As you may know, I own the domain prysmcat.org — I registered it some time ago. Currently, all that’s on it is the blog for Eva and Cory. I’d like to do more with it. This is my tentative plan, subject to refinement and alteration:

    * a blog where I’ll do articles perodically on cats — behaviour, health, physiology, social life, fostering, rescue, nutrition, various subjects like that, but with a slant towards behaviour — not just problems, but discussion of good things, too — as often as possible, I’ll include pics, videos, etc

    * a forum, with a thread for in-depth discussion of each article — and as often as possible, for people to talk about how it relates to their own cat specifically – eg, an article on feline relationships with non-feline pets, and people will be encouraged to share their stories about their cats with other pets

    * the forum will also have areas for people who are fostering adults or babies, looking after ferals, or otherwise doing anything related to cat welfare, and for general chat about felines — probably areas for non-feline chat and non-animal-related chat, too — this has a lot of flexibility

    * if someone has a specific question they can ask; I’m not going to guarantee I can help, but I’ll do what I can

    * and I think I’ll add a PayPal link — I will NOT charge for any of this, but if someone has an extra couple of dollars, cool — whether I keep Cory-Bear or not, a little extra towards kitty vet bills or helping future orphans is a useful thing

I’m hoping to do the same kind of thing as an informal drop-in class, if I can just get it organized and started — Val, the cruelty officer and foster coordinator at the Humane Society, is quite enthusiastic about backing that.

With any luck, I can eventually expand it into actually doing in-person consults locally, and things like that.

My Obedience teacher is a veterinarian, and her sense, along with that of the vet tech I had for Health & Behaviour last semester, is that there’s a huge void as far as the behaviour of pet cats. Some vets are starting to take it more seriously, but not all, and it can be hard to get much time with a vet, just like getting enough time with a doctor. I can’t just go find a job doing this, I’m going to have to essentially create it for myself, if it’s viable at all.

So, any thoughts, my friends? *looks hopeful and attentive*

    • Ack… brev… briv… shortniss in riting, ai needs tu learning it! *slaps foarhed*

    • nightshayde says:

I think this sounds like a wonderful idea, PK! What’s more, it sounds to me like this is a “calling” for you — something you’re meant to do. Helping animals is clearly your thing. :D

      • 3kittymomma says:

YAY PK!! Ifinkso iz veri gud idear! I know I haz learned manni things heer in Cheezland, but a website dedicated tu this topic kuld bii valuable tool for us kitteh peeple.

    • booklion says:

Iz GRATE idea, p-k! It fills an important need, and you would be so bery, bery good at it.

      • booklion says:

As far as the money part goes, I don’t know. The website is how people find out about you and your pet behavior services…will you charge for consultations? Eventually, maybe put together a booklet or some other artifacts that people buy? Maybe it’s time to start emailing with other animal behavior consultants and find out how much they charge for services.

    • nyghtwind says:

Ai think dat dis iz a wondermus idear! Dere aer lots of kittehs adn there people who can use a place to talk adn get good information from other peeps. Just look at how manee cheezpeeps has askeded yoo qwestions since yoo went to vettech skool.

Dere are many peoples hoo look at goggie behavior butt (!) knot near;y enough people who try to figure out the kittehs.

      • booklion says:

Yup. A friend of a friend consulted a dog behavioral specialist (that was who was available) about a problem with one of her cats, and then even consulted a pet psychic, but neither was any help. Really, you could even do international consults.

    • Fanks, guis. Yu iz teh enkurijing. :D

Booklion, aifinkso that’s an excellent idea, checking to see what’s being charged by others. I’m feeling an odd mix of confidence and caution at this point: a distinct awareness that I don’t know everything I’d like to know, but a sense that I do know enough to be of use. I’m never going to be able to hold up a sheet of paper and say, “I’m now officially a kitty behaviourist,” ’cause it just doesn’t exist, so it’s going to take some work convincing the back of my mind that I deserve to be taken seriously. Yet, if I’m going to keep the kids in gushifuds, I either need to make some money from it, or get a “real” job and do it as a vocation/hobby on the side.

NS, you be right. If I can make life better for kitties and their humans, and keep some kitties from being dumped for behavioural reasons… that’s worth everything. I have a sinking feeling that numbers would show more cats dying from euthanasia in shelters than from all the nasty diseases like panleukopenia and FeLV and all combined…

*trots off tu start setting up website an fink abowt subject fur nawt-sekkund articlol*

      • OnleeKitteh says:

PK: your idea of a “real” job at first and do as a vocation/hobby on the side is a good idea. That will bring in steady money and you can take the time to develop the other side as time goes by. Who knows – you may become the first official “kitty behaviourist”. Like I said, this is your heart job, so study hard and take it easy. As you go, jot down all the ideas you want to pursue and develop the methodology and means to strike out on your own.

      • tessm says:

  25. coyoteman says:

    Lionelcat-

That’s an intersting version of the story. Different from what I heard. The version I heard was that the Emperor of Japan was resting under a tree near a Buddhist temple while waiting out a thunderstorm. There was a cat on the temple porch which frantically beckoned the Emporer to come to him. The Emperor finally rose and went to the cat. Just then a lightning bolt struck the tree and blew it up. For saving his life the Emperor bestowed a fortune on the cat and the temple. So to this day you see statues of beckoning cats called “maneki neko” all over Japan.
