I has actually petted a wild skunk kit once and did not get skunked because I wuz gentle and made no abrupt moves toward it.
I wuz nappin in teh warm afternoon sun one day (out of doors) and felt sewmezthin lickin mah finger. it wuz teh skunklet gettin sewmez of teh salt (i think) from mah perspirashun. It wuz bowt teh samez size as dis one seems 2 be. I used one finger 2 stroke itz head and looked carefully around 4 teh MOMSKUNK. She wuz nowhere 2 be seen.
I wuz calm and when I wuz done pettin teh little critter, I baked away S-L-O-W-L-Y sew and not 2 get it upset. Still no Momskumk in sight, O got on mah Bike and rode away into teh sunset, Un skunked.
Skonx is very wunderfulz and mellow lill critters and yew muss nawt be afraidz ob dem unlest theres a chantz that they will get frightened. I has heard dat dey make grate petz if you had dem deskonked but I am not shir how I feels about dat, it mite be like habbin a cat declawed.
Ai wuz on a crooz a fyoo yeerz ago — wun uv teh purrrformerz had deskonked skonks as pets & part uv himz act. Ai noe 2 uv dem wuz naymed “Coco,” and “Chanel.” Donut remembring teh 3rd wun. He let pplz pet wun uv dem — she wuz bery sweet & bery sawftee.
I once put what I thought was an injured or sick young skunk in my car to bring home. It had already sprayed, so I figured it wouldn’t be able to spray again for awhile. I fed it some warm milk with a syringe, then put it in a cage in my shed overnight. Poor baby was no better in the morning. I brought it in the house and put it in the laundry room. It was SO beautiful, with sleek black fur and the cutest beady little black eyes. I named it Ralph. I fed it throughout the day, and it would eat some, then turn itself around and settle back down to sleep. The next day it was no better, though, so I took it to the vet, who felt it best to euthanize it. Her diagnosis was distemper. I cried.
(my “awesum” commint wuz fer catslave’s happy story, nawt fer yers, 4.5, which is so sad. At least yew did wut yew could to help.)
