My Natasha just got home yesterday after 3 days in the hospital with “acute renal disease”. She’s better, but has clavamox, pepcid ad for her tummy, and pain med. Also, we have to give her 300 ml of subcutaneous fluid every day. Now, husband and I are leaving on vacation on Tuesday (Paris, woo-hoo), which leaves competent but tender-hearted daughter to care for Natasha. The fluids are definitely a two-person job (one to hold kitteh, one to administer), so I’ve asked nice neighbors to help her.
Question is this: What is the best way to make sure Natasha stays still, but not traumatize her overmuch?
Today’s session had both daughter and me in tears. I’m sure we felt worse than poor ‘Tashie.

SubQs are pretty hard on a lot of people and a lot of cats. I had a terrible time with my Nermal; the couple of time I’ve done Loki’s, he’s actually been pretty calm, which is a blessing. tessm has a CRF kitty who gets subqs regularly, and might have some thoughts. Hang in there and don’t panic, okay? Staying calm will help keep Natasha calm, and plenty of people have worked through this.
I gave you the links because you can get a LOT of input in a big hurry there, not just about subqs but about anything else you can think of involving kitty kidneys.

You might consider checking at your vet clinic and seeing if any techs or assistants would be interested in making a few dollars a day coming by while you’re away.

Oral liquids be different.
Put kitty on table or counter or something. I recommend a surface where you can back her up against a wall or something to keep her from continuing to retreat — at home, I actually use my couch with her facing mostly outwards.
(I’m gonna assume you’re right-handed — switch directions if you’re left-handed.)
Put your left arm over kitty, and use your elbow to hold her snug against your hip while you use your hand to control her head. Oral meds are pretty quick, I suggest grabbing her scruff up HIGH, right behind her ears — you won’t hurt her, but you absolutely have to get her head under control.
Use your left hand to pull kitty’s head up and back, and *immediately* with right hand, which should have syringe with meds in it already or in very easy reach, put the business end of the syringe in kitty’s mouth and squirt it all in at once as soon as it clears the teeth. Don’t worry about hurting, choking, or otherwise distressing — the least distress you can do is to make it as fast as you possibly can.
Will kitty like it? Nope. They never do and never will. The best you can do is make it quick and get it done on the first attempt.
Give treats *immediately* after meds and Toonces may get resigned.
