A lot depends on how they act towards me. I know that seems wrong, but when I am comfortable with the Vet and tech, I am much less likely to notice small movements. Our Vet (40+ in practice and had the highest GPA in the history of Iowa State University – one of the best vet schools in the country ) is so good at talking and examining that the exam and the “scruff hold” isn’t that obvious. The cats and dog seem to know who’s in control but wont hurt them unnecessarily.
Also, our vet’s techs come in first and ask questions and pet the kids so they have a chance to calm down so they are ready for the Vet.

He didn’t deserve to have her yoink him away from me like he was going to maul the BC out of me, I had him still and he would have relaxed as soon as I eased up on the restraint.
I understand needing to be efficient and get all animals seen, but this was just a mess.
We’re using the animals at the HS to practice on, but we’re also supposed to be making life a little better for them, giving them some extra attention, watching for behavioural or health issues that should be noted.
Our normal teacher is of the school of thought that with cats, minimal restraint is best, and you ramp it up as necessary — you can turn a friendly cat into a demon by scruffing them unnecessarily. This approach works well for me. I can, in fact, do a physical exam on a cat completely alone, rather than our usual pairs, something that I think impressed my normal teacher. I automatically respond to the cat’s mood without even thinking about it, to make sure what’s necessary gets done with everyone safe, cat included, but I don’t use any more than I must.
My usual partner is very much a dog person, and of course with dogs, you establish that you’re alpha and they’re not. She admits she finds cats puzzling, although she likes them. she tends not to allow for time for calming/cuddling breaks for the cat, just wants to “get it done.”
Today we had a replacement for our teacher — she’s great, we have her for another class, but she’s more of the farmer-ish school of thought, that all animals need to know that they can’t get away with anything and they’ll just have to deal with it. She’s not mean or impatient or rough, just rather direct.
It seemed like all the cats were nuts today, even a friendly cuddly one. It was really starting to bug me, especially the pair who kept right on examining a cat who was screaming, yowling, thrashing, had been muzzled, and they were trying to get this lovely calico into a cat-bag. she wasn’t on the list as needing an exam, it was just a standard physical. The noise, of course, upset every other cat in the room… and our teacher did nothing until after the rest of us had simply given it up as a lost cause and returned our cats to their kennels.
But the bit that really got me was at the end. My partner was looking for a cat to practice restraints on, one that would be quiet and easygoing. She chose one I TOLD her not to take… it was the one I did the solo exam on a couple of weeks ago. I wrote in his chart, everywhere possible, that he’s NOT moody like someone else said, he just doesn’t like being cornered between two people and manhandled. CC knows what he might’ve been though, he came from a household with at least a dozen other cats.
She went and got him anyway. He was okay while she was practicing. I just stayed out of the way and did some microscope stuff, so as not to crowd him. She didn’t notice the ears starting to go back during restraints, or the tailtip, or the pupils, and she wouldn’t have listened if I told her.
Then the teacher came over and asked my partner to show her three diffrerent restraints. And the ears went out sideways and back, and he growled, and neither paid the slightest attention. He was on a table between them.
But she did the restraints.
Then the teacher told me to come show her what I know.
He was already upset, the poor baby, and not only were the teacher and I bracketing him, but my partner was right there watching too. It isn’t his fault he bit me hard enough to make my finger bleed.
Why the heck did she either ignore or not notice that he was winding up to freak out? Why was she calling the lovely little tortie we had first a b*tch (only half jokingly) because she was scared and I never got enough time between steps in the exam to calm her more than halfway?
We’re supposed to be caring for these animals, but every cat that came into our room today went back to its cage upset and stressed and NOT in better shape than they were in beforehand.
And it’s… just… not right, somehow.

It sounds to me that you have some sort of natural gift for “reading” & dealing with kitties — a gift that others in the profession might not have. Can you consult with the regular teacher & share your feelings of uneasiness? The very question you asked us might prove for a healthy discussion in class — the balance between time-management & nurturing … and also maybe the differences between dealing with cats and dealing with dogs.

You are of course absolutely right PK. Especially with these poor kitties — they should be erring on the side of gentle, not treating them like unfeeling test cases. As you realize, most of them will have had bad experiences and should not be traumatized further.
I disagree that dogs need to be told who is alpha in an exam — the same techique should be used on dogs as you talked about with the cats. My 6 year old Springer will let anyone do anything to her, as long as they do not try to physically restrain her. If they do she WILL fight and she is a very strong dog. Hold her leg nice and she will watch you put the needle in and get blood, hold her down and you can’t even cut her nails.
She never starts any fight, but believe you me, she will finish each and every one that is brough to her, people or dogs.
I stopped going to one vet becaue it is their “policy” to restrain all dogs. They say it is for “safety.”
Unfortunately time is money and for some vets that is what is most important.

I think it winds up taking longer if you don’t take the time to be patient with cats. It’s often the same with kids. Sorry you and the kittehs had a hard day. I hope tomorrow is better!
#2 would also be more likely to calm the human too if necessary (that’s what I think anyway). That’s how my current and past vets have been; they take the time to pet and praise my cats while doing exams and other things.
