Umm. That’s not really cutesy. It’s a display of agression. He’s saying he’ll fight people if they try to take his food. Maybe had a little bit of neglect before he was weaned or experienced some uncomfortable time periods hungry before finding his new owner.
Exactly. Once you see the second kitteh, it makes much more sense. The vocal one is the alpha and is protecting the fud.

Well you’ve never had a kitteh that’s been mistreated and adopted that approach. It’s no problem with cats because once they get grown up they can always find food or nearly always and they know it. Dogs can get their own food but they need a pack and if they can’t talk you into going hunting they entirely dependant on you. But even dogs who have been starved as puppies can feel pretty secure after a few years of eating regularly and being taken good care of.
I’m glad someone else here sees this for what it is. If that was a dog it wouldn’t be quite so cute!
Well of course it wouldn’t… kittehs are far superior to dogs in every way. Especially when it comes to cuteness…
Uhhh, pretty much all kittens do that. Maybe still for the reasons you say, but that’s what happens when you’re born in litters. The only kittens I’ve had that DON’T do that are the passive ones that are at the bottom of the pecking order, or when they’re eating with their mom (obviously you don’t growl at Mom, she’ll teach you a lesson).
my kitties just use their paws to steal the food bowls from each other. no growling, no hissing, just munching. it’s kinda cute considering that most other times they just fight (brothers! go figure) but with food it’s developed into a little dance across the kitchen.

The younger ones are always so grumpy though, like they haven’t learned to figure things out peacefully!
I have a big fat female cat that will actually just shove her way in front of the food bowl and take over.
Yeah, I’ve dealt with a couple litters before. They don’t have to be neglected to do it, they just do it. Problem comes, though, if they stay that way and either get into spats/try to take away the others’ food once they get bigger, or start swatting at hands. So still not great to call it “cute”. That’s how my uncle’s cat turned mean… he had some behaviors that were “sooo cute” when he was a kitten… then he got huge.
Thankfully he’s mellowed back out in his old age.
Dogs are territorial over food, and cats are territorial over space. Or so I’ve been told, and it was borne out when we moved across the country into a rental house half the size and the nawt-alpha cat developed a spraying problem when we brotted in teh chrismuss tree… nawt sew grate, akshullee.
That’s what I thought, too. Particularly when you see the other kitten shrinking away. That kitty ain’t happily nomming, he’s warning.

Food aggression is usually not a happy thing. Doesn’t always mean anything more than he had to fight with his siblings for food, but it is something you want to discourage or it could lead to some spats at the food bowl (or in the case of one cat I’ve known, swatting at hands when they come near the bowl)
The good thing is, you noticed the kittys ears perked back up when the hoomin petted him?
He was going to boss his lil bruder around, but not their hoomin. Far as food agression goes, ‘s nawt that bad.
Yah, he’s one cheesed off kitty. My brother’s kittens showed aggression when we moved them to solid foods, too. They wouldn’t whine growl like this one, but they’d do things like stomp their front paws.

Nah, it’s growling – feels like its food is threatened! Can tell by the flattened ears. My cat used to do the same thing as a kitten when we gave him hot chips and then got too close while he was eating them!

I don’t know how old this clip is, but I’d get that Kitty to a doctor pronto. We had a cat who made the same noise when she was eating. It turned out she had a massive abscess behind one of her teeth and was in terrible pain as she chewed.

I was just going to offer the same comment; the kitten might have serious tooth problems, as the growling sounds more like pain than aggression.

I’m sorry to hear that! I kind of know how you feel, not exactly, but almost – my cat used to just snuggle & talk with me, then I got married & had to move & couldn’t take her with me. My sister took her in & when I visited there a while back, she barely even spared me a glance. Not that I blame her, but I do miss her.

A bit harsh, but I had the same thought. I was glad when he finally moved the other dish over for the meek kitteh.
Uh, that kitten could have easily walked over to the other dish… cats are not completely totally helpless, even when they’re kittens, and there’s obviously a pecking order there that not even the owner can do anything about.

all of my girls (Tonya, Spooky, Snowflake and Butterscotch) do that whenever i give them fresh cooked chicken…I had a crosseyed boy named Samm who as a 3 month old kitten once stole a turkey drumstick from his (VRY) big brother (34″ long and 13lbs) and kept him at bay by growling just like the little kitteh in the vid just long enough to fill his fuzzy little belleh…whereupon he curled up under my desk like a bloated little tick and napped for hours…Samm was a funny cat, i miss that old guy, but the ppl i gave him to took good care of him until he crossed over at age 15

I’ve played this video near both of my cats…they’ve both reacted exactly the same.They woke up and began to move backwards and forwards staring at the screen…after some initial confusion and looking around wildly! Put that together with the imense cuteness and this is my favourite video ever!!!
