I’ve said elsewhere, I think part of what’s making it worse is that we have no roadmap. Society creates traditions and rituals that are supposed to help the survivors, but we have a new kind of community here, and we don’t have rituals to lean on — yet. That leaves us without any familiar way of coping with grief. Add on top of that the fact that we really have only each other to understand the real intensity of loss, and outside of here we get a version of the same dismissive crap that happens when one loses a furkid (How can ANY loss in your life be reduced to, “It was only…” whether it’s an online friend or a furkid or anyone else???)… So we hurt, and we do it without many of the supports we tend to expect in mourning.

And this was so very abrupt….

I’m finding my comfort in the image of Ly in the Medow with the kitties, and in focusing on the sheer life and joy in my Cory-Bear kitten to balance the thoughts of death. But it’s still a shock, and I didn’t even know her all that well. I’m grieving for the cheezfrendz who were closer to her.

Well, how is being friends with someone online, who you communicate with, different from being friends with them in person?

It is all about KNOWING. You share ideas and thoughts. That is what friendship is about. Maybe you do not see them, or hear their voice (although I have spoken to Cheezefrends and seen their pics and even their webcams, so there, hahah!) or touch them, but isn’t friendship about KNOWING? You communicate witht he person. You don’t have to sit next to them on a park bench every week and eat a cheeseburger together to be friends. You can write to each other and get to know each other that way. It all boils down to communication, and however we do that, that is what is important. Getting to know that individual soul….no matter how we do it.
