I think they think seeing the bottom of the bowl means DOOM, so they have to keep it covered in hopes that the cat fud will grow parthenogenically while they are away.

Ebby used to always drag food out of the bowl and eat it from the floor. Clawed used to take a big mouthful, shake his head to rid his jaw of the excess, and chew. Floor-fallen kibbles were never to be consumed.
