Off-topic. This liddel list is for Leeza-B (aka skwirrlgrrl). Sum commints on Florida camping and backpacking. Too long for lol-speek, so lol-speek orf for nao. I’ll paste in pieces since it’s a little long.
Water – Plan to carry enough water to drink; do not count on finding potable water on the trail. There should be potable water in designated campgrounds, but it may taste funny to you.
Bugs – Plan for insects. Make sure you have a tent with no holes in the mosquito netting. Take bug spray. Carry a walking stick (can be good for clearing spider webs). Especially beware of camping near any little red fire ants, which can give miserable itchy bites. And watch out for spiders, many of which may be poisonous (don’t just walk through that web – whack it with your stick instead, see prior comment).
Gear – With a backpack, fit and weight are everything. A friend can help you adjust the pack to fit better. It should fit snugly at hips and shoulders. Less weight is better. And it’s best to try out a new pack in advance of a big trip. Never wear brand new boots on a big trip; and lightweight shoes are better on a long trip (hiker’s rule: a pound on your foot is equal to carrying 5 pounds on your back).
Camera – There is wonderful stuff to see in Florida, including wildlife and scenery. Carry a camera and extra film (and batteries) with you. When taking morning shots, allow time for the camera to adjust. For example, be prepared that the camera may steam up if moving from a cool or dry condition (such as inside a car) to a warm or damp condition (such as photos by a spring or humid areas).

Florida kitsch – There are some neat and unique attractions, such as the Weeki Wachee Mermaid show, which bills itself as “America’s last live mermaid attraction.” Haven’t seen this one yet but always wanted to! http://www.roadsideamerica.com/story/2068 or http://www.floridathemeparks.com/resources/Weeki-Wachee-Springs.html (Weeki Wachee Springs just became Florida’s most recent State Park in FA 08.) Wakulla Springs (western part of state) is one of the world’s largest and deepest freshwater springs; it is also the place where the movie Creature from the Black Lagoon was filmed. When I was there, maybe 10 years ago, the nearby lodge had a big glass case in which a huge (stuffed but once live) alligator was on display. Some parks may require 2-night minimum stay on weekends. You are likely to find amphibians in the showers or campsite; I opened the cover on the electric connector thingy at one campsite one morning to find 15 to 20 little frogs in there!

FWIW, my favorite beach in the whole world – St. Joseph’s Peninsula, on the Panhandle. You can walk along the beach and pick up tiny sandollars of all sizes, some no bigger than a dime! http://www.floridastateparks.org/STJOSEPH/ But watch out for windy weather – when the wind blows out of the gulf, you’ll want to camp in the more sheltered parts of the campground, with trees to buffer the wind (wind bent a tent pole there once, and ended up taking down tent and sleeping in car). Park has 8 gorgeous, furnished cabins on bay side with names like Dolphin – haven’t stayed there yet, but it’s one of my goals!
Repasting:
Swimming in the springs – The temp in the springs is the same year-round. It’s wonderful fun to snorkel in the springs (you’ll need a mask and swim fins), but if you swim in fresh water, keep an eye out for snakes (including cottonmouths which are poisonous) and alligators. The air temp in winter months may seem cool to you, though, so if swimming, take along something warm to wrap yourself in when done swimming. In some springs, such as Blue Spring State Park, you may be able to swim with manatees at certain times of year. http://www.floridastateparks.org/bluespring/ A side trip to Alexander Springs (old Florida at its most charming) would be well worth your time, as you can swim there and there is a lovely hiking trail around the springs and you can rent glass-bottom boats. Springs may be crowded on warm weekends – a weekday visit may be less populated. In certain springs, you can scuba dive – but some more challenging locations (such as Peacock Springs) may limit scuba diving to certified cave diving experts. Ohai, eubie. Assateague is a beautiful and verreh speshul playce. But teh bugs and teh wind can be feerce – ther is nowhere to hide! We prefers to go ther in teh spring and fall, when it is nawt so warm and ther is less krowds. Teh full moon of Oktober is a fayvrit tyme at teh beech for us.
I have watched the moon rise red over the ocean, and seen the ponies running along the sand. When I spend a few days there, it makes me quiet and peaceful inside. Teh last tyme we wuz ther was fall of 2004, a few munths after Gremlin died. We said it was the “memorial ride” in his honor, as we had taken Gremlin there in a conversion van teh fall befoar.
