I spent one christmas in Upstate NY, Watertown when a buddy of mine was based at Ft. Drum. My first experience with powder snow. That and snow drifts piled by snow plows higher that I stand. Also, the first time I’ve ever seen snomobiles used on the street.

Serious question: Does anyone out there have (or had) a cat diagnosed with renal failure? My 14 y.o. boy has been diagnosed, and the vet said that he could live a couple more years with regular saline injections and a special diet, but I have been doing that for a month and he is getting weaker and skinnier all the time. The vet said he isn’t in pain, but I don’t think it can be good when I have to pablumify his food and shoot it in his mouth with a syringe to get him to eat enough to stay alive, and keep him hydrated via injections. How do you know when he might get better/stronger and when it might be kinder to have the long nap?
Harry- I have a friend who’s sister has a cat who suffers from renal failure. Her cat gets regular saline injections also, But she doesn’t have to feed him via syringe. He eats a special diet and she has a special part of the house to keep him in due to “accidents”, But nothing else. I, personally would seek a second opinion from an “uninformed” vet, and see what he has to say about the entire condition of your boy. Also the cat I spoke of isn’t suffering pain. But, I would get another opinion before another day goes by. Hope you find success for you and your boy.
Thanks for the comments, Calicorose54. I know about the accidents! For some reason, he has picked my bed to be his accident zone, even though I have a litter box between his bed and my bed. I now keep my bed covered with a shower curtain. At least I still have my old water bed, so all I have to worry about is washing bedding, and not a mattress too! I started with the syringing food to try to build him up, since on his own he was eating so little. It might be working a bit, since he is now much more actively struggling to avoid the syringe. When I started, he just laid there and took it meekly. So I don’t know if that is progress or not. I had had his blood tested a year ago, and there was no sign of kidney problems then, so it seems as though it came on very quickly. I have a suspicion that it was related to having his teeth cleaned and some pulled in June. Apparently that can cause a flood of bacteria from the plaque to be released that can damage the kidneys. He had the course of antibiotics prescribed by the vet prior to the cleaning/extractions, but maybe it was still too much for his old kidneys. Whatever started the problem, we have to deal with it now, but it is so heartbreaking to see him so thin and weak, but with still such a big purr in spite of all the indignities. If there is any chance at all that I can build him up again, I don’t want to give up too soon. But on the other hand, I don’t want to be selfishly prolonging his life if it would be better for him not to….
Harry, I can’t give you any advice, but I wanted to tell you you have come to the right place for good advice. As Calicorose said, get a second or maybe even third opinion, watch your boy and if you feel he is suffering, do the last kindness a human can do to an animal friend. Do come here and share with us, you will find plenty of support and comfort here. All the best for you and your furry boy!
