I grew up in South Bombay where many of these attacks took place.
I haven’t lived there for a long while so I am surprised at the visceral
reaction I am having. I am worried and upset.
It’s totally understandable — they’re going for a reaction on a visceral level & they’re getting it. Your memories run deep, so it only makes sense that anyone attacking areas that have a place in your memory will make you worried, upset, and generally discombobulated. I wish I could say something to make you feel better.

Two-kittehs, ai dint know you were from Bombay. I’ve only been there once – but I also had friends living there. And I’m really so sorry about the Taj! I just said to Moe that it is SUCH a beautiful building – it’s awful to kill poeple – but also awful to destroy landmarks. Wicked!

The Taj Mahal Hotel is a very special landmark. Apart from being a very beautiful building, it’s also a symbol of resistance. The posh hotel in the days of British colonial rule was whites-only. One of India’s wealthiest businessmen got disgusted about this, and built the Taj, which was at least as grand as any British hotel, just to show them. And the Taj would welcome Indian guests as well as white ones. It’s ironical that these terrorists are targeting it now because that’s where many Europeans and Americans are. Obviously, a lot of the people in that building are Indian (all the staff, and a very large number of guests. I even go there on occasion, to the bookshop or a restaurant).

I have been in shock since I heard this news.
o hai ebberywun. Thanks for your concern. I’m safe but scared. Janet — Mumbai is a big city, but these terrorists, they do their homework well. There was a 45-minute gun battle and grenades right outside my office. It was ~10:30 pm (we work evenings and nights), and we could see the gunmen running and firing, and people running in the station. I saw someone running while carrying another person on their shoulders. A few foreigners are being held hostage in two five-star hotels. Yes, they’re targeting luxury hotels, but this being wedding season, there are many banquets going on any given night. It’s past 3 am here now, and the hostage situations are far from over. My colleagues and I are staying put at work (there’s no choice), where we’re safe in this old solid stone building. I don’t know whether the city outside will be any safer after daybreak — we’ll see when we can go home.
