Just to pop in…
It’d be odd to domesticate a hummingbird. When you’re studying them in the wild, you basically put a trap around a feeder, hide behind a bush, and close it when they go in. Then you grab them and take measurements and band them then you hold them like this (it’s called a photographer’s grip, you can see why) and then you release them! I’ve helped with a hummingbird banding project before. But you have to get a special bander’s license to do hummingbirds because they’re so different than other passerines. Sorry that was completely bird-geeky.

These pictures are no daowt taken during mist-netting studies. Ornitholologists puts up very fine nets (like mist, getz it?) and waitfer teh birds to fly in. Then (carefully) removes them, makes the mezurements, sumtimes putz the little band on their legs, then away they go. Yew can notices in the picshur here how the hand is holding the little feets (delicately but firmly) … while the bird gets a bead on teh target …

Yep, hummers is feisty. One time ai found wun in the middle ob teh city, sitting on teh sidewalk. No flowers around; he ranned out of energy. Ai picked him up and took to a colleague hoo studeed the hummers. We mixed up some sugar water, gave him a drink, openeded teh window and held him outside. He looked at me, said “bzzzztttt!!!”, and flew off. I donut think that “bzzzzzztttttt” meant thnxbai.

Ai letted him warm & dry himz fevvurz in teh sun & ai giveded him shugar waddur to drink frum mah hand (akshulee week iced tea wif lawts uf shugar innit). Himz wuz sew kyoot! Wif enerjee replenisht & fevvurz warm and dry, himz went flitting awai.

I livs in Noo Orlens, and wen we had to evvac…eevaku…evacku…leave teh city fur Hurrycane Gustav last munth, I went to sta wif sum frends in St.Francisville, not so far frum where theese pics were taken. My frends had manny hummmybird feeders along teh edge of their bak porch. We sat on teh perch, I meen porch, during all teh wind an rain, drinking wine an watchin the hummybirds, who never stopped feedin and zipping around during teh highest winds! I wooduv thot that those winds wood knok them to teh ground, but they diddnt seem to be bothered at all! I’ll nevver furget that.
