What make/model/operating system/versions are you running?
I’ve seen CRT’s blink owt when the power supply goes bad, but nawt uh LCD unless the connections awr loose.
Could be a renegade power saving profile. Is it persistent or does it come and go? I hate to resort to a cliche, but have you tried simply shutting down and rebooting?
Could be a power supply/heating problem. Lots of dust bunnies? Possible to point a fan into the air vents of the case?
Wow! You think of everything! I’ve checked the connections and looked for dust.
I looked online and this seems like a fairly common problem with the type of monitor I have (HP 1702). At first it just happened once or maybe twice. Then it would happen a few times after booting up, then not happen again for hours. Now it’s happening often, and as I indicated, it’s blinking on for a split second, then blinking off again.
I’m using a Dell desktop Pentium 4 running Windows XP.
Today I downloaded and installed the ATI Catalyst software suite and South Bridge driver, as recommended as a fix for this problem. Things were good for a few hours; now worse than ever.
Or apparently the capacitors could be dried out.
Ah ha! The HP 1702 is notorious for having bad capacitors in it.
That is a little circuit gizmo that is prone to heating. Unless your are good friends with the local Radio Shack geeks and are good with a soldering gun, the only way to fix it (maybe) is take it into a repair shop.
The little gizmo heats up, swells up, and then fails. The ones I’ve seen fail are usually part of the LCD panel circuitry itself rather than the power supply circuity leading to it, thus no “tink”.
Also, the fact that you are using an LCD on the same system tells me that it’s not anything to do with the video card or other elements of the “CPU”.
The driver upgrade probably just bought you some time on a component that was going to fail anyway as it has better power management algorithms and probably reduced the strain on the monitor, but eventually those little buggers swell up and swell up from continued use until they pop or otherwise simply don’t function anymore.
Sorry it took so long to reply, but I was trying to find recall and warranty information, but it looks like the last production run was 2005, and HP only had a 3 year warranty on them at the most back then.
I bought it second-hand 18 months ago, so it doesn’t really owe me anything.
How I long for the days of my 286, which never crashed, and old monitors, which I never had any problems with!
