richfofo’s youtube… He’s simply awesome <3

  87. Carola says:

Clearly, this kitty is saying: Get the camera out of my face.

  88. Sobriqueteh says:

Looks like he had a translator there for a few seconds, who failed to do his duty.

  89. Ezrekia says:

    That’s heartbreaking :(

    • TLH says:

He’s just fine. Here he is in another video:

      • Skeets says:

Winston is darling, his owner is annoying. If someone has a strong point to make regarding animal welfare & well being, it would be so much better if it was made in normal-speak … not lol-speak … so those of us who can’t understand lol-speak can read it. Especially if it’s more than a sentence. I don’t know much about breeding, except I’m wholly against it for any reason … millions (millions!) of animals die because of human greed. Spay, neuter, love on em. That’s my motto. This kitty can’t breathe well, that’s obvious, and sneezing that way isn’t a good or normal thing for a cat. Put down the video camera for a second and tend to that darling little guy.

  90. miasaurusrex says:

    IT IS SO UGLY.

    • cattana says:

Maybe if he could meow , he would tell you how ugly you are, no cat is ugly humonz are cruel………. cruel is ugly

  91. Genet says:

My cat does exactly the same. Open mouth and nothing happens, just a little “meik”.
But my cat is a normal cat, not one with that face or nose. “Hauskatze” in german…

  92. Amando says:

aw, my cat used to meow like this, now mine really knows how to meow, and keeps me up all night… =/

  93. Poothycat says:

When are breeding clubs ever going to clamp down on the appalling breeding/showing practices that lead to the hideous distortion of cats’ and dogs’ faces?! This sort of thing makes me SO angry!!!

Having said that, this kitteh is simply demonstrating one of cat’s most powerful weapons – The Silent Meow!

  94. Diane says:

What is more disturbingm that the cat cannot meow, or that it is on the kitchen counter? Is there something wrong with it?

  95. Hannah says:

This is common both with that type of cat and male cats frequently have this problem; my cat Red makes those noises and he’s a ginger tom.
I’m sure the kitty’s fine but does have a funny face :)

  96. ThinkVantage says:

This is so SAD :-( :’-(

  97. Lauren says:

    No wonderz kitteh lookz grumpeh.

  98. pulch says:

  100. presetha says:

haha! funny cat and he/or she is relly cute!

  101. ash says:

Bad taste vid, basically consists of laughing at an animal bred to be a freak.

  102. maryqos says:

My old buddy Harry used to “ack” he scared the neighbor lady. Winston looks like it hurts to talk-please did you get him check out by vet?

  103. Vincent says:

Didn’t like the vid but on the subjet on inbreed creating those issues, I tend to disagree. I had (not dead, just gave to my mother to the cat could have a garden instead of being traped in an appartment) a really beautiful cat, much like tiny version of a tiger but with gray shades and it would fail meow alot, like she would do something like “Eerk !” “Eerk !”. Never “Meow”. But yeah, that cat seems to have a real voice issue, nothing funny to me.

  104. sweetgirl says:

I have the opposite problem. My half Maine Coon kitty (other half, dunno..) howls, talks, and vocalizes quite loudly. Sometimes, he doesn’t want anything but to let you know he’s there, and that’s super annoying, because then he doesn’t stop. But it’s sweet. He has started saying something that almost sounds like “Hello?” when he’s looking for us. Crazy cat.

  105. crystalinedragon says:

I used to have a cat with a normal face who had the same miaow ( or lack of) so it may not have anything to do with this cat’s face.

  106. shellmer says:

OMG I’m laughing so hard my sides hurt. I have watched this 3 times now.

  107. Sum says:

    wow…..your cat cant meow
sounds more like a monkey to me

  108. MothyJohn says:

I think this is a kitteh’s way of saying “give me water. I’m so dry I can’t talk!”

  109. Sum says:

    wow…your cat really cant meow
cause it sounds more like a monkey
    to me

  110. Roxy says:

Have any of you not heard of Persians? Persian cats have the “smushy” face look, and they are NOT inbred. They were originally bred in Iran using Turkish Angoras. They are simply different breeds of cats not specifically made to look that way, that is just how they are. Just because his face doesn’t look like most cats does not mean he is inbred. Plus, how do you people think other breeds of cats come to be? They are bred with different types so that we can have new breeds! If that didn’t happen, all cats would look the same. Yes, there could be something wrong with him but that isn’t likely. He could have an upper respiratory infection like many cats get. Or maybe he just doesn’t really meow. Did any of you ever think that? It’s funny how you all immediately think something negative of this pretty cat.

  111. vicki says:

He was saying, “Ack! My collar’s too tight!”

  112. Dan says:

I have a blue russian that does the same thing. We call her ‘The Angry Squeaker’. Hoping we can get the name in the next Watchmen movie.

  113. catatonicsleep says:

my cat does this, she’s a regular mixed up black and white domestic shorthair so i don’t think it’s because of her breeding. the only time she comes close to a meeow is when she’s in the carry cage for the vet…

  114. Fressing says:

mai tabby kitteh does teh silent mow, too, but can tahk just as loud as she plezes when she wants to

  115. Fressing says:

oh -and we call her Prinzess Squeaks-a-lot

  116. Sunni says:

I think whoever thought this was funny needs to be shot! Better yet, why doesn’t someone just reach down the throat of the bastard who sent this in and just pull on his vocal chords? This poor kittie “obviouslYy” has a problem, and it’s not a “breeding” problem! The kitty needs to go to the vet, not be put on lolcats! Shame on you!

    • catatonicsleep says:

lots of cats do this it’s not because they’re sick.

    • TLH says:

SUNNI – would you please calm the hell down? THIS IS THE SAME CAT:

    • TLH says:

So, that said, Sunni, why didn’t you read the comments above where people said they recognized this cat from YouTube and he was just fine? Are we still sick, because we know there isn’t a damn thing wrong with this cat and he DOES NOT need to go to the vet??

      • louise says:

Thanks, tlh, for putting up the videos of your cat actually meowing, and trying to brighten the sad days of some commenters–and in order to calm those people who are jumping down your throat (no pun intended). hmmm, the power of video editing. Loved the videos–with and without the meowing. I have a cat, too, who won’t meow much (a former alley kitten). i’ll have to check out your youtube of this cat that others have mentioned. Cheers!

  117. mrsthing says:

I had a “mixed breed” foundling kitty that couldn’t meow, either. If any sound came out at all, it was scratchy and faint, like this cat’s. The vet couldn’t find anything wrong. She just said, “Some cats are like that.”

  118. Yitzysmommie says:

HA! teh furst Winston video I ectewally liked! Winston, yer meow FAIL is hilarious! Winston’s BIG stuff at CO. I however am a Maru Girl.

    • SurpriseKitteh says:

Me too! I lurv Maru!!1! But this kitteh makes me sad. He wants to talk so bad and he can’t. It almost looks like it is painful for him. :(

  119. Lisa says:

Don’t get them wet, and don’t feed them after midnight.

  120. sillywhiskers says:

Kitty might be sick. Maybe some chicken broth? My kitty had a cold once and could not meow because of a sore throat and the vet said medicine wouldn’t help because it was a virus. Just keep him quiet and offer chicken broth to keep him drinking. It worked. He got all better soon. I’ve had a smoosh-faced kitty before and he meowed, breathed, ate, drank, etc. just fine. He was given to me; I don’t favor breeding them this way on purpose since some kitties like this have problems.

  121. tlou says:

Yep, can’t blame that meow on the cat’s breeding. If I had just closed my eyes and listened I would have sworn that was my cat… plain ol’ adopted from the apl shorthair cat.

She will meow her butt off when she’s distressed, but in normal conversation she sounds just like that cat and she’s ALWAYS silent meowing at me. As a matter of fact, she and I will have silent meow conversations where I’ll silent meow back and she’ll answer in kind.

Of course, all three of my cats communicate with more grunts and I don’t know what you’d call them… but none of them meow under normal circumstances. All adopted from the apl at different times. I’ve had them for 12 years now and they’ve always been this way.

  122. Tara says:

This cat is FINE. People stop taking pity! Go to the owner’s blog. He takes great care of his cat.

  123. tillycat says:

We had a cat like that – not a squished face, just a normal black-and-white shorthair cat, but he’d never learned to meow. We picked him up as an abandoned kitten at about 3 weeks old, and all the 14+ years we had him he never meowed, although he purred louder than a tractor and was the most lovig, affectionate cat we’ve ever known. I miss him….

  124. Personage says:

    Aw, poor silent maos!

I’ve known several cats that sounded exactly like this and they were natural face kitties. And my grandmother had a smooshed face persian that would talk your damn head off. Very loudly. Perfectly good cattish spoken there.

All the same, I dun like that they breed for smooshes.

  125. Giz Gunnar says:

We had a cat who meowed like this when I was little. He could meow normally when he was a kitten, but when he got full-sized, he would sort of baa-baa at us, like a sheep. I’ve seen plenty of smushy-faced cats that could meow normally, so this isn’t a matter of overbreeding.

  126. urbanforager says:

Our friends have (among others) a pure white cat. Her name is Illyra, but her nickname is Duck. She had some sort of throat infection when she was very young (our friends got it cleared up after they adopted her), so now, when she meows, it sounds *exactly* like a duck’s quack. “wack! wack!” “Hello Duck!”

  127. dirufan86 says:

My kitty used to do that, but she’s found her voice now. It’s high pitched so she always sounds like she’s crying about something.

  128. pwned by Polly and Sam says:

There is also something called the “silent meow”. It is a great sign of affection.

winston is famous for his antics…..his owner cares for him and I believe winston is a resque….winston has a tabby brother rudy….winston is faking for the camera…he is a very funny cat!

  130. HEIDI says:

I agree with the breeding of these kind of cats is wrong…but so does rich from four four….winston is a rescue

  131. Val Harding says:

Do you think the cat was trying to say,”Hey, does anybody know where that little rubber ball I was palying with went?”

  132. Shikigami says:

It might be that s/he is an elder cat. My cat only squeaked or couldn’t meow before she passed. She was 20 years old and a calico short hair (not smooshed) so it might just be that the poor dear has lost her voice.

  133. Sarah says:

for as much as this kitteh can’t meow, my own kitty was freaking out while i was watching it at the sounds it could make

  134. Bobbie says:

    Yay! It’s Winston!
I would recognize that weird, adorable kitty anywhere. Love him!

  135. VegetarainGirl says:

This is so sad, I don’t know why someone would even post something like this or film it for that matter do they think its funny. Thats just sick.

  136. Veggiesandwiches says:

omg. I seriously couldn’t stop laughing. This is great!! hahaha Adorable cat FYI!

  137. TLH says:

People, people, people! This cat is FINE! He’s not sick, his collar isn’t too tight – he’s just Winston!

It seems a lot of people here have not discovered him on richfofo’s youtube channel. GO THERE NOW and see ALL the videos about this lovely (and yes, vocal) cat.

It’s VERY funny. This cat CAN meow normally; he’s just not doing so in this video. He’s fine. He’s a perfectly normal cat. His name is Winston and he is a hit on YouTube.

  142. Mary says:

my cat does this too! we think he’s just lazy. we call him Squeekie mcGee.

  143. Sharpy says:

This just makes me sad… the poor kitty trying to meow but can’t, and if anything it sounds like it really hurts to even try :(

  144. jeff and jane says:

Our clouded tortoishell sounds like a duck quacking. It’s just the timbre of her voice, but it is funny.

  145. kacky says:

Poor thing. Who wants to breed cats to look all deformed? That’s just sick.

  146. Anonymous Kitteh says:

Its Winston, from Four Four, He always sounds like this when he wakes up, he can be pretty loud when he wants to be though.

  147. noah says:

  148. Genni L. says:

    awww poor kitties no mewz

  149. HEIDI says:

winston is doing this for attention…look him up on “FOUR FOUR” under “kitty pride”…..I’m joking about him faking.. Winston can meow and play and eat and pose for the camera….winston loves his fame..he does an interview with Allison form next top model, on four four…..winston almost look and act like he is really giving the interview.Winston is ok…he’s just an alien!

  150. TLH says:

It seems to me 90% of the people commenting here do not know who Winston is. GO WATCH RICHFOFO’S YOUTUBE CHANNEL! You people will SEE that Winston is JUST FINE and he CAN meow normally. Rich even posted a video of LOTS of Winston meows.

But no, because people are too damned lazy to read some of the comments here, and figure out that this is just a funny little trick Winston does, they think this video is “sad” and “not funny.” It’s HILARIOUS!

Would you people PLEASE pay attention for once in your miserable lives?!

    • louise says:

I’m paying attention! Oh. my. It’s really quite fascinating and enlightening, to read down this large comment list, peruse the comments one day to the next, and see how things are panning out over time. Your cat, Winston, is surely providing fodder–the catalyst?–for human psychological analysis (all the ‘sad’ comments, oh, “egads the cruelty!”–and your continual attempts to alleviate people’s fears). Definitely, I’ll have to check out Richfofo’s youtube channel.

  151. Katy says:

This video is ridiculous and sad. Why would you put something like this on this great site! It makes me so sad.

  152. ColdFusion says:

god I wish I could shut my cat up… but once in a while a meow is nice. he just has to ration them better. He used to chirp and talk to me and say lots of different noises.. then I had to neglect him outside for a few years cuz I couldn’t have him at my apartment.. and he became uncivilized :C

  153. Mikapoo says:

My cat began to meow silently about a year and a half ago – was so strange o_o sadly he died in March last year :(

I want that kitteh it’s so cute :3!

  154. SlightlyMperfect says:

Poor kitty. Makes me so sad. =(

  155. {{{{{{Willie}}}}}}} says:

    aw.. per ketty, cn’t mow… hope he/she’s K….

  156. Belle says:

So a cat with a face so smushed that its vocal chords don’t function is funny? Tragic and cruel.

    • TLH says:

Apparently you’re one of the people who doesn’t read comments. If you were, and if you had read the comments, you’d see that there isn’t a damn thing wrong with this cat. HE IS A HIT ON YOUTUBE AND HE CAN MEOW NORMALLY!! Why the hell do people not pay attention?! It’s all over the comments here – WAKE UP PEOPLE!!

  157. Laura says:

Awww, kitty’s meow is stuck. It’s there, but I think that’s pretty much all you are going to get as far as a meow.

  158. Sobriqueteh says:

He’s adorable, and obviously well-loved. Check out “Winston Responds” on YouTube. I quote, “Meow. Meow. Meow.”

Julia, read the comments from TLH throughout this comment list. This cat is a well-known Youtube cat, Winston–and there’s even video of his loud meowing antics. He’s well, according to TLH… Don’t cry wolf, use your comments for real animal cruelty.

My cat used to meow like that. Then he eventually taught himself how to meow… And now he doesn’t shut up.

  162. Dina says:

my cat couldnt “Maaw” either, and he had cancer in hes throat…
Poor kitty… i would take him to the vet just to be shure..

  163. Michelle says:

I think this cat looks adorable!

  164. Megan says:

  165. Rose says:

    reminds me of Yoda

  166. Swon says:

I think that Winston cat sounds perfectly fine.
Ofcourse I realize that breeding cats like this is too bad, but it seems this owner loves his pet and takes good care of him.

My sweet kitty started sounding like this, and got worse and worse. When I took him to the vet, it turned out that he had a cyst in his throat that was blocking his vocal chords, which for awhile we treated with steroids and stuff, to reduce the swelling, but eventually he couldn’t breathe and we had to put him down. In other words, might be a good idea to take a kitty who sounds like this to the vet in case it’s something more than just a quirk! Oh and my kitty didn’t have a smushed face at all, quite the opposite, had a quite large, beautiful big nose (he looked like a bear!) I miss him :(

  169. Murf says:

Awwwwww. I love the Winston videos. His humans love him very, very much.

  170. MartyMcfly says:

OMG !!!!!! Why does the little hing even bother ? This cracks me up so hard !!!!!!! This little guy shouldn’t even waist the energy to open his mouth – just not worth it !!!!

  171. luvsquid says:

    1. this is a persian cat (one of the oldest cat breeds… not ENTIRELY a screw up of modern breeding)
    2. his nose has nothing to do with his meow, I know persians who meow louder than most cats i know… and I had a maine coon cat who lost her meow as she got older (it happens haha.. they have good days and bad days)
    3. i think it’s cute and funny video. haha… sometimes cats just don’t understand that it’s not gonna happen today hahaa

  172. Froot says:

Aww, my calico mixed breed kitty meowed like this too since she was born. Just a random quirk since the rest of the litter meowed fine. I find it very cute and it adds character to the kitty :3

  173. Jofrisper says:

I’ve got a normal kitteh which sometimes, just after waking up, tries to meow. She opens her mouth but nothing comes out. When she was a little kitteh she would do this all the time. I guess she tends to get lazy and doesn’t put any effort to it. This may look sad, but I srsly doubt the meowing is a problem.

  174. Lyn-Z says:

For some reason that is so ridiculously sad…poor kitty

  175. Amy says:

get that cat off the kitchen counter… eww

  176. goggiesankittehs says:
