  8. munch says:

Actually, the new laws permits wireless HDTV transmissions. However, you still need a new HD-capable receiver for the signals. Time to upgrade the bunneh!

    • None says:

Just +1′ing this. The switch doesn’t mean free TV goes away just that you have to get it through a digital transmission now.

    • penguin_man says:

Time to stop buying service and see what happens. Oh wait, some people don’t know how to live without it.

    • catalogical humor says:

Not only will you still have free over-the-air transmissions, but your rabbit ears may actually still work if they have good UHF reception. I was running my new digital TV that way, though I recently spent $20 on a better digital-optimized antenna to improve reception.

    • tparadox says:

Agreed. Buy a converter box (and maybe an amplified antenna) and you’ll be covered. Of course, it may be less confusing to just buy service and let the nice young men with the tools handle it.

  11. Hermione says:

Dis eggsackly how I feels abowt whoel DTV thingamabobby. I has ears on mah telly and I gets a few shows. Why we makeing me pay and stuff nao?

    • Ricia says:

They’re not making you pay. Well other then needing to buy a converter box and that’s a one time buy. There are still free channels they’re just digital now. Oh and you still need an antennae so Mr. Bunny will still have a job.

Honestly, while this LOL is amusing it’s completely inaccurate.

    • catalogical humor says:

The lolcat is wrong. If you want to continue receiving free TV broadcasts, you can, and the picture quality will be better. And, if you end up buying a converter box that’s $40 or less so that it is covered by the coupon, then your net expense is zero.

      • Tribble says:

Box iz $40 or more. We got it off of the internet. Had to pay about $55 I think. Coupon only covers $40. Lost most of my stations with the box. Can only get CBS now.

        • catalogical humor says:

It is true that digital reception may be different as it is primarily UHF, and that where analog will let you see a snowy, bad picture with digital it’s all or nothing. A better antenna may be needed. Consult antennaweb.org for location-specific help.

  12. Niklas says:

Is this referencing something that is happening in the US in February?

    • gremlin says:

Ohai, Niklas. Yes, it’z teh digital convershun. TV goes digital. So peepuls hasta upgrayd theyr ekwipmint or git a converter box. Iffn they still wantz to watch broadkast TV, ennyway!

      Here is moar details: http://www.dtv.gov/

    • Yesh.
      .
Inna US, der wall beh no moar telebision dat beh broadkast anna log. Ebreefing beh broadkast in “high definition”, an tew watch telebision anee moar, yew must hab either a high definition telebision, oar a conberter bawks tew allow yew tew watch eet onna anna log telebision.
      .
      Duz dis ‘splain eet?

    • catalogical humor says:

US television will shut off analog TV broadcasts to free up bandwidth for digital television and services.

The post above me is wrong: Digital does not equal high definition.

There is no requirement for high definition broadcasts and you do not need a high definition television to be digital, but if you want high definition it is part of the digital standard. When you switch to a digital tuner, as you change channels you will find that TV stations are broadcasting a standard definition picture and others a high definition picture, but both will display seamlessly over any digital tuner.

  13. smartasskitteh says:

smartasskitteh sayz: Whom ever made this LoLcat must realize that all one must do to ‘steal’ a signal after Februray 19th is puchase a converter box. At that point, the rabbite ears will once again be effective towards one goals of ‘stealing’ airwaves as one has so unelequently put it.

  14. Miroku says:

It’s probably some sort of conspiracy to use the unused signals to send spy info.

  15. parrothead says:

    **fliez in, luks arown**

  17. Lolmara says:

If ur in canada ur rabbitearz will stil work.

  18. jordan says:

you merely have to buy a converter box, and with the coupon from the government its pretty much free

    • Elebentee munnies fur yewsin da troll rode. And ai wall rekomend dat yew make a stop at da sy key atric clinic down da rode. It just cost yew elebenty twentee munnies and maybeh yew can figure owt whii yew wants tew beh the unhappee and criticlol, and prevents udders frum habin dere funs.

    • lunarmommy says:

‘ksept taht teh govermint haz runnded owt ob munniez for teh kyoopons.

  19. pointman says:

This may be the most truthful, accurate and real-life item I have seen on the internet in weeks. Digital transition is nothing but a two-bit scam. I just got a notice in the mail that the so-called ‘free broadcast’ channels will now be charging for their crappy local-yokel signal. The thought of having to pay for that crud makes me seriously consider turning off the TV altogether.

    • schmo says:

You may want to check your facts, such as the reason behind the change (emergency broadcasting over congested air waves) and the fact that the stations you watch now are likely adding channels, not charging for the ones you receive now.

    • emoreth says:

      Who gibs u teh infurrmashun?
TV iz still free if yu haz teh box. Teh box iz less spensiv then tu munthz ov cable an gibs u teh better pickshurez dan u cud get befoar. Srsly, wut about dat iz a scam?

  20. christine says:

i just put the converter on my small TV and OMG the picture is so clear and you get a bunch of sub channels not available on the plain old rabit ears. multi channels of ABC, NBC, PBS etc and it is crisp and clear without any cable.

I was about to run the cable to the 2nd bedroom but the image is so clear we are going to leave it.

  21. Daniel says:

There is a lot of inaccurate information here. Digital TV remains free and over-the-air, as others have said. In fact, here in the middle of nowhere (north central Iowa) digital ota tv has expanded the channels we receive from the local NBC, ABC, CBS, Fox, PBS affiliates to include a MyNetwork TV (on the second channel of the CBS affiliate), CW (on the NBC), and RTN (on a different NBC). And, of course, PBS has three different feeds, and most affiliates run SD weather feeds or other local information.

You may need to upgrade your antenna equipment, but unlike cable, that’s a one time fee. The direction of the signal is particularly important with ATSC, so you might need to have a rotating antenna to fine tune. A lot of older antennas are pretty much rusted to the roof, so the whole thing might need to be replaced.

Thank you Daniel(not really) for killing the buzz with your factual informative comment
