Whether they’re about to die, or stay there and be in a cage for a while, I try to give them the best energy I can.

I sing to them while I’m cleaning cages. I’m not a great singer, and we’re talking about “Waltzing Matilda” and “Land of the Silver Birch” and stuff, but they seem to like it. Or I tell them stories about kitties finding forever homes.

Perhaps a laminated sign with a splort-worthy lolcat on each cage, saying: Please wash your hands. If you transmit germs from another kitty to me, I might get sick. If I get sick, I can’t be put up for adoption. If I can’t be put up for adoption, I won’t be able to find a loving home.

I’ve explained it to people before, who then acted totally surprised, like they never even saw the enormous red octagon that was staring them in the face on their way into the room… and who used the sanitizer once, and then proceeded to handle multiple cats without using it again, until I reminded them that it’s EVERY cat. And this is after I explained that it’s because even a cold travels very fast under these conditions, and cleaning their hands keeps the cats safer.

Personally, I want the signs to say, “If you don’t clean your hands, the cats have a much higher chance of getting sick. If they get sick, they’ll die. Not cleaning your hands is basically killing cats. So clean your $%&@ing hands!!!!!” but they’d never allow it. They won’t allow anything that mentions “euthanasia” (which is a euphemism) at all.
