In all the time I have spent here, I’ve never commented before. But this is only an advertisement for a poorly reviewed dog comedy, and not even remotely funny. The ICHC mods should remove this. This drags the site down and does not even fit the whole spirit of ICHC. Shame on the studio hacks who put this here.

We’ve been running this ad, y’know, over at that place where I work, in a similar way. And of COURSE there’s been all the BAWWWWWW SELLOUTS WAAAAH complaints, and the YOU’VE RUINED MY C.O. YOU BASTARTS I’M GOING OVER TO ICHC UNTIL THIS AD GOES AWAAAAAY HAH SO THERE. To which I replied, Sure, not a problem, until somebody goes & buys inline adspace over there too (that is, here) — THEN watch what happens.
It is quite possible that some of the trolling you see here is spillover, and for that, you have my sympathies. (REMINDER TO CERTAIN BRATS WITH AN OVERINFLATED SENSE OF ENTITLEMENT: Some of us work for a living.)

Run your ads, that’s fine, I sell ad space on my website as well. Just don’t pretend it’s content. I actually assume the makers of that movie or whatever it was snuck it in here, not that it was misleadingly placed by the administrators.
I’ve come to accept paying for my content by looking at ads on sites, no need to censor my comments. At least on CO it clearly says “advertisement” over the post. If you thought my “diaf” was anything but snarky internet banter then I apologize, I wish neither you nor the makers if this film anything but the best.

I agree with you to some extent, re: advertising that looks like regular content. You’re right, that’s why we added our own “ADVERTISEMENT” disclaimer (after some folks requested it). But I’d call this hybrid advertising. It’s a highly-targeted premium ad, formatted to fit into the local context. So somebody put forth a little effort here… though not with great success, I’ll concede. It’s the sort of thing you see on a poster in your dentist’s office, next to the little “Hang In There” kitten.
ANYhow. Not my house either. But I deal with this regularly, elsewhere.
It is “censorship”, Theo, but I don’t dispute that you’re right; it is “their house” and they are entitled to do as they please. I feel no rights of mine have been violated. I’m trying to be sympathetic to the parties involved, and certainly to C.O., which is a blog I admire, but I do take exception to the sentiment that I “act like an ass”.
Look, I express my disdain to my Vet for the very same reason you bring up; she posts advertisements in the office that appear as entertainment, or factoids or whatever, but they’re there to get me to buy pet insurance that I don’t need or food that’s not necessarily any better for the animal even if it is “organic” and whatever. That same disdain I feel towards newspapers or any other medium, including animal blogs, that don’t disclose their interest in a particular article or post. Blogs are trusted sources these days and they should feel obliged to maintain certain editorial standards. Something less obnoxious may have slid under the radar, but this post on this site is unfunny and obviously just there to drive traffic to a third party site.
Anyway, peace and love to you and the folks at C.O. Sorry if I rubbed anybody the wrong way, I just wish it to be known that I don’t appreciate any blog treating me as a reader in this manner.

But I agree with Phil below, that content and content only should go where the posts go. What if two or three (or all) of the advertisers decide they want their ads in the content space? They pay for it, they’re entitled to it, right? But then, where are you going to put the stuff your visitors (who are presumably being targeted by the ads) want to see?

I think it’s fine for dogs to be on the site, but I disagree with using captions on a poster to make a poorly disguised advertisement.
I’ve also never commented here before, and feel inclined to after seeing this. It’s not the fact that it’s an ad that bothers me. It’s the fact that this “lol” was made COMPLETELY not in the spirit of ICHC and the lolcat meme.
See, the “inspirational motif” is meant to be used ironically. Here, it is used completely unironically, without a hint of cleverness. The inspirational message appears to actually be meant to be inspirational, and this is unacceptable.
Granted, this particular example happens to be an ad for a movie, but I would not be at all shocked to see this identical image show up on the front page here these days.
Go back and look at the archives – the first 30 or 40 pages or so. You won’t find a single image that is devoid of irony or cleverness. There’s a certain sense of humour that ICHC and the lolcat meme were founded on, it has been completely lost over the last few months, and I have a theory why.

Moms have no sense of irony. Their once razor-sharp wits have been dulled into submission by biology. They lose their ability to see beyond face-value. Sarcasm and subtlety are completely lost on moms. All they are concerned about is base-level cuteness.

Now, you seem to be entirely missing the point. we know that all cats hate being dressed up and all that too. We just like it because it’s funny, It hasn’t been overused at all. Now by your logic, this must mean that there are a lot of dim-witted moms out there, which I frankly find preposterous. The movie was cute enough for the Nickelodeon set, but I wouldn’t rec it to my nieces or nephews. Not worth the theater or the fuss–which is probably why it was released in January, advertised constantly on Nick, and had a McDonald’s Happy Meal promotion.

This is the first pic on the main page that had me wishing for a “zero cheezburgers” voting icon.
There are two glaring problems with this “submission”: First, it’s not funny, especially in the way ICHC readers expect. The photo is passably cute if overly staged, but the caption (oops, capshun) is Ziggy-like in its saccharin lifelessness and the synergy between the two is non-existent. Bereft of typical ICHC appeal, it sticks out like the proverbial sore thumb/paw compared to the other pics. Which leads to the second problem; It can’t possibly have made it to the main page without being a paid-for advertisement. It even credits Paramount as well as the movie and links to the movie’s website. The very disappointing ICHC book also seemed driven more by greed than content, but at least it was/is separate from the site. By putting this bald-faced ad on the main page, you’ve spat in the eye of every contributor to whom you owe a debt of gratitude.
Shame on you, ICHC. A Disheartening Sellout.

I agree wiv u, and if this happned all teh time, i’d get miffed. (And I think if dis was promoting a Cat movie, it’d be more appropriate — heh!) All that aside, however, I’m a bit concerned with the invasive techniques being used by some of teh advertisers. A number of visitors to this site had our puters attacked by adware viruses during the past week. It worries me what some of these advertisers are embedding into their ads, and angers me that anyone wuld attempt to use this site as a medium to infect personal computers.
So…I was sort of tongue in cheek venting when I posted above. Coz yeah, I come here to LOL and splort. hee,

How about: normal weighting of votes up to about 500 or so. But after that, negative votes start counting more. The more total votes, the more negative votes get weighted.
If done right this could restore some sort of spread of scores, not 4.8 to 5.0 as we currently have.
