Oldest Ever Lolcat Found *gasp* (Iz From Teh 1905)
What’s Delaying My Dinner?
This captioned cat picture postcard was found by Tracy Angulo in a Seattle antique store. Tracy tells us that the photograph is from 1905, which would make this officially the oldest cat picture with a caption, AKA lolcat, that we’ve seen.
The differences are clear. Proper grammar and a more formal tone was in vogue back then. But the similarities to modern-day kitten struggles and lolcats are amazing. ALL CAPS is still cool, but most importantly, she also no can has cheezburger. More than a hundred years later, all that’s changed is the spelling.

my sympathies……it is so hard losing good fur person friends…I think of it like elves and humans in the Lord of the Rings; we live so much longer than thenm it is hard to see generations of them pass us by.

I know the feeling. I lost my beloved Thomas last April and his pal Winchester a few months later. I knew once one went, the other was not far behind. They were 18 and 17. They both gave me many years of wonderful loving and I’ll always be glad they were in my life at all. An’ ah’m purty shur dey b mekkin’ truble fer da angels in heaven. God love ‘em all cuz I shur do!

Sorry to hear of your pending loss. We had a 19 yo kitteh who ran away from next door and wanted to live with us. She was 12 when she did that. Very sad when it came time for her to go to the Rainbow Bridge, although she paved the way for my DH to learn that he loves kittehs! (I already knew this about myself.)
She also paved the way for us to realise we need kittehs in our life, and we now have three who live with us.

What a killjoy! And as a collector of antique ephemera, I can tell you that humorous postcards featuring anthropomorphisized animals are really common in that time period. eBay probably has a ton of them – I have several myself.

What I want to know is how they got the cat to sit still for the 30 seconds it took the camera to expose the film. As I recall, the film chemistry back then didn’t exactly allow for 1/500th second shutter speeds.

One word: Taxidermy.
Yup. This sort of picture from this period is relatively common and the animals are invariably dead and stuffed – sorry to be a downer.
Yes, and of course every young child from back then that was photographed was really dead and stuffed, too.
People used to rent these horrors out to be photoed in place of their own children for family portraits.
Obviously, that’s the only way a child that age ever would have sat still long enough to get the exposure.

(There, there. Calm down. Obviously that didn’t happen. Sometimes I scare myself….)
I suppose some people also had kittehs that had a gift for sitting still for pictures-that would be gold for a photographer. And I suppose some people stuffed beloved deceased pets for preservation in an especially charming pose. So even if Kitteh was an ex-kitteh, it’s not necessarily a sad story or the work of some sicko.
What makes me think it might be a live cat is that a stuffed cat would have stayed in that pose forever., obviously It would of had limited use for the effort involved in making the thing. And if kitteh was stuffed, whoever did it, did a good job.
Know what it looks like to me? It looks as if the body and the hands of the creature are fake and the cat is actually standing behind the chair, rather than sitting in it. Yeah, she’d have to sit still for a while with all the photo mess. But they managed to photograph live children under those conditions (obviously), so, yes, it is possible.
The annoying thing is, Live or Taxidermy, we’ll never know.
In any case, I hope kitteh was loved and cherished as all kittehs deserve to be.

However, I believe if you do some digging it may be possible to find LOLCATS from ancient Egypt. The problem will be in translating the hieroglyphics.
Are you kidding, Lolcats are the key to decoding the hieroglyphics! Once they come across a picture of a cat waiting for a meal, they will know that the first words in the the hieroglyphs must be “i can has…”
It might say something along the lines of:

Dis pikchur iz achually from a kitteh book Three Little Kittehs. Mah grandmama waz born in 1900 and she hadz dis bookie. Ah still haz it. All lolcats.
Due to the expense of photographs prior to the 40’s, it is extremely rare to find one of a pet alone, and when one is found, it is usually not a studio portrait such as this. This picture would be worth a good bit of money to a specialized collector.

I believe the correct spelling and the dress are there because photography back then was still quite a posh thing. Not every kitteh could have hundreds of snapshots taken everyday like modern digital-camera lolcats do. Only a well behaving kitteh, who could dress like a hoomin, sit still like a hoomin and spell like a hoomin had a chance to get into studio.

THIS BOOK was a picture book from the turn of the century called “KITTY’S DAY OUT” or something. Gold crazed neighbors (now declared insane) believed for every last existing book you burned, you’d find a gold nugget on the beach. I tried but got a broken arm and only saved one leaf out of it. There was a photo with caption on OPPOSITE page of this book (so photos with the caption ON THE BACK). 1993 lolcat newsgroup/feed.
