I used to watch the original Japanese version of this show, but never got into the American version when that came along. I can’t even remember if it was subtitled. I don’t think it was. It was just interesting and the regular critics and the host were a hoot. I can remember times when I couldn’t even figure out what the secret ingredient was because it was such odd food I’d never seen before.
I loved how the chairman always had some pithy saying to go with the foods. I kept a list for a while.

Just for a moment…for whatever reason I love cooking shows, and the original Iron Chef reruns are no exception. Although the majority of the ingredients they used I would never be able to eat, you really can learn an awful lot about world culture from observing cooking, and even though the dubbing made the show kind of silly, the commentators tended to be really insightful, except for the celebrity guests that is.
Now, back to our regularly scheduled silly.
