I’m not very happy with the word “Spaz” used in this lol. It derives from spastic – another name for cerebral palsy – and is used to imply lack of intelligence. I had an uncle who was badly handicapped physically by CP, but was one of the most intelligent people I know.

    • FreeLion/Wiz says:

ohai kerrilove – hab we met? **extends culurful wing ov frenship** Iz dat yur caption awn the pikshur?

      • judson says:

The word spastic is used differently depending on location which has led to some controversy and misunderstanding. The term generally originates from spasticity, a medical condition characterised by hypertonia, or a high degree of muscle tightness. Spasticity underlies spastic diplegia and many other forms of cerebral palsy. But the word in common speech can also be used in a pejorative context. The level of severity depends on whether one understands it as it is used in the United States or the United Kingdom [1]. In the UK it can be considered an offensive way to refer to the disabled[2], while in the US it is more closely associated with hyperactivity or clumsiness and carries few offensive connotations. In India the word spastic is used without negative connotations, with The Spastics Society of India being India’s most noted non-profit and a non-governmental organization (NGO), working for Neuro-Muscular and Developmental Disabilities.

        • judson says:

I shoulda mentioned dat the preceeding wuz cut an pasted from Wikipedia.

            I apolajize.

      • Aoife says:

I believe it’s a dialectical and generational problem.

In the UK, and especially for anybody over 20 (maybe older, I was an early started with anti-discrimination feelings), the word ‘spaz’ and the connotations of erratic, uncontrolled, clumsy and undesirable movement relates very specifically to people with medical conditions (primarily but not exclusively Cerebal Palsy), and also has negative playground-use relating to stupidity and worthlessness. It is similar in insult to ‘cripple’, and people often see disablist terms in a similar ligt as racialising terms, as they both involve unfair generalisations and degredation due to alledged membership of a percieved group.

But I understand your use was probably innocent/ignorant, due to age and/or location.

It’s good that you won’t be using it anymore :) I spent years at school trying to convince some of my friends not to use it, and they still do (since I left school I actually got very ill and now often use a wheelchair… so I can pull additional guilt-power when my friends slip-up :) ).

I sent a looooong linguisticy email to the cheez, as I don’t want to see them getting into trouble with UK disability charities and campaigning groups. You say tom-ay-to, I say tom-ah-to, eh?

    • cat tree says:

I’ve never heard “spaz” used to imply lack of intelligence. The word seems to be used more as a pejorative in the UK, and has a different connotation in the States. Are you from the UK? Interesting background here:

    • kafleen says:

It is always heartwarming to me to be reminded that this is such a great place that people can bring their hurts and concerns to the table and they will be discussed with kindness, intelligence, and compassion.

There are many, many words in the English language that we use that mean more that what many people realize. I could list a bunch of examples to start a chain of awareness-raising, but it could be offensive, so I won’t. I think it’s good to find out these things, so we can then choose not to use them. We get into habits and don’t think about what we are saying.

    • Heather Mac says:

I wasn’t happy with it either. My best friend has CP (spastic diplegia) and she is the River to my Simon, she’s that smart.

  13. JAJEH says:

Agree, Annipuss – it’s another careless use of words that has negative implications.
