Behaviour-view: It is also very intresting! He/she doesn’t realy know what to make of it, he/she can see a cat, but it’s flat and doesn’t move! What an odd experience for him/her. I’m very intrested in animal behaviour and this video is both cute and intresting! (It’s a cat, how can’t it be?)

This supports my theory that most cats don’t really recognize themselves in mirrors, so much as recognize a pattern of spots or shapes in the feline face. It triggers a species-face recognition feature in the brain, much like humans have. My spotty cat reacts to a mirror, but my grey and white does not, yet the latter will react to pictures of naturally patterned cat faces.
That would go along with theories that cats, like most all reptiles and most mammals, aren’t ’self-aware’.
That’s interesting, about your gray and white- I’ll have to try that with mine.
However, I have a cat who reacts the exact way as the cat in the video to anything which smells different than he’s used to- any new item in the house, or anything that smells strongly (wet paint, undried glue, etc) gets the “sniff and leap away” treatment.
It’s not reacting to the fact it looks like a cat – it’s how cats react to the smell of acrylic paints – the same way they do to the smell of toothpaste.
