I agree. Ask the vet if you can’t bring her in in a carrier. If she is that friendly, and lets your son pick her up, you should be able to. If they say no, contact another vet. My vet let me bring my stray momma cat in, and it was NO problem. They should be experienced in handling this kind of situation, and if they aren’t, then they’re not the right vet for you and this particular cat.
(coming from someone who has just been through this exact same thing)

Aifinkso, ai wud check wif her…I not noes da costs of dem, **sighs** we hab 4 kittehs in da haus, two dem feral kittehs, we hadz to buy new kitteh carrier for da outsid kitteh ai telz yu bout earlier. Yu can buyz un wif top dat openz up (easier to put kitteh inside, and easier for vets to examines kitteh)as well az the front door. Iz gud to hab it around ennywayz, in case uf fires, or if udder kittehs haz to go to vets sumtimz in footure. Mai kitteh Mommy wuz stray, she not let us petz for long time, den was bedder, den notises her had tummeh full ub bebees. Wuz so long sins dat happens to me, dat I finking dat der wuz lotz nd lotz ub time to get her to vet for da shots. Den soon after mai huzbin calls me at mai wurk, Mommy kittehs follows him into haus and startz to hab her bebehs. Her not had shotz, so we keeps her and bebehs in da bedrum til can get her to vets. We had won kitteh alredee, wuz not planz to keep Mommy inside, den wen ai gitz home, her layz her little hed in mai hand wen da bebehs iz coming. Well, dat did it, she goes to vet, gitz da shotz, den iz kitteh #2, den cud nawt fin gud hom for one da bebehs, so he also haz gud hom wit us. I finks to check wit da vet agin, I finks she jist want kitteh in carrier, and nawt to meen big cage trap to bring her in. Ai iz hapee to here dat you not lib wer iz so cold for da outsidez, hab yu gib her a name yet?

He gotz so sik wif mange dat he goz way to down da block to die. Mai huzzbin luks and luks for him, den finz him. He wuz gon for almos a munth. Weh huzbin fins him, he so sik hiz eyes swollen and cud nawt see. Mai vet sed to catches kitteh and to put kitteh in pillowcase. Ai fot dis souns mean, but vet sez kittehs can breeths in der, and dey nawt be so afraid in pillowcase, it meks dem to feel safe. Dis long storee, so ai stops and tells yu dis. Wen kitteh at vet, he getz so scard dat he runz (member he blind den) an runs strate up da wood wall at da vets! I nebber seen anyfing lik it. Dey catches him wif big fishing type of net, den putz him in cat carrier. Mebbe can get big net, get big kitteh carrier and catches kitteh lik dat if not can fine trap. Den not hab to get so clos to kitteh. Pleez letz meh no how dis storee enz.
