Not just that. Fur in water tends to poof out, it only slicks down when the animal is removed from water. The cat’s body actually looks bigger than it is, as well as the head looking slightly smaller.
It looks like a cat’s head on a puppy’s body – but the whole concept is just wrong.

this is a real story. The guy originally had built a suit for his small dog for the tune of about $40k. Then the dog ended up rescuing this cat from being strangled by a fence. Since then the story says the two were almost inseparable. When the dog would jump into the pool, the cat would follow. She didn’t seem to mind as long as her head did not get wet.
Her suit cost around $20k. Now there is no way to make the helmets waterproof so he had a vacuum system built in that sucks the air/water out from the bottom and puts fresh air back in from his tank. The tank the animals wear is just for backup.
And apparently he has never taken them diving outside the confines of his own pool and does not plan on it.

I find it clever in that it tells us something about ourselves. Though… I have to ask: Why a cat? Most cats doesn’t even like water unless they’ve been exposed to it alot and grown used to it. If you need to have an animal dive into the deapts of water wouldn’t a marine animal been better? How about an otter? A dolphin? A cat isn’t supposed to live under water, so why are they doing this?
I’d really like to get the backstory on this picture. It seems to be a bit odd to create a device to make a land-living animal be able to walk in water when theres so many other animals to use if you now are requiered to use them. I don’t think strapping a camera on a dolphin for a few hours would cause it that much harm. And if so, wouldn’t it cause more harm to a cat?

Agreed – if kitty didn’t want it, he’d at least have some good scratches up his arms. Some cats like water, and odd though it may seem, most animals can adapt to new things. Like scuba diving.

I found out that this segment, originally ran on Ripley’s Believe it or Not. They really care about pets, they have had a most amazing pets contest a few times. So they wouldn’t have let this happen, if it wasn’t safe for kittah.

That cat looks like its partly a Turkish Van, a breed of cat that actually likes water, and it is possible to make a seal with her hair good enough for this application. Also, the globe would cause the light to be refracted enough to make it look odd.

Hawkeye probably has a lage dose of Turkish Van in her genetic pool. They are famous for loving the water and liking to swim (though not usually *under* the water!) She has the right markings for a Turkish Van except for that black splotch. Vans will hop right in the tub with you if you let them.
I’m not a scuba diver, but I AM one of those exceedingly strange people who go into burning buildings…all you need is a little positive pressure in your mask and nothing gets in.
