I’m so glad to see other people who agree. The only reason I read the comments on this video was to see if anyone else commented about the dangers of feeding human food to wildlife. I wasn’t sure if the squirrel was a pet or wild, but apparently he was wild. Great to see that a lot of people are smart enough to know better than to feed wildlife. Don’t do it, it’s not cute and is bad for the animal – you wouldn’t want to kill that squirrel would you? That’s exactly what people food will do.

It wasnt trained, its an urban squirrel in the UK, they do this. It smelled the nuts and followed.

And this is why at several of our National Parks we now get to spend our tax dollars to pay rangers to sit there and make sure people do not feed the chipmunks and ground squirrels anything at all. It is important for their health to learn to find their own food and eat only the things that are natural to them, which do NOT include chocolate, ice cream or fried potatoes, or salted nuts or anything that doesn’t come out of a tree or from a native plant.

I gave up reading most of the comments here a long time ago because the lolspeak was actually more like impenetrablespeak. I’m not sure what motivated me to try again, probably because I too wanted to find if there were any other people on this site who were disturbed by this vignette and the health implications for the squirrel.

On my campus, when an unsuspecting food-carrying human walks by, it’s nothing out of the ordinary for one squirrel to distract him while the other grabs the food from his hand. I’ve seen guys lose McDonald’s cheeseburgers this way. I’ve also seen people have to get rabies shots from doing just what the genius in this video was doing. Four stars for the cute, but -1 for the lack of common sense and irritating narration.

Squirrels around here (lower east side of Manhattan) are very entertaining so i can relate to the “surprised” sound of the “voice”.

I love our squirrels and feed them everyday, Nuts, of course, and cherries in season. Cherries are good because water sources in a city are scarce for it’s wildlife. Having said that, squirrels are rodents and they will eat practically anything so ice cream is probably a “refreshing” change, as it is for us humans, on a hot summer day.

I too am appalled that these giggling morons think it’s *funny* to feed a wild animal some completely inappropriate “junk-food”: something which could be dangerous or even deadly, depending on what flavorings and additives are used, and what sort of wild animal is being fed.

So there are sane people who comment on these… I had to see if anyone else thought it was sad that someone was feeding wildlife. “Cute” animals that are fed often quickly become dead animals, for many many reasons. Sorry to ruin the fun, but it’s true.

while generally this is true, I’m not sure urban animals like squirrels & pigeons can be *prevented* from eating human food most of the time, since they can get into garbage so easily.
But if you’re out in the woods, feeding animals is teh bad for themz.

Alas, yes. There was a time when the LOLs were just that – humourous captions written as though misspelled by animals needing to spell phonetically because they couldn’t write English. But the kiddies here on the comments page deliberately misspell everything (to the point at which they’re stretching it far enough to spell *other* words, in their attempt to misspell), and it gets painful to wade through.

I’ll join you in pointing out that people food isn’t meant for wild animals, and cancer aside, cow’s milk + sugar + eggs + preservatives isn’t going to do any squirrel any good.

Growing up, my next door neighbor, a retired gentleman, had trained a wild squirrel to sit on his shoulder as he cleaned up the yard, using a kind of scooper to pick up nuts, which he would hand to the squirrel to nom on as he worked.

We ran him out of town for being a squirrel charmer.
