I have a kitten question if anyone out there has any advice:
I have 6 week old kittens… I’ve had them inside with their mother. Well I kicked her out today. My rescue contact said once they were eating solid food I’d have to do that, that they wouldn’t bond with a hoomin until the bond w/mother was broken. Plus, her milk needs to dry up so I can get her fixed.
1. Six weeks is old enough right? They’ve been eating kitten chow. I guess I’m worrying b/c I haven’t seen them eating much… they’ve eaten SOME but as long as they’re eating, it’s ok right? Just not sure how much a 6 wk old kitten eats and worried they’re not eating enough.
2. I feel bad about the mother. She’s outside, and her.. um… let’s call them milk glands- are pretty darn full! Is that painful? I would think so but maybe this is normal.. she has to stop nursing sometime right?
Ok that’s 2 questions, soo me.
Anyone had any xperiense with this?
The kittens will bond with humans even if they are still with the mother, if the humans pet them and hold them. I have 7 kittens here, all have bonded with me and still have their mother with them, three of them are still nursing. The mother can get very very ill if you suddenly make her hold her milk, and if the kittens are not used to eating yet, they can get very ill. Please, bring mama back in, as long as you are holding and petting the kittens from the beginning, they will bond with you. Believe me, I have had hundreds of kittens and mamas in my lifetime.
Ohai leeza-b! Generally speaking, mama cats will wean their kittens gradually between 5-8 weeks. This prevents her teats from swelling up so bad. The swelling will eventually go down but you need to check them to see if they’re hot. If so, she could have an infection and that IS very painful. I recommend putting her back with the kittens and see if they still want to nurse. It will relieve some of the pressure and will lessen the shock of losing mama so abruptly.
When the kitten’s teeth start to interfere with nursing the mama cat will start to wean them on her own. That said, it won’t hurt the kittens to be off mother’s milk at six weeks. I like to start my kittens on wet food and then start with dry food. If they’re teething, dry food sometimes hurts their little mouths.
As for socialization, the relationship you have with the mama cat is what the kittens will mimic. If you’re not close to mama then it’s best to keep them separate so they can learn about hoomans first hand (paw?) If mama seems really uncomfortable it’s ok to express some milk manually for a few days. The big thing is to watch out for infection.
I’d give the kittens and mama a few days to complete the transition. There’s no rule about when and how but my experience has been to make changes gradually. It’s usually better for all involved. Hope that helps!

O and I forgot to say, the momma is a very sweet friendly kitteh, she trusts me wif her babbehs, (sew she’s smart too! lol ) but the kittens see her getting pets from me all teh time. So that’s all gud.
You don’t actually *have* to do that, I’ve bonded perfectly well with kittens that were still with their mother. It’s sometimes advisable, and frequently helpful, but I wouldn’t call it essential. I’d treat it on a case-by-case basis. There is no firm wrong or right.

Monitor the kittens’ weight. If the weight is stable or increasing, it’s fine. If it’s decreasing, you might need to add something to boost their energy intake, or might want to have the mother cat around a while longer. In general, though, if the kittens are eating and playing ok, they’re probably fine.

My observation, from kitten rescues, is that every mother cat is different. It’s not easy to predict how their biology will respond, but you are correct in saying that she needs to stop nursing eventually, so one time is as good as another, if there’s no obvious crisis with the kittens.

If there are cat colonies around, particularly if there aren’t many good sources of food nearby, then she might not be stopping production for a reason. Although it’s unusual for one mother cat to rescue lost/abandoned kittens from another mother cat, and it seems unlikely, it’s also not unknown either. It might be good to observe for a bit, just to be sure.
Leeza-b, yur doing fine, relax a little and enjoy kitteh-hood. mamma will wean them when they are ready and she will start wanting to go outside on her own. she’ll let you know when. Your TNR contact is right but since it seems the kittehs are not ready to eat solid food, keep mamma with them for now. Kittehs have their own schedules and sometimes they will let us know what’s on their schedule (let’s see for today: 1. eat -check! 2. litter box-check! 3. sleep – check! 4. eat again – check! 5. sleep again – oops almost missed that.. gotta find a sunbeam..bye)

Her, uh brestices are big but not hot, and interestingly.. she’s been inside for nearly an hour and no nursing has happened. She lay down at one point and I think she wud have let them.. but they didn’t seem interested! When I just left them the whole fambly was eeting kitten chow together. I was worried for nothing I guess.

I haz brought up menny batches ov farm kittehs (bak n teh long-ago times when nobuddy spayed or neutered barncats). They always made a gradual transition from mama’s milk to cow’s milk to solid food (I hepped teach them to lap mlk). Mama kitteh always trusted me & ovver hoomans, babeh kittehs socialized well wif hoomans and went to good homes. We made sure she saw when kitten went wif new hooman, so she would not worry or go looking for it, and she always seemed to understand. I thot kittehs shuld be wif Mama for 8 weeks. When Mama haz had enuff, she will bat them away wif her paws when babehs come to her. Let her and kittehs decide when enuff’s enuff.

Hey, it’s never for nothing to be caring and compassionate. If you dare think like that again, I’ll… I’ll… I’ll tell the kittens! My best guess from your description is that the kittens are actually feeling more comfortable eating the food with the mother cat to reassure them that it’s ok to eat, so letting the mother back in may have been a good thing. It might have been reassuring to the mother, too.

My thoughts as a feral cat rescue Mum: Separate the Mum and Kittens. If they have teeth they are plenty old enough to be on dry kibble and water. No guilt trip required – just kibble,water and visits from a human. Work with the kittens – they need to be kept tame.
As for the Mum – will you keep feeding her ?
I sure hope so !
AND – she should be fixed before winter. It will be way too cold for trapping REAL SOON !

Re: mama’s “breasts”: yes, that would be painful: her teats are engorged. Normally, I mean human mothers gradually wean the babies off breast milk—is better for the mother and the infant.

I second the “you kicked the mother out???”. And she probably is in pain, from the sound of it. Regarding the kittens not eating much, they should be really hungry. Perhaps they can’t chew the kitten chow? Moisten it with some milk (just a little) and see what happens.
I think the best thing you can do for the mother and the kittens is to ask a vet. Not a rescue contact, actually go to a vet and ask him/her how to take care of the mom and the babies.
Yes… I work with a TNR group and my contact said that’s what I had to do.
I suggest telling the kittens what your contact told you. If the kittens start organizing a lynch mob, your contact was incorrect. :p

(Seriously, the only thing kittens consider rule books good for is chewing on. Rules of thumb are extremely useful, don’t get me wrong, and they are worth remembering, but they’re not set in stone. For example, most books will tell you never to give a cat cow’s milk, whereas some cats can handle it and even enjoy it, whereas others can’t and/or don’t. The rule of thumb will, on average, be right, otherwise it wouldn’t be a rule of thumb. But the thing about averages is that almost nothing will ever hit it exactly.)

Try giving her a fingertip’s worth of sour cream or clotted cream some time. Probably not more than that for a kitten. I’m going to bet she’ll go nuts over it.

Handy tip for very young kittens: Stroking them from head to tail when they are eating will often help them in digesting food. Not sure about kittens once they’re weaned, but I’m fairly sure it remains true for many kittens (and cats).
