My dad served in Desert Storm and brought home the cat that adopted his company. It’s a good thing, too – Saudi turned out to have feline diabetes and would have died if left behind.

I signed on specifically to make this comment, then I’ll be gone again.
First, sorry to only be speaking ‘English’ – I can’t ‘do’ kitten. (Must be a character flaw in me of something…)
Second, “Long, long ago in (what might as well have been) a galaxy far, far away” I, also, was a young soldier full of more ideals and hormones than is “safe” for young humans. Without going into the details (which really don’t apply, anyway), I served and came home on my own two feet, while many I knew .. didn’t. This particular picture was both a red-hot knife in the gut that =HURT= like hell, and a pull at my heart like I haven’t felt in years, maybe even decades. (Yes, some of us here are, indeed, “geezers.”) Because of some of the ‘medication’ VA has me on, I -literally- =can= not cry .. but I’m feeling the (ghostly) tears run down my cheeks on this on…….
According to the newspaper site, this story is two years old. To the extent that I believe any longer in a Supreme Being of Any Sort, I =pray= that =BOTH= this soldier =AND= ‘Squeak’ came home alive and well. But if ‘Squeak’ was left behind .. .. well, I’m not allowed to use that kind of language in public – sorry.
Does anyone know how to find out if ‘Squeak’ came “home” and how (he?she?) is doing? I’d almost be willing to give up another part of me [don't ask] to find out.
Whatevery happened to this brave young soldier and his little pumpkin cat? Will anyone ever find out for us? Did the Canadian Govt. let him come home with his lil’ Kitteh?

I “owned” a little black kitten named Snowball for most of my tour in Iraq. I traded a whole box of Chef Boyardee ravioli for her… best trade I ever made. About three weeks before I left for home I gave her to a wounded kid in a hospital outside Fallujah… and I still miss her.
…and now hooman will go and kill other humans in foreign land.

Both came home safely. The Marine took shrapnel in the head and neck, so he wound up with the cat (unhurt, of course) in Walter Reed Army Hospital, where he was discharged, no worse for wear, with a Purple Heart. Last I heard they’re still togeather and doing fine.

Just going back to this for the first time, in awhile….thank you so much for letting me know this story. I know in the overall scheme of what’s happing, it is a small story, but it’s a very big one in many ways. My daughter & I printed the picture & it’s on my desk @ work, & we’ve come back to this picture a few times. She is 11, but knows the value of doing the right thing, and respect for life–& also that it’s not always easy to balance. We have been interested in the program for fostering pets of those called to service, and helped with Run For the Fallen, when they passed through Virginia. You should goggle that run; most incredible. We did not personally know any of the soldiers killed in Iraq & Afghanistan, but we do now–& gotten to know many of their families, made many friends. Maybe we can trade an email address. In the meantime, check out One Marine’s View blog, I love that guy!

In desperation all day yesterday, I searched for a followup story about this soldier and this kitten. Presumably the soldier made it home safely, but the fact that there was no followup tells me there was no happy ending, and we can only hope this little angel cat is now, one way or another, in a much gentler world. There are hundreds more like this little critter, but still…. If you want to make a difference for others like him, go to http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/change-military-policy-about-animals, and sign, so that in future soldiers may be able to choose to take home their feline/canine buddies.

Both came home safely. The Marine took shrapnel in the head and neck, so he wound up with the cat (unhurt, of course) in Walter Reed Army Hospital, where he was discharged, no worse for wear, with a Purple Heart. Last I heard they’re still togeather and doing fine.
