Aw…{{{{P-K}}}}}, keep breeving. Dog people shuld NEVVER handle cats. That’s why, when I livved in a big enuff city to have cat-only vet clinics, I took my boy there. I think in this circumstance, it was not the difference between techniques 1 and 2, but a case of clueless and insensitive teacher instructing even more clueless student.

You are of course absolutely right PK. Especially with these poor kitties — they should be erring on the side of gentle, not treating them like unfeeling test cases. As you realize, most of them will have had bad experiences and should not be traumatized further.

I disagree that dogs need to be told who is alpha in an exam — the same techique should be used on dogs as you talked about with the cats. My 6 year old Springer will let anyone do anything to her, as long as they do not try to physically restrain her. If they do she WILL fight and she is a very strong dog. Hold her leg nice and she will watch you put the needle in and get blood, hold her down and you can’t even cut her nails.

She never starts any fight, but believe you me, she will finish each and every one that is brough to her, people or dogs.

I stopped going to one vet becaue it is their “policy” to restrain all dogs. They say it is for “safety.”

Unfortunately time is money and for some vets that is what is most important.

yesh, i reely fink it needs to depend on teh kitteh. sum kittehs iz better to just taek control an get teh pleh ober wif. but tehy kan taking it. ovvers (liek teh pore trawmatized kittehs at teh shelter) needs gentle handling. iz up to teh pursun taking kare ob tehm to deside, based on how kitteh seems to be doing, wich way iz bestest. wif us, shiro-kitteh seems to doing bestest wif #1 – him duznt want to be tehr an no bein nise and gentle iz going to chanje taht, so best to just getting it over wif. not kno abowt kumo – haznt had enuff eggspeirnece taking him to teh vet. but ovver kittehs i’ve had wuld do better wif no. 2. tehy will relax an feel better wif teh gentle slow handling.
