I agree with Dee. Some pets will eat everything in sight, and their humans must be responsible to not allow them to gain so much weight. It makes me sad when pictures like this are posted because someone thinks it’s funny. It’s not funny! It’s abusive.
This picture made me horribly sad. I am glad to see I am not the only one not laughing at it. I sometimes wish LOLcats wouldnt put stuff like this up, it only encourages people to think that it is okay.
I’d say negligent, rather than abusive. That is far too obese to be remotely healthy, and it didn’t happen over night. This issue should have been addressed by his/her human a long time ago, when they first saw the cat was carrying a little extra weight. As for the people who try to justify it by saying that the other cat may be small, they are just as bad, it is obvious by looking at the cat, that it is severely overweight, the shape of the body is a dead give away….if by chance we are all wrong and this is a photoshop job (unlikely, but possible), then it is even less funny than if it were real. /rant over.
Negligence *is* abuse. Letting your animal get this fat is exactly the same as not feeding them and letting them become skin and bones.
I agree with you Dee. I would call it animal abuse.
I agree.
This is a severe case of animal abuse in two possible ways:
1. either poor obese cat didn’t receive proper medical treatment for hormone dis-balance (thyroid) from its owners, or
2. this is a severe case of owners not taking care of cat by giving the cat far too much for for a very long time.
I just fear whether obese cat can be helped at this point, and whether the owners will ruin the little kitten’s health.
Either way, these people don’t deserve to have a cat and must be immediately reported to authorities.
Although genetics can play a part in obesity, even in animals, the owner had to have allowed this to happen. Many cats cannot eat dry cat food without gaining a lot of weight. The carbohydrate content is too high for their systems, which are geared for lean protein. A good quality canned food might have saved this kitty if given early enough. This cat is most likely diabetic already. So sad. Owner should be banned from having pets.
Sometimes its simply genetic. Nothing more. A friend had multiple cats and one was this big. She modified diet etc, …vet said sometimes that’s just the way it is. Cat actually became insulin dependent. Me thinks twas genetic.
If they pretend its abuse they can tell themselves they were abused to make them human fat.
And then there are those fat people who lie to themselves and say that it’s ‘genetic’.
I’m fat because I’m lazy and do not eat properly. My family members are fat because they’re lazy and do not eat properly.
‘Genetics’ is a cop out that too many people try to use to justify their obesity, as well as their animal’s.
I wholeheartedly agree.
I’m glad there are other people who realized the big cat is grossly obese and unhealthy. It’s really sad when people think it’s cute to be in such terrible shape. Funny too how the only people who recognize the health risks in some of these pictures are also the only ones who speak proper English.
agreed. I actually dont’ find that funny, as it’s extremely hazardous for his health. do it to yourself, fine, but please, don’t do it to your animals.

Would you laugh at a morbidly obese human?
This is a form of abuse all it’s own. Do you know how many other health problems being that heavy causes?
And you call yourselves cat-lovers. Frankly, I’m disappointed.
Well said CheezbugerInMahBelli. What is supposed to be funny about seeing a lovely cat look like this?
Ask a vet what problems the size of this animal presents. Maybe the owners will regret their actions when it dies prematurely.

There’s nothing the least bit wrong with “judging” this type of thing, because whether it’s due to irresponsible ownership or the cat being ill, it’s still not funny in the least.

I completely agree with both CheezburgerInMahBelli and inkoespada. I really, really don’t see anything funny when cat’s life is critically endangered by negligent and dangerous behavior from its owner. I was shocked when I saw the picture and immediately looked it ANYONE here will say that this picture is nothing but a sad display of poor and dangerous behavior by owners. Two people reacted?! And what is next: there is a new kitty in household: why don’t it’s owners make little kitty morbidly obese too?! Do you see the pattern here? Some people should never be allowed to take care of a pet and endanger it in the worst possible way! I wonder how the whole family looks like when cat is morbidly obese?
No one can “make” a kitteh obese. They are either normal eaters – or they are not. Or they have something wrong with them that makes them gain weight.
Just because the one cat possibly eats too much – doesn’t mean the little kitty will.
And this has nothing to do with the familu who owns them. THEY don’t eat cat food. The point is, we only have the silly caption of the small kitty accusing the plump kitty of eating too muh. We don’t know what the problem is.
But the picture is amusing because of the situation and what the kitty is saying, NOT because one of them is plump!!
Wow, everyday you learn something. “And this has nothing to do with the family who owns them. THEY don’t eat cat food.”
Well, I sure hope so that they don’t eat cat food. But, do they provide food for the poor obese cat? Or how do you suggest obese cat gets its food? Maybe cat’s food is falling from the sky? Or little gnomes bring it during night when nobody’s looking?
Come on people, be serious!
If you cannot understand poor cat’s problems, how will you be ever able to help another human being in need?
Yoo ar iin teh wrong place to be telling people here that we don’t understand cat’s problems – or help other people in need.
That’s what we do – most of us here. No where in the world will you find more people gathered in one spot who do so much for animals. Nor probably a nicer bunch of people who help each other all the time – and all their IRL friends and families as well.
Please spend some time here to see who we are – I think you’d be very surprised.
I am glad that you emphasize that most of people here help other animals. I am really happy to hear that. However, that doesn’t help me when I feel sad over the poor cat, while some people here write about velvet cake, watermelons and vodka after seeing the poor obese cat. Instead, showing some concern and demanding answers about poor cat’s health would help more.
Also, people care about animals beyond this web site, and you here don’t have exclusive rights for care for animals.
Nawt necesserry tu playin with the t—s.
I have to disagree…this picture is not amusing in the slightest…and it has everything to do with the family who owns the cat, who do you think supplies the cat with food, he certainly doesn’t get it himself. The owner is responsible for giving the cat the right portion size and the right number of Calories per day and not over indulging the cat.
Now, some say that the cat’s size may be due to an underlying medical condition. If this is the case, I would not be uploading the picture to this website- because IT ISN’T FUNNY. Its incredibly sad.
*Exactly*! I have two cats and Pippi, my orange Tabby, would gladly weigh 15 or 16 pounds if I let her. How much does she weigh? A little over 9 because I monitor her food intake and how much she exercises!
Now, if only I could be so diligent about my own body weight, lol.
good points guys, and i’m really heartened by the responses pointing out maltreatment by indulgence.
people forget that when we domesticate animals we immediately become responsible for their welfare. part of that includes a healthy diet, physical exercise, medical care etc – *not* over-indulgement to the point of jeopardising it’s health just because “it’s too hard to say no”.
genetics are genetics and are hard to argue with, but you wouldn’t take a photo of someone with a genetic disorder – esp. from your own family – and post it on the web for everyone to chuckle over. why should your pet (which is for most people, another family member) be exempt from that rule?
sheer laziness, but like i say, i’m heartened by the number of people who find this sort of thing wrong.
*Upfi offers black forest gateaux wif extra helpings of whipped cream in the breakroom*
Fanks Upfi !! Ai woant eet fur a week, week, week nao !!
Hi!
Yes – we are all catlovers here – and yes, we all know that overweight in any species is not healthy.
What we don’t know – is the story behind the photos. This kittehs weight problem might be adressed properly – it might not. He might be a healthy kitteh despite the weight – we don’t know.
We all take care of our kittehs in here – and smiling at a cat picture with, what I would say probably is an acurate caption – does not make us BC’s minions…
Now – there’s an ekstra batch of english apple hats in the brake room!!!

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
I am just amazed how miraculously obese cat’s owner stopped commenting here with us the moment some people here raised concern regarding poor cat’s health. And that person did not offer a word of explanation, not even to tell us what is really happening with morbidly obese cat! Silence, and lack of any explanation sounds to me a lot like our worst predictions regarding poor cat are true!
Just let’s hope that family won’t ruin little kitten’s health.
I understand that people come here to have a great time and leave funny comments, but every once in a while pictures are not funny and yet people still want to live in some “happy” land away from reality.
Congrats on living in “happy” land, but not every cat is happy as some of you are!!!
For those using words “Abuse trolls”: it is much better to raise questions and concerns that to live in “la-la” land all the time!
Odd. I don’t see either the individual credited
with taking the picture or the person who
captioned it posting in the comment section
at all.
Look better
Neither teh person to whom the picture is credited, not the captioner has made any comments here.
Who were you thinking of??
We regular commenters all know each other – so we would notice when newcomers arrive. In fact, I’ve NEVER seen a comment by suzycatmama.
It would be so more productive and useful if you demanded from web site owners explanation regarding suzy(bad)catmama than arguing with me!? Or that poor cat and helping the cat doesn’t deserve too much of your attention?!
I see that people here would like me so much more if I talked about “black forest gateaux wif extra helpings of whipped cream” or if I said “Jus rememburr, teh camera awais addz 10 powndz!”

Its easy to assume you don’t care when you obviously think that an obese cat is something to laugh at (regardless of how he came to be that way). I have to ask, would you think it funny and that the parents weren’t to blame it this were a toddler? I think not.
Krissy87,
That was a great answer. I am proud that someone has reason and sense here.
Ooops, we interrupted their breakroom party… And brought up some real concerns regarding poor cat. I know that I have spoilt their fun. I must be a bad person for caring for the poor obese cat!

To be fair, horizontal stripes are teh unflattering.
My Maine Coon, Tuffy, was a big boi even at optimium weight, plus he had floofy long hairs. When he was getting older and had gained some weights due to inactivity, a fren brang over her toddler, who was teh vry innerested in teh pritty kitty. She axed me teh kitty’s name and I said “It’s Tuffy.” She repeated it, “Tubby!” Was teh cute, teh funny, and teh sadly fitting.
Care trolls should note that Tuffy was well loved, well cared for and deeply mourned when he died at age 18 of thyroid disease and weighing under 10 pounds, down from his heftiest of 16.
there’s a big difference between a naturally big breed, like a maine coon, and an over fed cat.
Wow, that ain’t right. They shouldn’t let him be that way….Shame Shame
Your comments are really sick.
Deh bihg kitteh’s tayull is smawler den deh liddlol kitteh’s.
I agree that this cat is seriously overweight. However, we do not know the background to the picture. I hope that it is perhaps taken by someone who has adopted the cat and has taken a “before” picture prior to helping him to lose weight.
Much as we can hope (and I hope you’re right!), a large percentage of obese animals become obese because the owners can’t refuse them a “little treat”.
It’s the kindest form of abuse (lieterally loving them to death), but it’s still abuse.
However, as has been pointed out above, some animals, like humans, are genetically prone to obesity. In some (few) cases, a healthy diet is given and the cat has no access to other noms, but still becomes obese.
If it’s abuse, then by all means cey abuse. But we just don’t know. I, for one, hope this cat is/was under a vet’s care.
And to those who cry “care trolls” … expressing concern doesn’t automatically make someone a troll.
However, people who come in, guns blazing, crying “ABUSE, ABUSE!!!” probably are trolls.
It’s a fine line, and one I prefer to ponder over M&M’s
Duz u share ur m&mz???

Wonderful comments. I truly believe “fat cats” are mostly due to health reasons, and even then most are undetermined.

I think that you are waaaay too optimistic when it comes how pets are treated by its owners. Some people could care less if their pets are endangered by their negligent and dangerous behavior. After seeing this truly SAD picture, I have no excuse for the owner’s behavior. And I truly fear for the little kitty on the picture: how will the little one look like in a year or two? This is sad and only sad. And I reject what you sad “It’s the kindest form of abuse”!?!? Every abuse is nothing but abuse! And there is no explanation for it, whether our pets, friends, family members are abused! By justifying one form of abuse, we are allowing for other forms of abuse to exist! I am deeply saddened by some of the comments here. And, did you notice that cat’s owner miraculously stopped commenting after abuse was mentioned?
The little kitty will prbably look just like he does not, but bigger.
My cats have access to food all day long – and they are all perfectly normal sized kittehs. They just eat when they are hungry – and if they are not, they don’t. I personally have never had a cat that overate to the point of being fat.
I think most cats who become this large have something wrong with them. Sometimes fixable – sometimes not.
You know, I understand and appreciate your concern over the cat, but in all honesty, your self-righteous anger here will do nothing to HELP the cat, and is getting annoying. You don’t know what the situation is with the cat, and appear to reject any possibility that it is a condition that the owners are treating, or that they are 100% neglectful.
I truly apologize if caring for a cat, child or any other person is a crime. “Self-righteous”- we are not in church, you know. Relax. Sorry to spoil your everyday fun. (Little sarcasm is always good)
The term “self-righteous” applies to anyone who thinks they know it all, and are right, regardless of what facts come into play. Hence the “self” part of self-righteous.
Incidentally, I reject your rejection of my statement
It’s called “the kindest form of abuse” because it’s not intended as abuse. They *think* they are being kind. This is far removed from the deliberate abuse of, say, beating a dog over the head with a stick, which is abusive abuse.
The people who overfeed their pets are often caring for them the best way they know how. A little education goes a long way; much further than beating them over the head with a stick. (What is it with sticks today? I apologise for the repetition)
I do not condone abuse, and if I see an animal (or child, or elder, or any vulnerable person or creature) being abused, I will act. I do, however, recognise the difference between abuse and ignorance.

Man I hate these pictures. Fail to see what’s cute about obesity in animals.
Nothing cute about an overweight animal. ABUSE! Quit overfeeding that poor cat before it dies an untimely death, dipshits. There is NO REASON to keep the food bowl full all day and all night long. Soooooooooooooooooo irresponsible.
Now this, my friends, is a caretroll.
Running in blindly and screaming abuse and calling people dipshits achieves nothing except making yourself look foolish.
Methinks a little background on this picture might help, but in the absence of background, we need to assume that we don’t know the background. Far stretch, I know …
Okay, fair enough.
Maybe calling it abuse without knowing the story went too far.
But if a cat is even starting to reach that size, the owner should at least have the vet investigate it, if they haven’t done so already.
Who knows? Though unlikely, I can’t be 100% sure that this cat ISN’T the picture of health despite being large. Sometimes people CAN be a little overweight without any further health problems.
But on the other hand, I can’t seem to get out of my head what I heard, what was it, that 5 extra pounds on a cat is like 20 extra on a human? Well, this looks to be more than 5 or 10 extra pounds.
I hope you’re right, that this could be a “before” picture, and that somebody has given this cat some help. Whenever I look at this, I can only imagine all of the problems the cat must have simply doing everyday things like grooming, walking, jumping.
I was harsh before. I don’t think you’re bad people, in fact some of you have responded intelligently and compassionately. These are just my own hangups coming out, I guess. But geez, amid all of the “Ohh, lookit teh tubbee kittee” comments, isn’t it about time some actual concern for welfare showed up? I’m sorry if not laughing along with the rest has earned me a “troll” label, but I just can’t…
BAD peeple!!! You think we ar nawt BAD peepl????
Pardon my outrage. We almost all of us have rescue and foster kittehs. Many of us here work in animal shelters and work tireless trying to save as many kittehs as possbile before they are put to death.
Others work in “Trap, neuter and release” projects.
I myself have FOUR (see name) rescued cats! Two formerly feral kittens, on stray that just wandered into our yard, and another originally fostered but kept because she was so sweet – despite her litterbox problems.
EVERYONE here is a cat lover.
And we have nothing to do with the pictures. They just appear – and we comment and have fun.
My sister currently has a very obese cat – who has been on a special vet diet for some time. And she’s just not losing much. But she was starving with four babies when we found her.
We all have plenty of concern for kitteh “welfare” in our normal lives. We don’t really need to express it here.
Yes. You are not bad people. But you emphasized the wrong word. How about saying it like this: “You are NOT bad people”. NOT being the most important word here. Maybe I should have said “I think you are good people”–I meant the same thing either way.
In fact, it’s very wonderful that you do so much for cats, and I’m glad to hear that everyone here loves them. Like I said, I’m sorry I implied that you didn’t. But that just makes it a little puzzling that something like this would be found “funny” to people who care as much as you do. It’s like making a stand against racism, but then laughing at a racial joke. I don’t know, maybe it’s something wrong with my sense of humor. Maybe I need to learn how to take a joke. I’m confused by this reaction, is all.
Maybe your sister could ask the vet if there are any other options to help her kitty. It’s like some people have already said, sometimes it’s genetic, and in that case diet alone isn’t usually enough.
Anyway, this is starting to turn into a huge ordeal. Let’s just agree to disagree, okay? ICHC is supposed to be a HAPPY place.
Makes me wonder how your sister’s cat went from starving to obese. A medical condition, no doubt, since EVERYONE here would NEVER overfeed an animal for which they have real concern.
The biggest problem I have with “care trolls” is that they are the people who automatically assume that the owners of the cats are doing nothing. Most people here have the grace to believe that the person owned by the cat is doing something to help it, or that there is something we do not know occuring in the background.
“Care trolls” are so sickened by the state of the animal the only thing they can think of to do is to attack. I understand that to some extent, but what if the animal is being cared for? What if there isn’t anything more to do for it than to love it? If my cats aren’t perfect I can’t take and post their pictures?
So the message is we all have to be perfect for someone to love us?
.
Under those criteria, none of us are lovable.
Some of us have scars. Our fur isn’t perfect. We are missing eyes, parts of tails and ears, whole legs. We have to have painful treatments to survive. We are not “show quality.” We are beyond fluffy, we are old, we are blind, we have had a hard life to get here, we have problems.
So what?
If someone cannot love me enough to show me to the world with all my quirks, foibles, and pain, if they cannot love me enough to find laughter and joy in my existence even though I am not perfect, then why are any of us here?
Concern for welfare without compassion for all of those involved isn’t concern, it is uninformed judgement.
You don’t have to find this funny. Just, please know that many of us have really difficult situations we are dealing with that involve our pets, and people who make these accusative assumptions are not helping us, they are adding to our pain.

Apparently, we’re not done here.
Look, I’m not the heartless monster some of you guys seem to think I am.
I’m very sorry about your son’s cat. I myself just lost my cat of 14 years (Princess or “Binky” to her closest friends) to feline septic peritonitis this past June. She had always been a bit overweight–I couldn’t get my dad to stop giving her people food, no matter how close a watch I tried to keep–so we didn’t really notice when her abdomen had filled with fluid until it had reached the final stages and there was nothing more we could do.
Believe me, I feel your pain, and I do know it’s not always the owner’s fault. I’m sure there are people who do all that they can.
I regret calling it abuse in my first post here. I think my perturbation was directed at the joke itself, and it got misplaced along the way.
I’ve already been apologizing for my accusatory tone in previous posts. I don’t know how many more times I have to say I’m sorry.
Yoo dont! Itz OK.
Itz just that, every taim there is a picture of a kitteh doing something that cud bee danjerous – like the one WAAAAY back of teh Kitteh at the steeging wheel of a car – people come and say all kinds of things about how awful we are – poor kitty – why don’t we care – or know better.
Are you a lurker?? Do you read the comments here a lot? Have you seen, for example, everything that Pryzmakitteh is doing to rescue kittehs?
I would say – why don’t you just join us – you would be welcome! And you would see who and why we are and what we really do here – which is mostly play and have fun with words and each otter!
Well, I can see your point in that too.
Maybe I should get more involved with the community.
Most times I admit I don’t really read the comments.
(Purrhaps bcuz im not yet flooent in lol–after a whyle, trying 2 reed n write it mayks mai peepurrs n noggin sore. :< )
But I'd love to hear more about the good things the people on ICHC are doing for the furry peepls. : )
And thank you very much, JazzyGirl. Mm, smells like cinnamunz.
I think you have done an admirable job of expressing your thoughts.
*serves a cup of cheer*
Oh, wow what an elaborate message! You should congratulate yourself on mastering the technique of finding excuses, million of them for the owners of the obese cat,.
1. If cat is sick, then vet can help very easily to loose weight,
2. In US there is one of the highest percent of obese people. Obesity in US (and other countries) has become an epidemic of enormous proportions.
3. There is an unbelievably high percent of children who become obese at very young age in US and other countries- that is scientifically proven fact,
4. When you take all of this into consideration, seeing an morbidly obese cat does ring a bell! If parents are irresponsible to themselves, if parent endanger their children, who is to stop them from endangering a cat’s life?
Please people, wake up for once from your “happy land” world, and send a clear message to cat owner: they need either to treat the cat, according to vets instructions, or change drastically cat’s diet.
Cat are like children: they don’t know when it’s enough of food, or treats, so responsible owners are there to help them with that!

The point is not that I don’t find laughter IN one’s condition, perfect or not, it’s that I don’t direct laughter AT one’s condition. I’m actually pretty direct and straightforward about subjects some people find sensitive, and I use a lot of humor about my life and the lives of people I’m closest to…but, while I might commiserate with my niece about the unfortunate prevalence of form-fitting clothes (she is obese and I am not), it would NEVER occur to me that laughing AT her weight would be funny in any respect. Whether or not her weight was due to a medical condition or overeating.
Considering the average normal weight of a cat, the 5 to 20 ratio seems more than a bit off. My cats weigh 8 and 9 pounds – and extra five on either one of them would be like someone who weighs 150 pounds gaining more than 75!
I think the 5=20 thing applies to medium to large breed dogs, but I’m not positive…
*an
I had a hunch that the numbers were off, but the point is the same: What would be only a little extra weight on a human would be a huge gain to a smaller creature, cat or dog.
I agree with you that the “aww, lookit the cute kitty” comments are sickening. A cat that large isn’t cute; a cat that size is cause for concern.
However, in the absence of background (how did it get so big? Is it under a vet’s care? Was it rescued? Is there a health condition involved?), we need to assume that the owner is doing the right thing.
The whole “innocent until proven guilty” concept
I definitely hope that’s the case.
But I still can’t find anything funny in the joke this poster was trying to make. But those’re my own feelings, and this thread has seen plenty of them.

This is why cats should not be fed dry food.
That poor guy can probably barely waddle to the food bowl!
uhm… what? i agree this is very sad that he’s so overweight, but it has nothing to do with dry food. my 4 y.o. kitty is very healthy and slim and she only eats dry. presumably it’s either a medical condition or simply over feeding.
I know that we never know the whole story with these photos. And I always hope that the animal is healthy and being cared for, and to the extent possible the problem is being addressed. That said, I repeat my earlier comment: I fail to see what is cute or funny about obese animals.
I think kitteh has been eating cheezburgers at McDonald’s…

Mmmmppppphhhhhtttt!!!!! Now I know where all the bank bailout money went!!!
teh fat cats eeted it all!!
This isn’t funny – it’s disgusting. The owner of this cat should do jail time for animal abuse.
This thread = serious business. *yawn* Next.
So it bores you that someone got away with letting their cat get in this condition? It bores you that the poor cat is suffering? It bores that other people want to bring attention to a very serious matter? I sure hope no one in your life abuses you. Because I’ll be bored and won’t call attention to it so that maybe you can get some help.
Neat. Thanks.
This picture is HEEEELARIOUS
You are SOOOOOOOO sick (if you can post this comment when so many questions here about cat’s health have been raised)
I agree with the comments here about this being severe negligence/animal abuse. The cat could have a thyroid condition and is obviously being overfed. People are surprised to research that and find out how little cats actually need to eat. I’m sure they feed dry, which so many still do, and need to feed only high protein wet food – no grain.
My cat was a diabetic, insulin dependent, as well. I switched his diet to low carb, started getting him to play more, and he not only lost weight but no longer has to take insulin. Reduce that baby’s food and check his thyroid out. Take some time with him. He WILL lose weight. That is not genetics, cats don’t have that. I saw another cat once where the owner said there was nothing they could do …. wet food, restricted calories (more than you think – about 5 oz is all they need a day as an adult), exercise. Her cat lost weight.
If you think he’s happy, see how happy he would be if he was healthy and comfortable.
LOVE THEM= keep them healthy!!!
reminds me of one of MY favorite kittehs, we named him squirt because he was the runt of the litter. When we first found him he was hopping thru a corn field eating grasshoppers. He would bird call my mom when she called him budda-budda that was a lol bigtime!!!!!!!!!!!
I really hope that’s photoshopped. If not…poor kitty and shame on the owners. Even I adopted a cat in that condition, I would not photograph it and pass it off and funny and cute…because it isn’t.
“Grandmother’s cat was to big for grandma’s lap, so it laid 20 years in a bed” (Blame Garrison Keillor,

what in the heck have those people done to that poor cat?!?!? Yikes.
