  17. LD0ne says:

this makes me sad.. my cat is so bad she won’t stop pissing on stuff i mean we have 2 cat litter boxes i clean them all the time she just won’t stop pissing on the furniture i can’t figure out what to do my parents want to get rid of her and i don’t know how to fix this but i’m about to lost my cat and i’m so upset…

    • Have you taken her to the vet to have her checked for a urinary tract infection?

      • LD0ne says:

she had a urinary tract infection thats when she started pissing on the furniture and she hasn’t stopped since… its like she thinks the cat litter is what is causing her pain
we brought her to the vet and got medication for her but that was months ago and
the medication looked like it was working… i just think she’s pissed off cause she’s
inside all day and we won’t let her outside like she wants to we live in an area with lots
of animals outside coyotes bears and big racoons included i’m scared to death to
let her outside cause i’m afraid she’ll run off and not come home..

        • I have to run to a doctor’s appointment right now, and I have a couple other errands to do on the way back, but let me think about this.
You’re right that they can start associating the litter box with pain.
Have you had her re-checked since then to make sure the infection is gone?
Switching cat litter might be an option. Or the boxes might be in places she doesn’t feel safe/comfortable or too close to her food or sleeping places or in places that are too high traffic. If you have other cats, do they ever corner her in or try to exclude her from, the boxes? Has she been spayed? Are the litter boxes big enough for her, but she can get into them easily (no high sides plus joint stiffness or anything)?
There’s a LOT of combined experience here, so don’t panic.
          {{{LD0ne}}}
*runruns tu catch bus, but will be back*

          • LD0ne says:

um they are pretty big cat litter boxes i have to get large bags for them we have been
using Fresh Step (i think thats what its called) since we brought her home from the
pound. the boxes are positioned 1 is in the back room by the heater and one is in
the kitchen over by the plants (which is by the furniture that she likes to pee on)
we only have 1 cat but we do have a dog as well yes she is spayed she is a big cat maybe i should take some pictures of the locations of the litter boxes and stuff for you?

            • Has she been checked again to make sure the urinary infection is actually gone?
She could be associating the litter with the pain, so if you try a different cat litter, it might help. Nothing scented. Change only one, not both, and see what she thinks.
Is she consistently peeing in the same places? Where? Floor, on chairs, up against walls, on carpet or linoleum?
              How old is she?
Has she been declawed? (can cause physical and psychological stuff that can lead to this)
How are you cleaning the areas she’s gone in before? Try scrubbing them with vinegar (and wash and clothes or blankets in vinegar) — it’s great for getting rid of the smell, so it won’t draw her back, and any lingering scent may discourage her.
Does she pee a LOT? Really frequently, or a really high volume, or both? Drink a LOT of water?
Don’t worry ’bout the pictures for right now, but I’m going to keep tossing questions at you in hopes that something might click. :)

              • skwirrlgrrl says:

                my 2 scents? (sowry)
if u has confirmed that teh UTI is gone, maybe try putting hur in a confined area wif teh box so she is forced to use it…? and maybe when she sees it doesn’t hurt hur, will be ok?

                • LD0ne says:

as for the confined area we tried that she just refuses to use the litterbox at all and pisses on whatever she can find in that case she’ll piss on floor on seats boxes whatever as long as it is not the litter box she hates being locked in a room

              • LD0ne says:

                ok here comes check list
1.) yes we brought her back vet said she was ok
2.) she consistently pisses on the most expensive leather couches in the living
                room.
3.) she’s 2 years old give or take a few months
4.) yes declawed when we got her
5.) we have been using Scotch Guard to clean the mess
i dunno if she pees a lot i’m not home during the day and i mean i usually clean
it as much as i can but usually once a week for actually changing the litter to new litter
and every night for removing all the clumps
ummm i think that covers it

                • LD0ne says:

we have been thinking of locking her up in the bathroom whenever we leave or go to bed but then she pisses on everything that isn’t the litter box and constantly meows and meows all night

                • Leather? *perks ears* JUST on the leather?
Some cats don’t react well to leather… no one’s sure why. Something to do with the odour? (they have a sense of smell about thousand times stronger than ours)
                  .
Being declawed could also be part of the issue, for sure. Declawing removes the entire first knuckle of each digit (look at your hands… now imagine having not just your fingernails removed but the whole knuckle they’re on). It can cause long-term phantom pain, sensitivity, and some serious psychological territorial issues in some cats. A softer cat litter (like Yesterday’s News or something along those lines) might feel better on her paws.
                  .
I’m going to look into the leather thing. If the vet says she’s healthy, then I think the odds are pretty substantial that it’s one of these two issues.
                  *trots off to do research*

                  • LD0ne says:

of course its the leather its the most expensive furniture we have lol i
mean she wouldn’t pee on the cheap stuff that wouldn’t get my mom mad
as for the declawed thing we didn’t get her declawed she was declawed when
we got her so before all u cruelty to cats people kill me for that one i rescued
this cat from the pound like 2 days before the mass euthanasia day so she
is one of the lucky ones.

                    • *nodnod* Cats do come into shelters declawed, and they need to be adopted too. I was just trying to give you some idea how she may feel. Cats urinate partly as a territory marking thing, and without her claws, the odds of her feeling insecure and trying to mark her territory more increase quite a lot.
                      .
She’s not after the leather because it’s expensive. Some times and places, urine has been used to tan leather; that isn’t what’s generally used now, but the tanning agents may smell very similar to uric acid to them. To them, especially to one who’s declawed and could have territorial issues, that would be the place that every instinct is telling her she HAS to mark to establish her territory. Y’see?
I’m trying to find a solution now that won’t damage the furniture.

                      • LD0ne says:

i am sorry i didn’t mean to come off soundin mean i’m just really
pissed off that this keeps happening and i dunno how much longer
her cuteness is going to save her from goin back to that hell hole that
they call a humane society center…

                        • Feliway might do it!
It’s an artificial version of the scent cats leave when they cheek-rub
things, it makes them feel safe.
It’s apparently safe on most surfaces as a spray (it does recommend testing first). You can also get it as a room diffuser. Scentless to humans, very comforting to cats.
IF I’m right, and I can’t guarantee that I am but I think it actually makes sense, then if she feels safer, instead of feeling a drive to keep asserting her territory, then the behaviour might stop.
I would try both: switch one litter box to something easier on her paws, and pick up some Feliway (can’t help you with how/where… your vet can probably tell you if you call). That might do the trick and everyone can relax.

                        • This has some info:
                          catfaeries.com/feliwayfaq.html
                          .
                          I hope all this helps.

                        • skwirrlgrrl says:

I had to get teh Feliway diffusers when I brought Gummi in with the OLKs and it helped cut WAY back on teh hissiness and teh pissiness. It’s not cheep but it does halp.
I found it was teh cheepest at entirelypets.com

                        • LD0ne says:

i can’t believe that declawing causes that much pain i thought just
like any wound it would heal up but i didn’t know that they always
felt pain with that… damn it if i could find those bastards that did
that i would cut there fingers off and see how they like it…

                        • Fanks, Leeza. :)
Mai vet sujjested ai trai it fur mai Loki’s anksietee (kitteh wif aksietee disordur, ai haz wun! an him been wif me sinse 8 weeks owld, nebber aboosed) but ai just bildeded mai lyf arown gibing him a stabul skejool an lawts uv reeshuransis insted. But if taht nawt wurked, Feliway wudda been nekst step.

                        • It DOES heal, but anyone who’s ever had an amputation will tell you that the nerves sometimes feel like the amputated part is still there, and sometimes it hurts.
Declawed cats aren’t in chronic pain but it is a significant amputation, and it does have a lot of consequences that people don’t tend to think about. Physical AND mental.
Do you think you could give that a try? The litter (Yesterday’s News is a recycled newspaper-based litter that’s actually used right after declawings to be easy on the paws) and the Feliway?

                        • skwirrlgrrl says:

this does prolly not apply to u, LD0ne…
but just fyi, my kitteh Dixie.. was declawed on hur front feets, and when she was 9 yrs old, she started having trouble jumping on teh bed, and acting liek somethin was hurting hur, so I took her to teh vet, and teh xrays showed that hur claws were regrowing under hur pads.
I had to have her re-declawed at teh age of 9, and let me tell u, I had never heard a cat scream in pain before, but they CAN, and I would never ever ever do that to a cat again.
                          .
and I is really note saying this for u, but for anyone out there lurking that is considering declawing.. plz don’t do this to ur kitteh. :(
