It’s funny you should mention that…
The theatre I do shows at in the summer is an outdoor amphitheatre at a local botanical gardens. They use “working cats” to control the mouse and vole population. The cats have houses scattered throughout the gardens, and get regular medical attention, etc.
One of the cats is located in the theatre area. Dexter (who passed over the bridge about 4 years ago) loved to capture and torture bugs, especially cicadas. He would sometimes bring one onstage DURING PERFORMANCES (well… it was HIS theatre, after all) and eat them. Occasionally he would chase one onstage. And sometimes he would walk on during a performance to make sure we were all performaning our best. He was a great cat, a very handsome tuxie.
Dexter sownds lyke a wunderful cat! Aym prowd to hav named mah own tabbeh-kat after heem! Mah own Dexter lykes to chayse teh bugs, but he is most feerce with hiz floofy myce. Teh mitey hunter – if a REEL maus wuz to walk in teh haus, well . . . hoo noes whut mite happin!

I wuz tawking to heem and calling heem mah sweet behbeh and whut a wunnerful kitteh and teh best kitteh. An holdin heem to mah hart. He wuz a beeg feerce boi and tuk it very seriously that it wuz hiz job to defend and protekt me. (I gotted heem when I wuz just a yeer owt uv collej – so we sorta growed up together.) In teh end, I told heem it wuz OK to leev me, that I’d meet heem laytur at teh brij. I still cries over heem, I duz. I luvved heem so an I still do. He is teh orinj kitteh in mah avatar.

When it was time to let my most beloved kitteh go the vet gave me time alone with him to say good-bye. He lay on a heated pad, and I had my arms around him. I thanked him for everything he gave me, told him I loved him, and told him that he would be going to sleep soon, but when he woke up, there would be someone waiting for him to take care of him. He purred and acted as if he completely understood everything I said, and was glad to let his body go. The vet came in and gave him the injections while I had my arms around him. Then he was gone, and the vet let me stay alone with the empty body for a while and weep.
