          Yes, I live with two — and have had cats all my life – 30 plus years.
          I love this site. But, there’s no way this cat got into this predicament on its own. This is not something to argue over – do you think? ANY photo with a tiny whiff of cruelty to any creature should not be posted as being ‘ok’ and funny. We don’t know what the cat was going through for this ‘funny’ picture. But if kitty wasn’t strong enough to get OUT of the cushions before the picture was taken, it wasn’t strong enough to get into them… Someone, therefore, was ready with the camera to take the picture, once the cat had been put between the cushions. How do we know it wasn’t in pain? Cats, my vets tell me, suppress a lot of what they experience till it’s almost unbearable for them.
          Yes, I’ve seen stranger stuff — my big kitty a year ago squeezed through a tiny space & explored the crawl space between two floors of my building. I thought I couldn’t find how he got into the crawl space, because the opening looked too, too small.
          But, be logical — this photo is likely a set up. The cat doesn’t look happy, he looks resigned.

            I don’t think you can judge from one still photo what is going on exactly. My interpretation was that the cat was squeezing through the gap between the cushions for some reason known only to himself. I have seen cats do things just like that.

    Okay… to the “this is cruel” people:

    If you’re seriously concerned about animal cruelty, haul your tails to the nearest animal shelter and volunteer. Learn what animal cruelty really is, and do something useful to help fight it.

    This is a healthy cat. At worst, someone got silly an tucked him between the cushions. An abused cat would be freaking out instead of lying there. It’s entirely possible that the cat got there himself, if those cushions are as soft as they look to me — I’ve seen cats do odder things.

    We don’t know the story behind this picture. Banning everything that has even a remote chance of being abuse isn’t going to actually do anything to stop cruelty to animals, and honestly, I could probably come up with an abuse backstory for almost every pic on the site if I tried (I don’t intend to).

    Wailing that a probably innocent picture is abuse just trivializes abuse.

    The regulars here have some of the most loved and well-cared-for pets on the planet, and many of them help with local shelters or otherwise do practical things to fight real abuse. You’re preaching to the choir, so to speak.

    Since some people only listen if there are qualifications attached: I’ve lived with animals my whole life, rescued many cats on my own (two of my three are rescued strays), and have recently gone back to college in my mid-30s so I can get the education I need to get a job doing animal rescue. I volunteer at my local shelter along with having classes there, and am fostering two orphaned babies. Do I think this makes me superior? Nope, but it does mean I have some idea what I’m talking about on this subject.

      I didn’t mean to imply you don’t know what you’re talking about. I said I disagree with the photo being posted.

      I’ve done all the same things you say you’ve done, seen all the abuse you say you’ve seen, & more, unfortunately.
      It all starts with the assumption that the pets are inferior, and our possessions to do with as we choose. That’s what I believe this picture shows: someone doing what they choose with a pet, possibly against its will.

      We simply disagree. We don’t know that this is a healthy cat, and I believe it didn’t like what was going on. Neither of us can ‘prove’ our point. But, why take the chance in encouraging the sick minds that are out there?

      One thing I feel strongly about is that taking this picture off the site or protesting it in NO WAY trivializes abuse.

      FYI, I have volunteered, I have given tons of money. I’m in a position each week to help abandoned animals, and I do. No one’s ‘right’ here, but I am absolutely within my rights, as are you, to voice my opinion.

      Keep responding to me, I’ll keep responding to you, as best as I can with the time I have. There’s no anger in me about this, I believe we do share a common passion for the rights of animals, though we differ in our beliefs about this photo.

      Stay on a soapbox, my friend – it’s the way to truth.
      There’s more at stake here than mere opinions.

        I’m always glad to know someone else is doing something active to help animals that need it.

        And, yes, some things are certainly a matter of perspective and opinion. Animals as objects rather than living things, though, is certainly not a matter of perspective, and I’m glad you’re speaking from an actual thought-out position rather than being one of the knee-jerk caretrolls who wander through here and scream about anything and everything. Whether or not I agree about this picture, I do respect that.

        Since I have a million things to do today, none of which will go faster with a 6.7oz kitten either tucked into my shirt or in a sling against my body (he gets upset when removed, and when he gets upset, he starts sneezing, and we’re trying to get him over a URI)… I’m going to have to let this conversation rest at that.
