Ohai, all. Greetings from beautiful downtown Merryland. Mai knee still hurtz, lotsa, but itz getting better all the time.
I saw a marvelous picture of TTI, taken from space: the whole island (so I guess it was TTUK, not just TTI) was white with show, floating in a dark sea. Beautiful, butt (!) it looked so very very cawld. Stay warm, all you TTI’ers.

  11. Deltabob says:

That’s not enjoyment. That’s a cat with hypersthesia. It’s a sensitive skin condition. That cat’s response is a pain or irritation response.

    • Morgan says:

Agreed, completely. I have a cat with feline hyperesthesia, and the rippling skin is a dead giveaway. That cat is in pain, even though it looks cute. Poor kitty.

    • Ninny says:

OK. Then why isn’t the cat attempting to move away from the scratching? Usually anything that feels pain tries to move away from the thing causing the pain. That’s why you pull your hand out of fire.

    • Casi says:

I don’t think it’s hyperesthesia since all the symptoms seem to involve self inflicted violence of some kind. It only mentions licking once in the description, and that is obsessive licking to the point hair loss and what not. I think this is probably just a strange reaction due to the long tradition of inbreeding in American cats. While cute, it’s probably a sign of some nerves just not hooked up exactly right.

  12. AwesomeAl says:

I’m glad someone finally pointed out that is not pleasurable to the cat.

Belatedly, to Awesome Al on 1-13-10:
Thank you for this link! I read profile of condition, & in 2 cases of “auto-groomers” the spectrum of symptoms was not present. Most of my cats ripple their backs with no other manifestations. In retrospect, 2 departed cats did have this syndrome, and one of my present bebbehs is at risk. I’m careful with her!

  13. Neko says:

lol, my cat dose the SAME thing when I scratch his back. it’s so cute ^_^

  14. Kittteh/Bunny says:

    My kitteh dose that too.

  15. BGCMEOWRRRR says:

I hadda tortie who wd lick herslef when she was given skritchies, also wd start to skratch wif hind leg. Didn’t act P.O.’d, seemd rly content. I read dat when dey haz hyperesch….hypur…whatchamakallit dey nip if U overstim dem. I has dems kittehz tew. I try tew avoid “base fiddling” (tail region) wif dem.

  16. pootpoot says:

Hmm, back rub tastes so gud.

  17. My Zebbycat washes his upper front legs when I rub, scratch or brush his lower back. Rub his tum and he washes his face …. these two kittys must both have crossed nerve system wiring!

  18. Mandy says:

lol mai cat duz dis we cawl it dah leeck spawt!!

  19. Amtronic says:

Takin’ him right back to when he was a kitten nursing and mommie would give him a lick job to clean him.

  20. Sarge says:

    Aw… cute kittey

  21. icanhazbocacheezeburger says:

Tastee butt rubs iz phenomenon in my houze too

  22. AJ says:

Heheheh, we have a calico that does this when you scratch her back as well. We call it the “Auto-grooming button.”

  23. Teej says:

I think i can explain this behavior. Most animal that you can pet enjoy being pet because it brings back the memory of their mothers cleaning them. I would assume then that the mother of this cat clean him whenever she was nursing him and he picked up the common occurance and simulates it unknowingly each time he’s pet. Just an idea though

  24. jeanne' says:

    noodle lvus dis.

  25. reotaksis says:

are you sure your kitten is allright? licking when scratching at the back can be a sing of neuro-damage, well i saw this on sheeps, i is not necessary that is something wrong with the cat…
