There shuddent be any problems – but the mum should not have any litterboks duty and always wash her hands after handling the kitteh.
The parasites can also be found i raw meat – so she should always wash her hands thoroughly after cooking with meat (and cook it propperly…).
Other than that – it should be fine – I have friends and neighbourghs than haven’t had any problems! (but been aware of the risk and taken their precautions…) :-)

toxoplasmosis is only dangerous to women during pregnancy, when it can cause abortions, and people with compromised immune systems, like AIDS etc. Most humans are exposed to toxoplasmosis in their lives, and it’s harmless except under those circumstances.
Even for pregnant women, it’s only dangerous if 1) they’ve never been exposed to it previously, and 2) if they’re handling cat feces, like scooping the litter box.
The baby is NOT going to get sick from having a cat around.
Many cats, just like many humans, have been exposed to toxoplasmosis. They only shed it once in their life, for a few days. Period.
They DO need to be careful not to leave the cat and baby alone together, because cats will of course scratch if messed with, and cat scratches can get nasty.
Getting rid of the cat after the baby is born is _utterly pointless_. The only risk was to the mom during her pregnancy, and even that is easily avoided. THERE IS NO RISK TO A NEWBORN BABY OF TOXOPLASMOSIS. Seriously, we just spent a long time in class last week talking about this.
Call a vet, if your neighbour might listen to them.
Frankly, there’s more danger to kids from an uncovered sandbox than there is from having a cat in the home.

      • Nennepus says:

yeah! de pro-kitteh and bebbeh-troika has spokin!!! :-D

      • rose says:

yah, thank you prysma and all. i mentioned to them that i thought as long as she stays away from the litter it will be ok–as far as toxoplasmosis goes–but there’s a little more to it, it sounds like. i will tell them all this. but, you know, they have new parent jitters. they were trying hard a couple of weeks ago to find a home, but still have the kitty so maybe they are relaxing about it.

mebbeh u cud menshun dat bebeh hoominz leerns lot frum growin up wif bebeh animlos… dem lerns dat der bes borders adn u habs 2 treet odders wib respect… dem lerns 2bee naic adn shaer. dem awlso miet leern hoa 2 hedbonk propurrleh… ;)

        • I do hope they relax. A healthy cat is no risk to the baby if supervised and a little care is taken. The shelters in the US are swamped right now, and finding a home for a cat isn’t going to be easy at all.
Besides, it’s great for kids to grow up around animals. :)
*rigglols owt uv scrubs an induljis own gnu-parint jitters bai chekking awn Eva-kittin*
