I have to chime in here…
Someone asked for ONE species of bird wiped out by cats. Here’s ONE:
On Stephen’s Island, New Zealand, the lightkeeper’s cat kept bringing him “presents” of small wrens. By the time it was known that this wren species was endemic (known only on THAT island), the cat had killed EVERY SINGLE ONE.
I am an educator for a bird of prey rehab center, and I strive to help people understand what they are really doing when they let their cats be outside. Looking at it first from an environmental angle:
Cats kill birds. Cats kill rodents. Cats are removing important food sources for owls, hawks, etc.
A domestic cat who is allowed outside and kills rodents and birds are not to blame. The OWNERS who let their cats outside are to blame.
It’s not “natural” for a domestic cat to kill while outside. Cats are introduced predators and are causing HAVOC on native birds species. ONE nick from a cat’s claw on a songbird will kill it. Cat’s claws and mouths are full of harmful bacteria that will slowly destroy tissue. Any human who had to undergo surgery and weeks of antibiotics due to a cat bite can attest to that.
Owning a pet means that you promise to feed, protect and care for an animal. Letting ANY animal run free, thinking that you are doing something positive and healthy for it, is sadly misguided.

All you “outdoor” cat owners, think on this:
Think about your cat. (Even better, look into his eyes.)
Now think about your cat ground to a pulp by a car’s tires.
Or think of your cat being ripped to shreds by a dog or coyote.
Or think of your cat getting attacked or hit by a car, then dragging itself into a ditch, too injured to come home. And then think of your cat dying slowly over the course of two days, in that ditch, due to starvation or internal bleeding.
This picture is not about nature taking its course. To think that is so very sad. It saddens me that this site, which I love dearly, would post such a picture and the comments (of which there are over 200) barely address the true nature of the picture….very very sad.
NO OUTDOOR CATS.
NO “Barn” CATS.
If you love your cat, keep it inside.

Exactly. As the owner of several cats, we’ve had our share of small dead things show up in the middle of the night. Even my dog has killed a rat (and my son’s turtle, but that’s another story).

However, seeing a picture of a dead chipmunk does not exactly fill me with lolz.

And you would know that this cat in the picture *isn’t* a barn or farm cat how???
I worked at a farm market for years, and we had barn cats there who would leave us presents at the front door all the time. The owners house was also on the lot and they would leave presents at their door too. We fed the cats kibble as well as letting them hunt for their own food in the barns since we didn’t want them to go hungry, so occasionally they would feel the need to “thank” us with things like this.

Besides the fact that saying that “entire species of birds and rodents are being wiped out” by cats that are let out is absolutely ridiculous and absurd, I’d like to hear the name on even just ONE species of rodent or bird that has been proven to become extinct from pet cats. You have NO idea who took this picture, where they live, if that cat is even an indoor cat at all, or anything about it at all for that matter.

I understand its what kittehs do… I got no problem with the cat. But it doesn’t mean I want to see it. Doesn’t mean I find it cute or funneh. In fact, its distinctly not cute. Most definitely not funny. In fact, it makes me sad to see.

And it doesn’t mean I understand why this site has warnings for pictures of reptiles, but no warning for something like that, which I find FAR more upsetting.

Um… I don’t feel like running this all through a lolcat translation and making it all cute n goofy.

You probably aren’t going to see this, but I can’t let this go unsaid:

Cats being cats is fine, as long as it is in their owners’ homes. Pet cats have NO BUSINESS being outside. Entire species of rodents and birds are being wiped out by irresponsible cat owners letting their pets out, or just not keeping track of where they are. Free-roaming house cats are PESTS that are destroying ecosystems. (Please contrast house cats with farm cats — the latter serve a purpose.)

Please understand, I have nothing against natural predatory behavior, and I don’t have a problem with cats (my pet cat is currently sleeping in the next room, thankyouverymuch). The problem is that cats introduced by people upset the balance of nature by taking food needed by other predators.

I’m going to continue to be upset/pissed off by images like this, and I will not just pass it off as a cat being a cat. That cat had no business even being in a position that would make it possible kill that chipmunk, and so its predatory nature should never have even entered the equation.

Bottom line: The ONLY time a pet should be in an unenclosed area is when it is on a leash. People who fail to follow this rule don’t deserve to have any pets.
