I can only imagine what you’d say if you saw how I play with my cat. My kitty enjoys getting tickled on her stomach so she latches onto my fist/wrist, and then rubbed all over the carpet like a sponge. You’d think a cat would go nuts with that, but every time I do it, her tail is wagging and she’s purring at the end.

I guess you missed the part where I said they were purring? My Gally will often cuddle up next to me after.. and in some cases, just keep nudging my hand to do it again. She thinks it’s play time.
Another of my kitties (Eddie) would run through the house with a plastic bag wrapped around him, making noise. I finally caught up with him and gently pulled it off. He just sat there for a few minutes, meowing. Once I stopped petting him and put the bag down, he immediately jumped onto it, trying to get it back on. I draped it over him so it was on him again, and he happily ran off for another couple minutes. Is that abuse, since I put a bag around a kitty? Seriously, context and the temperament of the cat is EVERYTHING. You have no right to claim a cat is being abused or bothered in any way unless you know that cat and know how it reacts to things.

Okay, I just watched this multiple times, closely.
1) The cats are not being tightly held or restrained — any cat that actually wanted out of that grasp would be gone in a heartbeat
2) No piloerection — that’s hair standing on end, tail or otherwise — that I can see
3) Eyes aren’t dilated — a genuinely distressed cat will have minimal iris showing
4) Ears aren’t back — I only saw ears swivel once significantly, and even that was pretty mild
Yes, those cats are slightly annoyed at moments. They’re not in any genuine distress, though. They clearly trust the humans involved (look at the body language — they lean IN, not away). There are a LOT of cats out there, mine included, who seem to enjoy being annoyed — I do it with my trio during play, in different ways (eg, dragging a string across Angel’s sensitive spot on her lower spine, to make her whip around and pounce on it) and they demand it on a regular basis.
My partner Seanya is currently looking at the other videos by the same YouTube user, one about a rescued cat they have had neutered and are trying to find a home for. These guys, as far as I’m concerned, rock.

Hehe yeah my mom’s old cat used to love things like that too. There’s a ticklish spot most cats have in the crook of the hind leg, where it meets their sides. My cat isn’t ticklish there, but my parents’ old cat used to love it.
Like, I’d tickle her there, she’d purr like crazy and smack at me (her former owner had declawed her), I’d wave my hand back at her so she could swat some more. And if I stopped before she was done, she’d follow me, smack me again, then roll over and wait for me to get her belly again. lol Purring like crazy the whole time. Apparently she thought this was great.
If she wanted to stop, either she’d make a quick, angry mew to warn me she was done, or she’d just walk away. Kinda like how cats do to each other when they’re playing.

Will you people get a grip on yourselves? At any random moment I can pick up one of my 5 cats and get an irritated meow, whine or growl. Are you going to accuse me of abusing them? I dare you to. Those guys did nothing wrong at all to those cats. Learn what abuse really is before you start throwing accusations at people. Holding down a cat and filling it with over 150 staples from a staple gun is abuse, throwing an 8 week old kitten against a wall and killing it is abuse, deliberately running over a cat in it’s own yard is abuse, dowsing a cat with lighter fluid and then setting it on fire is abuse, those are all actual incidents that have happened in my hometown. Holding, gently bouncing and kissing a cat IS NOT ABUSE. If that’s abuse is then don’t ever touch your children again. All of those actions are what most parents do with their infants! To those getting aggressive over the users expressing concern over the cats:
Would you rather we not voice any uncertainties? The people who find themselves uneasy about the treatment of those animals have all been polite in their concerns and would probably appreciate polite responses in return. I think for the most part it’s not those cats, it’s a fear of (for example) a younger kid trying something like that and hurting the cat.
Please try to be less aggressive. I think everyone knows the difference between real abuse and something that could escalate. Let people have their opinions and concerns. It’s a lot more constructive and friendly to reassure peoples concerns (as many have tried)
than to beat people down verbally for perhaps a little OOT caring.
Actually, no, I think a lot of people don’t know the difference between real abuse and play — I’ve been here long enough to see people scream “abuse!!!” at every possible opportunity, with no idea of the context, which suggests that there are people who just automatically protest without ever thinking things through for longer than it takes to type a line or two of text. Not everyone “voicing concerns” has been polite about it, not one has said anything about kids trying it. Please note the sarcastic tone of comments like, “So, distressed miaowing is cute now? Okay…” Not one has said anything to support their assumption that it’s abuse, or suggested in any way that they’re concerned it might be abuse.
Voicing concern is one thing, especially if one can give a reason for it. Using terms like “torture” and demanding that the video be removed is something else altogether, especially when taking a moment to look at these cats in other videos makes it clear beyond any doubt that (as anyone who actually has a clue about feline body language could have told you anyway) these cats are loved and well-cared-for.
And please note that my own response was an analysis of the video, not an aggressive attack. I don’t like aggression, but frankly, the “these cats are abused” people were aggressive first.
Fair enough, I can understand that. The comments I have seen did seem quite calm about it (and for the record my own comment further above mentions kids – it’s kinda my concern).
All I’m trying to get across is that for those who genuinely have a few concerns, it’s not very comforting to read people dismissing them in a ‘shut up’ manner. Perhaps whilst not targetting individuals, it’s better to add something stating why these cats are fine – for example the fact they’re obviously not even trying to struggle away.
Maybe I’m being a bit soft but I know that this type of stuff can upset people and a little bit of reassurance goes a long way, as opposed to a ‘you’re wrong be quiet’ response.

No, the thing that caught my interest is this discussion. I’m actually quite surprised over the reactions from the ‘defenders’ of this vid. How can you not be happy about people showing concern for the animals you most likley love? Theres a lot of nasty stuff circulating on the internet with all sorts of animals being abused and there’s a large audience that find such material amusing to watch. Also a lot of people simply have little respect for animals in general. I seriously think, that though it’s not abuse to the cats, it’s not really funny. It’s kind of mean. The cats are content, and then picked up. Mothers pick up their babies when they cry, to comfort them. They are not comforting the cats, in fact, they are annoying them on purpose. (They even call what they’re doing “annoyance techniques.”)
I just don’t think it’s an appropriate video, I don’t think those guys are bad people, I just think it’s questionable behavior with a cat, dog, mouse, child, or anyone else.
My cat makes moofy noises too, they all do, but doing it for fun and taping it… I’m just not down with.

I don’t really think that it’s particularly mean, any more than a younger sibling harassing an older one is mean. I’m not even really sure they’re annoyed–somewhat disgruntled, maybe, but they have that tolerant “older sibling” air.
At any time these cats could have left, and at one point one of them did (when it was under the chair).
I will harass my cat when he’s just lounging around, and I’m a lot rougher than these guys are. Nothing violent! But I bat at his ears and whiskers and pat him repetitively until he fights back. If he’s in the mood he’ll growl at me (he thinks he’s ferocious–far from the truth).
If he’s not in the mood he just ignores me pointedly or leaves.
He gets even by pouncing on me when I’M just lounging around. And I don’t mind it.

My kitties beg to be picked up and then make all those warbling noises. then you put ‘em down and they tear thru the house like you wound them up and rush back to do it again! There is absolutely no abuse there. NO ONE should let their young children play unattended with their pets, so “a kid copying it and hurting a pet” is really a parent’s negligence, not the resposibility of the site or the creators of the video. I thought it was refreshing to see guys who’s kiss their kitties on a video, it was really sweet. that kind of meowing is like a little kid getting ticled and protesting. if it goes on they will express displeasure, but they’re fine for the time being! SO not abusive!

Really, we (the people who laughed out loud) are all sorry that you (the people who did not enjoy it) were displeased. But it is hilarious and well made, and deserves to stay right where it is.
Are you seriously telling me that you have never in your life tried to purposely annoy a human just to be funny? Hugging and kissing them too much, pinning them down and tickling them. People make noises when you did this sort of thing to them, just like kitties do. And people get “annoyed” at it just like kitties do, but they secretly love all of the attention and lovings.

I just watched the full video, TJ. Loved the kitteh fist bump! I think the videos are great, personally. My cat doesn’t like to be held, so to make her yodel, I moderately annoy her while she’s scratching her ear. This can usually be accomplished by attempting to pet her while she is scratching. I suspect she’s more easily annoyed than most cats.
Also, I don’t think you’re so much the “humble sidekick to the George Clooney of cats” as you are the “Harpo Marx of cats.” And everyone knows Harpo was the cool one.

However, there are some adverse reactions from certain cats in the house that shall remain nameless… USHI! So many of you have presented such excellent comments on this. most have to agree to disagree. One persons play is another persons abuse. I see this in my catlover/guardian friends; “To Claw or to Declaw”- I don’t declaw mine myself, I just accommodate. I’m thankful for anyone who chooses to give rescues & strays the gift of many years of loving life they wouldn’t have had otherwise-declawed or not, annoyed of not. All of you on both sides (some trolls excepted?) have plainly given just this gift to your companions! *Applause*
Of course annoying cats is fun. It’s the most fun you can have with them. It doesn’t mean you’re hurting them. It’s just funny how they can lick their own (and eachother’s) hiney hole and chase a laser pointer around the house like a maniac, but get too cuddly with them and they get all stuck-up. Fun!

Having witnessed cat abuse and the way cats behave after being abused, I have a hard time agreeing with you. Cats have to love their human an awful lot to put up with being annoyed like this, especially for the amount of time and takes it must have taken to finish this video. If the cats felt they were being abused, they wouldn’t have been as relaxed as they were in their owner’s arms.

How about the Jesus cat picture, where it “looks like the cat is walking on water.” How do you think the cat got that way? Was the cat jumping into the lake for funsies? I doubt it. This website is full of pictures of actual animal abuse. Cat yodeling doesn’t even come close.
Exactly–if you’re going to be upset over this video and not the countless still shots that are clearly worse offenses, then I really can’t sympathize with you for being upset about this video. How many still shots on this site are of clearly perturbed, provoked, antagonized, or possibly even abused felines? It’s easy to look at a photo of a cat going >:O and forget that someone had to do something to make him act that way.
